Summary: Works as expected (except for con's). By far, better than manually vacuuming. By far the best of the 2 I tried. Pro's: Runs every day on the entire first floor and about once per week on the second floor (hand-carried). Mapping of both floors works excellent and the no-go zones work well. With 2 golden retrievers, the container in the vacuum fills up every day and empties every day. Needed Maintenance: A single bag lasts about 2 weeks. Every 2 weeks the rollers get cleaned, sensors wiped, and filter changed (cleaning filter involves washing it and letting it dry for the next time) Con's: Occasionally, the bag when replaced does not appear to fit perfectly and then does not empty as expected (seems to lose suction). Moving it by hand seems to fix it. Occasionally, the dog hair has gotten stuck during emptying process and has to be cleared manually. I have a 2 foot long thin and flexible piece of plastic that works for this (or you can unscrew the back and clean it out). ... show more

To be honest, when we first ordered this product, I didn't have high expectations. That opinion was based solely on the first robot vacuum we purchased (EUFY) about 7 years ago. It was just the basic vacuum and performed pretty badly. The slightest obstacle would confuse it or cause it to get hung up. We basically stopped using it after the first few months. With this Roborock, it's a whole new ballgame!! It was easy to unpack and setup. Then, I performed the Quick Mapping to allow it to identify each room. I did need to use the "divide" feature to break up some large areas found during the mapping process. After that, I named the rooms, added some furniture and identified the floor types. It completed the vacuuming process for all the rooms flawlessly in the house without a single issue. This initial vacuuming phase is where it fine tunes each room layout from the Quick Mapping stage. The only thing I did during the first vacuuming phase was use my foot to keep it from going under a dresser or bed, which it remembers during subsequent vacuuming sessions. While watching, during the initial vacuuming, I was amazed at how well it navigating around areas. It would hug as close as possible to all edges, doing a fantastic job cleaning all the floors. I also liked how the vacuum would go into a more powerful mode when it transitioned from hard floor to carpet and then slow down once it was back on tile. The key feature we were looking for in this new vacuum is it traveling back and forth across the floor in straight pattern. This is much more efficient that the EUFY that just zig zagged all over the place, repeating across numerous paths. The Roborock will travel around the edge of a room and then go back and forth across the rest of the room. I realize I'm old and retired, but I have to admit, it was quite fun watching it do such a great job. IT ALSO WORKS WELL WITH ALEXA, SO THAT IS ANOTHER PLUS!! Needless to say, we are VERY please and give it the highest possible score!! The only feature left to test is mopping, so we'll update our review to include that. Love this vacuum! I was a little hesitant because it wasn’t brand new but it has worked perfectly and we love it. We have a large dog and it has no problem picking up dog hair, vacuuming over mats or getting in corners. The app is great for managing the process and the instructions are easy to follow. It also talks to you when it’s finished or if it has an issue. I would highly recommend this vacuum to anyone who wants to set it and forget it. I do recommend purchasing the floor cleaner for using the mopping feature. One capful for a gallon of water so it goes a long way. ... show more

    • Smart vacuum with a dumb mop

The S8 Max+ is a mostly brilliant robotic vacuum that can quickly learn your house and automatically adapt to changing conditions. Its vacuuming ability is amazing! It is very effective at cleaning hardwood floors and carpets, as well as picking up all of our very 'sheddy' golden retriever's hair. It empties itself efficiently after cleaning and always finds its way around our house, avoiding obstacles without ever getting stuck. However, there are two weaknesses. It is a master at binding hair around the ends of the brushes. The only reason I did not give it three stars and return it is because it is easy to clean the hair out, but it cannot go more than a couple of cleanings without needing the hair cleaned out of the ends of the brushes, which is disappointing. The main reason I can only give it four stars is that when you attach the mop, it becomes a roboDUNCE and starts getting stuck everywhere. For some reason, it keeps trying to back up, which causes the mop to bind up. Where it normally maneuvers around almost everything, with the mop attached it just does ridiculous things it would normally not do. For example, it kept trying to climb up one of the legs of the chair for several minutes before finally giving up. Another time, it got stuck trying to back off the carpet for no apparent reason, whereas without the mop it would just go up on the carpet and keep going. They must have tested the mop under the most ideal conditions and not in a real house. Hopefully, this is a software bug that will eventually be fixed, but until then, the mop has been shelved. Overall, if you are looking for a great robotic vacuum at a good price (when it's on sale), and if you don't have a shed-master dog or don't mind cleaning out your dog's hair every few days, I would highly recommend it. If you need a combination vacuum and mop, this is probably not the robotic vacuum you are looking for. ... show more
