I have a 2016 Prius C that this bag was used on. We took a 1400 mile round trip to Myrtle Beach and back with the bag. During the trip I got 42 mpg but have no other comparable trips to determine the difference the bag made to gas milage. The Prius C is rated at 45 highway and I rarely get below that so I'd guess about a 3 mpg decrease is likely. I expected a larger impact so was surprised. I used the pad that Rightline Gear sells to prevent damage to the roof of the car. The bag smells like an inner tube and made all of our stuff temporarily smell the same but it quickly wore off our gear once it was out of the bag. It didn't prove to be an issue. The clips that hold the bag in place worked well but at first it sounded like the door was just slightly open at speeds greater than 40 mph. I assume this is from the weather striping being compressed and letting a tiny bit of air in as a result. It quickly became background noise and wasn't terribly bothersome. The same compression of the weather striping did become an issue on our drive back from the shore. During periods of heavy rain all four of the clips caused leaking water to get into the car and onto us. This might be remedied by putting some foam or universal weather striping on the back of the clip so the seal of the door isn't compromised when compressed. I didn't try this though since the bag didn't hold up to its first trip. The bag needs to be loaded with a bias toward the front of the car if not full. The first time I loaded the bag with most of the stuff toward the front of the car and had no trouble. Driving at 70+ mph there was no flapping of the bag. The second time I packed it more spread out the bag flapped loudly at 50 mph till I reloaded it with most of the gear toward the front of the car again. Once this was done I was able to drive full speed again without flapping. In the future I will load the bag first with everything I can and only put gear inside my car if it won't fit in the bag. It seemed the more filled the bag was the better it worked at speed. On our return portion I stuffed the bag out with blankets and towels which seemed to work well to prevent flapping. It rained for about eight hours on our 1400 mile trip. No rain penetrated to the inside of the bag during that time. The zipper has a rain flap but the entire bag also folds down around the edges to add another layer of protection for the zippers. Unfortunately this is where I had durability issues with the bag I received. The welding holding the Velcro on did not hold up and came off completely on each end, it also began coming off on the middle piece as well. I've included a photo to show the issue. I will be returning the bag because of this and will not be exchanging it for another due to this and the leaking issue mentions before. We stopped halfway to sleep overnight and we were able to take the entire bag off the car, load it onto a luggage cart, and take it into our room without unpacking it. This was great as we had some concerns about the security of the bag at an overnight stop. Once we were at the beach we were able to remove the bag, fold it and store it in the trunk of the Prius. No need to drive around the entire week with a hard shell turtle on top of the car. ... show more

This rooftop carrier was ordered because our car, Camry, does not have roof racks, and we needed to haul quite a bit more than the trunk of the car holds. Our trip was 750 miles one way, 2 days long and through heavy rain one of the days. Nothing in the carrier was wet, or even damp. There was no sign of any leakage. We followed the instructions carefully to prevent leakage from happening. The carrier is larger than expected; more than ample for our need so we filled it with some lightweight things to help make it full as was recommended by the manufacturer. We purchased the rubber mat as well to protect the roof and aid in non slippage of the carrier. Our advice is based on one way trip only and in hopes we feel much differently on the return trip. I think we placed the mat and carrier too far forward on the roof. I wanted to be able to see at least a couple inches of the carrier through the sun roof window. Possibly a bad mistake as the wind lifted the 2 inches of the mat that exceeded the carrier’s front edge (zippered side was facing the rear as instructions indicated) and slapped it constantly against the roof and window. It was deafening, so we stopped after 10 miles and cut off about 4 inches of the mat. That helped for a while but the wind also lifted the front end of the carrier and made a howling sound. We upped the volume of the radio and accepted the noise given we were in a driving rain storm. The carrier was too heavy to take off to readjust during our overnight stay, so the next day I eventually stopped the car when the front of the carrier lifted high enough to expose more of the mat causing slapping and wind howling as strong as the day before. I opened the sunroof and from the inside and we ripped off as much of the mat as we could. We finished the trip with just the howling wind sound. We tightened the straps every time we stopped, but never were the straps in need of more than a tug. On our return we will put very heavy items at the front of the carrier and place what’s left of the mat and the carrier much further back on the roof but with no part of the mat extending beyond or near the front or sides of the carrier. If that does not work to mitigate the wind tunnel sound and slapping noise, I will update this review. Otherwise, it’s a sturdy carrier that holds a lot. Our initial concern that there was no lock on the carrier for safety protection at our overnight accommodation was quickly dismissed after realizing that the zipper wasn’t easily slid open so a quick heist was not likely; or if someone had the desire to lift off the carrier as heavy as it was, then maybe they needed the contents more than us; or we might see the carrier tossed aside on the highway within a few miles if they had the same slapping and howling experience. ... show more
