  • Rugged, powerful, fast and FUN!
The media could not be loaded. I fly drones, A LOT. But, I'm new to the RC dirt racer hobby. I don't think I could have found a better buggy to start out with. The HBX (Haiboxing) Protector 1:12 scale RC model is very well made with the best quality parts and materials. It's extremely rugged, with great 4WD and independent suspension. The huge motor and ESC (electronic speed controller) are the powerful heart of this beast. And with the dual battery set up, it will run, run and RUN! I went out and played for 20 minutes on the first run and STILL had plenty of battery left. This package includes two EXTRA batteries, so you're guaranteed to get your satisfying time with this bad boy. The front bumper/skid plate is spring loaded on the nose to help lessen the severity of head on impact. The chassis is really tough composite material. The battery compartments are easily accessed, without lifting the canopy. So quick changing makes for less down time. The batteries are a common type, making spares readily available. The canopy will open with the removal of two pins, tilting toward the front. (NOTE: be careful as you open the canopy. There is a wire from the chassis to the Baja lights on the top that CAN be stressed as you tilt the canopy forward.) Under the canopy, you have full access to the motor, ESC, the entire drive train and suspension. You can see in the first picture, where I swapped out the shocks for the all metal, oil capped shocks. I also increased the lift by changing the mounting point on the lower swing arm to the closest in. Just one of the upgrades available. Next, I'm going to swap out the drive shafts for the metal versions (which may take a while, there are no instructions and I'm pretty green), and eventually swap out the skin sections of the canopy. All of these upgrades are available from HBX on Amazon. The second picture is a shot of what you get in the package. Shots 3 and 4 are of the car as it arrives in the package. Finally, in the video, you can see how powerful the buggy is, and how well it handles rough terrain. I crashed it, flipped it, rolled it and it didn't even show a scratch. The controller is super responsive, from granny to rocket. The steering servo can be aligned perfectly with the controller and is super responsive, steering is fast and accurate. I didn't take it out on the pavement for an all-out speed test. But, from it's action in the dirt, I can say that it's probably so fast that I will never use the whole throttle on the street. I have the HBX Hail Storm too. A 1:18 model and it's a lot of fun. But, the Protector is a real beast! For my fist 1:12 scale true hobby grade RC buggy, I'm more than satisfied! Great purchase! Five BIG stars! Update: One of the things that makes this hobby so fun is doing the upgrades and modifications to your model, customizing it to your liking. Haiboxing has many upgrades available for the Protector. I have purchased a few. There are even more upgrades available for 1:12 scale RC buggys that may work for the Protector, bur are after market parts. For the novice, someone that is just getting into this hobby, doing these upgrades can be a great learning experience, requiring much research on YouTube, etc. However, you would expect some instructions to come with the parts, on how to install them. Maybe I expect too much. But, I can say that I am disappointed that no instructions came with the replacement axles and that the only advice or support that I could get from Haiboxing was to look it up on YouTube. Of course, there are no videos specific to the Protector and replacing the axles. So, I am kind of stuck, trying to watch videos of other models, and trying to apply those demos to the Protector. It's my fear that I may break something, or install it wrong, causing damage to the model. I did find some YT vids on how to do the axle upgrades on another HBX model. I think that it will be the same for mine. ... show more

  • Decent durability and Value-For-Money make up for a lack of upgrades.
First off, this is definitely a hobby-grade (albeit entry-level) RC. 2S ready ESC on my unit, and a decently sized motor make this perfectly capable for bashing around a dirt track or skate park. In three months of ownership it has mostly survived a decent bashing, with the only issue being the control arm popping off a few times (it seems as though the hardware used to fasten certain suspension components isn’t the best). It is worth noting that, while it states LiPo capable on the ESC technical specs, the ESC and motor generate quite a lot of heat when used so. It is reasonably quick for bashing around on a LiION, so I would go that route as to not burn out the components preemptively. As far as chassis upgrades go, there doesn’t seem to be any. It’s a fairly common layout, but most of the parts seem to be proprietary with the exception of the shocks. As it is a standard RC build, most if not all of the electronics can be easily upgraded. Will it beat the Losi Lasernut that it takes inspiration from? Absolutely not. Is it fun to bash around and durable enough for a kids present? Certainly, and a lot nicer than any non-hobby grade basher. ... show more

  • Great car, prepare for fixes if you're rough
I bought two of these remote control cars, one for my son and one for myself. I'd say we're "beginners", but it's not rocket science to drive one of these. Mostly we'd go to the baseball field near our house, a dirt road, or to the skate park. That's about as off road as we typically get. The good: These are fast, have great battery life, and are a ton of fun! Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and would recommend them to others. The bad: We've had some "parts failures", mainly with items coming off. On my car, one side of the driveline came off and was lost. The car kept running just fine since it's four wheel drive (so it essentially became two-wheel drive), but there was some performance loss. Later, my son's shocks fell apart as did one of the front drivelines, and though we found most of the pieces we didn't find enough to put it all back together. Luckily, parts are available and in both cases I was able to buy them and replace the broken/missing parts with new ones. But those are basically the same parts of the same quality, so I expect other failures. It's not that the parts necessarily break, but the screws and pieces holding them on to the car come apart, and so the parts go with it. On a positive note, I've found working on these cars to be easy and sort of fun in itself. ... show more

  • Great value!
Great for smooth, dry terrain, including grass, before mods. Not at all a rock racer or crawler. Gets hung up fast. Got this for when nieces and nephews come over and want to run something. My yard is a bit chewed up after removing my lawn to go desert motif with a dry creek bed running the length of the yard. Car gets high centered on any rock or dirt clod 1" or more in height or if a tire dips into a hole. These issues are primarily due to unlocked diffs. Review youtube for "how to lock an r/c diff" and you'll find an easy solution. However, I chose to start with swapping in the 1.9" tires from my 1/10 Blazer and voila. No more hang ups! Much better ground clearance and traction to push over obstacles. However, these tires will stress the drivetrain, especially if a tire get locked under a branch or the car pushes against something tall that it can't climb. Due to the added traction the tires won't spin in those scenarios, so the motor just groans vs. spinning the tires. The plastic hubs will eventually split if I do that often...but there are nice upgrades...including the motor. Otherwise the motor readily spins these tires on loose dirt....great drifting! ... show more
