  • Hook is too small, overall this is junk.
If the diameter of the eye on your boat is greater than 3/8" (9mm) this hook won't work. The spring loaded gate that keeps the winch hook from falling off can't close. I'm probably going to have to modify the gate so it will work. Edit: After using this winch for a full fishing season I can tell you that this winch is pretty much junk. I have a 20' center console (1700lb hull w/ Suzuki 140) and it will barely pull it onto a roller trailer that's well into the water. The body of the winch flexes so much that the gear on the drum rubs and binds. Also, the lump created by where the webbing strap attaches to the drum makes it much harder to crank in when you hit the high spot on the wrap of webbing. I'm a fairly strong guy and there were times that I thought I wouldn't be able to get my boat back on the trailer, or the winch was going to break. My previous cable winch was very easy to crank the boat in. You've been warned. ... show more

  • Spool doesn't lock properly.
Spend the extra few bucks! My Jetski slid off my trailer at the boat ramp after loading, took three guys to help me get it back on and it snapped a bunk as a result. My old winch never had this problem. I noticed that the straps tension would loosen up slightly after driving to and from the ramp occasionally. There is no proper way to lock the crank. It's either tighten or loosen and it pops out of what you have it set to while driving. The hook clapse is also too small to close. Thankfully I was going so slow that it only shipped the hull when is slid off. If I had been going down the high way God help anyone behind me. ... show more

  • Worked for 5 launches, then stripped
Installed on trailer for 15' Boston Whaler - not a big or heavy boat and well within the rated specs of the winch. It worked great 4 times. On the fifth time the crank handle stripped where it attaches to the drive spindle. Wow that's some soft steel - very disappointed and in retrospect not even sure it was safe to use. Sure I could just weld the handle to the shaft, but if the metal is that soft I'm not willing to risk it. I'll be getting a different winch. This one turned out to be phenomenally poor quality. UPDATE: I decided to reach out to Reese on the off chance I just got a dud, and was pleasantly surprised they immediately approved a warranty replacement after I sent them pictures (they did say they wanted the old winch back and would include a return shipping label when they sent out the replacement). But it's now been over 40 days, no replacement has arrived, and they've stopped responding to emails. Total radio silence. I wish I could take away the one star I gave them! UPDATE #2: Another month went by and what shows up in the mail but a new winch. Exactly the same design with exactly the same flaws (and no return shipping label for the old one). So a fail in almost every way imaginable. SUMMARY: Get a different winch from a different company. ... show more

  • Works Well, Rugged And Was Easy To Install
I was happy with this winch and it was a drop in replacement for my Dutton-Lainson DL1100A. My old winch was rated for 1100 lbs., but this new one is rated for 1500 lbs. The winch and ratchet are well made and easy to use. The hole-pattern is for 3/8" bolts with spaces for up to 5 bolts. My trailer only needed two of the holes to mount it. The five bolt spaces (actually 4 holes and one slot) are in a T shaped pattern. The leading row of 3 holes (forward end near ratchet handle) forms the T that that is perpendicular to center of the trailer. There is one hole in the middle and two centered on either side. Each of the side holes is three quarters of an inch from the one in the middle. The 4th hole is along the centerline and one inch back from the leading center hole. The rear slot (under spool) ranges from about four inches to three inches center to center, back from the leading center hole. I only needed the leading center hole and rear slot to mount it to my trailer. ... show more

  • poor customer service. New winches should last over a couple times to the lake
Bought this winch for a 16.5' fish and ski boat. Strap broke while going to lake so I contacted customer service. They replied after 2 or 3 days and wanted a copy of sales receipt, picture of boat, picture of winch, description of how it was mounted and used. They said they could then address the warranty. No problem there, I sent pictures of everything and 3 more days later no response. Needed a replacement strap to go fishing so ordered a new one but not one from Resee. Can't wait weeks on end for a $10 part. ... show more

  • Terrific Replacement Trailer Winch
Wanted to replace the trailer winch on a boat trailer I purchased recently that had a bent handle. After pricing the cost of just replacing the handle I decided to buy a whole new winch. Was a bit surprised at how much larger this unit was over the one I was replacing, but that was a good surprise. I am really impressed by this winch, which bolted up easily and the price was unbeatable complete with the strap. The flip lever controls the directly and there is no free-spool, which is good for safety. Look forward to putting the winch to use at the lake soon. ... show more

  • Good Product With A Big Flaw
Nice, sturdy winch but the hook opening is far too small and the safety latch on the hook will not close. I've seen this in other reviews as well. Sounds like something that the company should fix.

  • Great boat winch!
Overall: This is a great winch. I bought it to replace my boat winch and this was meant to be a direct fitment, however the center hole was off by about 1 inch. It is solid built and almost identical in quality to the one I had on there which lasted 25 years. The belt is solid and strong. Came on the winch straight with no kinks of twists. The clip on the front is a little big for most boats but I made it work. The handle isnt the nicest to wind up but it is smooth. and straight. The locking latch is tight and it will have no problems holding it weight. Pro's: Solid Well made Strong Solid Latch Con's No mounting bolts included Size of the clip ... show more
