  • Heats a 12 foot Intex outdoor pool beautifully
This heater is really intended to be installed by a professional pool installer, which I am not. That said, if you're comfortable plumbing your own Intex pool, this isn't much harder - you just add the heater in between the pump outlet and the pool inlet, and you can use standard 1.5" Intex hoses to do it (so just buy one extra). This is the weakest pump, and it'll raise our 2000-gallon pool a little less than 1 degree F per hour. This means we keep the pool around 85 degrees, and if we think a day is going to be a pool day (i.e., a high above 75 and low wind), we up the temperature to 93 in the morning, and by afternoon pool time, it is toasty warm. This easily extends our season in Minnesota by three months (about 1.5 months on either side), and it makes our mid-80s spring and summer days all "pool days". If you have more than a 2000-gallon pool, this means you'll probably want to size up. I wouldn't use the 5.5 kW on anything larger than ~3000 gallons, and even then, you're getting down to half a degree an hour. The biggest downside to this (or really any) electric pool heater is that it requires 240V service. Because I don't feel safe making changes to our house's electrical box, we had to hire an electrician to install a new 240V service on our box and run a line to a 240V outlet in the back of our house, and this install cost more than this heater, the pump, the filter, and the pool _combined_. Even so, 93 degree pool year round... warm night swimming... no worries about chilly days or rain dropping the pool temp... totally worth it! One other consideration - the heater requires a flow of 15 gpm in order to activate. This is a HARD requirement. I emailed Raypak tech support, who were not super helpful, but they did clearly communicate that this cannot be changed or fudges under any circumstances. Importantly, the ratings on your pool pump are probably "optimistic" in that they assume reeaaaally ideal conditions. We had a 1000 gph filter pump which is _in theory_ between 16 and 17 gpm even with our 1.25" hoses, but according to the Rayvak, it never passed 14, and when it started to get dirty, it dropped down to 12 or 13. We ended up having to swap it out for a 2100 gph pump (i.e., 35 gpm), which we know is overpowered for a 1.25" system, but that was necessary to increase line pressure enough to keep the thing consistently above 15. Even with this new system, the Raypak usually registers around 17 gpm, which is less than half what the pump is rated for, and it goes down to 16 when it gets really dirty and needs a backwash. OVERALL QUITE AN ADVENTURE IN POOL HEATING ... show more

  • Have not been able to use it yet
My 1000gph pool pump would not work with this heater but they don’t tell you thst so I had no choice but to replace a brand new filter pump with a bigger one. It’s not installed yet so idk how or if it will work ok

  • For smaller spas
I purchased this to replace an older unit after the big TX freeze in the winter of 2021. I should have gotten a unit with higher voltage as this one will not heat up the spa in the winter. It does fine during summer months.

  • Take time to heat
I know it's not the fastest or most efficient heater but it's used for specific situations in specific places where you don't have access to natural gas or just don't want to have that amount of water that heaters vote down so if your pump it is working 24 hours this heater is going to keep your water perfectly warm I have 24 pools that use this same heater without any problem of course in cold weather they spend a little work to get to 100 degrees but they do it ... show more

  • Poor quality
So the system itself works great to hest my spa, however the quality of the outside of the unit complete rusted after being outside for 1.5 years. When I contacted raypak for replacement parts, they responded that they are not available. My suggestion is figure out a way to protect unit.
