I am a first time cat owner. I never realized that most cat litters have some type of scent added to them. The first litter I purchased was Arm & Hammer clump and seal. When I first poured it out of the box there was an overwhelming floral fragrance. I hated the scent of it and smelling the floral smell every time I had to scoop the box. So I went on a hunt for unscented litter and found the Tidy Cats Free & Clean. I am never looking back!! I LOVE this litter! I am sure my cats appreciate the switch too. It is truly unscented, and has much less dust than the Arm & Hammer litter. It clumps perfectly in addition to controlling odor. I keep one of the litter boxes right behind the couch and I can never smell it. I asked my brother if he thinks the litter box smells and he said he doesn't smell anything. Full disclaimer: I do scoop twice a day so I'm sure that contributes to the no smell. Weirdly enough, there seem to be inconsistencies in the different batches of litter. I first ordered 2 20 lb jugs, and when I went to order it again, it was out of stock, so I ordered the 40lb box of litter. As you can see in my pictures, there is a color difference. The litter in the jugs is white while the litter in the box is gray. Thankfully, the litter performs the same regardless of the color. I just thought it was odd that there was such a large color inconsistency. One more thing to add: this litter does track like crazy. The texture of the Free & Clean is more gritty (like small gravel) which is why I think it tracks more. But, I am willing to look past that because of how well it performs. Best litter we've used to date! Edged out Dr. Elsey's and Scoop Away. We gave it a few weeks to confirm. Odor Control: Superior to Dr. Kelsie's and Scoop Away, the closest contenders so far. Haven't smelled the box at all from my usual sitting distance approx. 12-13 feet away. Haven't even smelled it much from closer. Must be the activated charcoal! Occasional mild whiffs while cat is actively pooping or when scooping extremely fresh messes (oxymoron), but that's not the litter's fault! Okay, cat was intrigued by tape measure and decided to poop and scratch litter. Let me test it for you one more time...three minutes later, don't smell anything! Dust: Excellent, haven't noticed dust so far! Clumping/Ease of scooping: Purina Tidy Cats also litter stood up much better to our humid weather (Hawai'i) Generally, scooping gets "draggy" as the general tropical humidity takes it's toll on other litters, so much so that the surrounding litter begins to resemble loose "pooling," and takes on an overall low grade stagnant odor, separate from actual poop or urine odor, leading to premature full change-outs. Tidy Cats clumps only where there is an actual mess. No "mystery clumps" due to general humidity. The surrounding litter stays as dry as if we were in the desert! We like to get our money's worth and try to stretch products whenever we can. With this formula, it's been three weeks and we have not done a full change. Just topping it off as the level goes down. Having company is often a motivation to completely dump the old and bring in the new. Often, I do the pre-company sniff test and order an immediate full change! So far, we've had company 3X, no need to change, house smells great! Tracking: A little, but minor. We're also using the large litter box and not our usual jumbo, which could be a contributing factor. I'll have to analyze this to compare if we ever use another brand again. Overall, the odor control, extremely low dust, and easier scooping benefits make this minor tracking no issue at all! Price: Price was slightly higher than Dr. Elsey's. About $2.49 higher for 40 pounds. It was more difficult to compare with Scoop Away due to so many size/quantity/price choices, Prime/non-Prime, etc. but it was close enough. I feel this is more economical because we are doing fewer change outs, not to mention the joy of freshness and easier scooping! Yes! Additional info: Two cats. One mostly indoor, supervised outdoor. One indoor/outdoor, generally poops outside, uses litter box only when we're away or on rainy days. We use a disposable tray, Nature's Miracle or Kitty's Wonder Box (highly recommend disposable litter boxes...you'll thank yourself!!!) We look for unscented litter, excellent odor control, low dust, low tracking. Will buy again...Highly recommend! ... show more

    • Why I switched and why I’ll never go back

Let me just say how much I love this litter. I used to use Arm & Hammer multi cat and while it clumps great I couldn’t stand how my entire house smelled like cat litter from the overbearing perfume they use every time I walked in the room all I could smell was the cat litter and it was driving me insane on top of how every time I scooped I felt like I needed a mask due to the dust this prompted me to look for something else and after reading good reviews I decided to give this a try and boy am I glad. The litter not only clumps amazingly leaving nothing behind but it has very little dust and absolutely no smell to the litter itself. Another amazing feature is I went 24 hours with two indoor cats without changing it and still couldn’t smell that the cats had used it it wasn’t until I went to clean it I found that it was pretty full of urine and feces with very little smell even while scooping it out. I will be purchasing this litter from now on and I’m glad I switched would recommend this to everyone who hates perfumed litter and dust! ... show more

    • Best odor suppressing litter I've purchased so far.

Being a cat owner for the last 18 years, you're always on the hunt for anything that makes emptying the litter box more tolerable... or just living with a litter box in general. I have tested so many litters over the years. I always stayed away from Tidy Cats because previous experience was a hot mess... clumps that crumbled into a bajillion pieces, the scent... Anyway, with that being said, I decided to give Tidy Cats another try after several years when I saw they had an unscented charcoal version (even though I prefer fragrance free, as unscented still has a faint scent). The test for me was the moment my face was hovering over the litter box as I carried out the very unglamorous task of sifting for nuggets and boulders to toss into my litter bin. The stink was minimal. I mean, let's be real -- it's waste. It will stink. Though, this time, it was not as offensive as usual. The charcoal did what it was supposed to do. As for the clumping -- it seems to be much improved since the last time I used it, however, if you accidentally stab a clump, it'll crumble a bit rather than remaining tight and just breaking in half like I've experienced with other litters. TL;DR: Works great for minimizing the odor, clumping still so-so, though much improved over the years. All-in-all, my new litter for the kit-cats. ... show more
