  • Nothing is Built to Last Anymore!
Color: Black-3d
I bought this clock to replace a similar model (but under a different brand name that no longer exists) that failed in just over 6 years. It stopped running and I figured it needed a new battery, but replacing it didn’t start it going again (I tried several.) The clock that one replaced was about 45 years old! It was also a small, plastic, single AA battery operated alarm clock; it was still running fine. The alarm set knob had broken off many years ago, but more importantly, my eyesight isn’t what it was and I decided to get a clock with a somewhat larger face. The one that this one replaced kept good time and was used in the bathroom. I never used the alarm, but I did hear it “click” when it reached the “set” alarm time. Being a bit OCD, I did set it so that the click occurred right on the hour. It took a little experimentation to get it right, but it can be done. Even though it had a sweep second hand and didn’t “tick” per se, it did “chug” along (sort of reminded me of the little engine that could!) Its instructions said not to use an alkaline battery, but I did anyway. My belief was that this model’s voltage tolerance was designed too tight resulting in a significant number of them failing when new (due to normal variations in manufacturing.) Instead of redesigning it, they just amended the instructions. Since mine didn’t fail I figured it could tolerate alkaline batteries, but perhaps that was a factor in its eventual failure. This new one has been redesigned somewhat. They point out that the alarm on/off switch is new and they no longer say anything about not using an alkaline battery. In fact, the instructions have been updated with voltage specifications for alkaline’s and say to be sure to use a new battery to ensure sufficient voltage for proper operation. They also mention things that I’ve not seen before, such as not turning either of the set knobs “backwards” (against the direction specified by the arrow.) It makes sense, I just never thought about it. They say that doing so will damage the clock’s movement! Working fine so far and keeping good time, but I’m a little concerned how “unevenly” the second hand moves; it’s not smooth at all! It acts like it’s too heavy for the clock’s movement (when it “climbs” back up to “12” it nearly stops moving multiple times, but even coming “down” the other side it’s still “hitchy”!) It does, however, seem to be completely silent! When I bought the clock this one replaced I also bought a smaller one to see how small it was; it was too small! It is a Peakeep like this one and has been in storage since then. When the old clock failed I took it out and put in a battery (might as well use it until the new one arrives.) Its second hand moves just like this clock’s! I thought that the behavior was due to it’s sitting in a box for 6 years, and to some degree that seems to be true. It is moving “a bit” more smoothly now, but it’s still quite irregular! I’ll update this review if there is any new information, but so far so good! ... show more

  • Great for older generation
Color: Black
I got this for my 90 year old mom after her old clock broke. She wanted something easy to use on her nightstand a couple of times a week when she needs an alarm to get up. She loves it and has no trouble setting alarm and turning it off. There’s no am or pm so she turns the alarm on when she goes to bed and turns it off with the button on the back so it doesn’t go off in the evening as well. It is exactly what she needed. It starts soft and increases in volume as it beeps. ... show more

  • Nice bright white color!!!
Color: White
I purchased for the bright white color. I tried others that looked bright white but in person were a dingy white. I wish the arms and/or dial were coated with fluorescent so you could see them at night. It has a button that you push to light it at night so not really a problem. It has so far kept good time and is a nice unobtrusive size. I am very happy with this clock and recommend this nice, small alarm clock!!!. Love it!!! ... show more

  • Works after minor fixing.
Color: Black
Positive things first: The clock is very legible and seems to keep good time with a silent quartz movement - it has an alarm alert sound and volume with is fine enough to get your attention if you are already awake... however I don't think I'd trust it to get me up out of bed, as I'm a pretty heavy sleeper. Your success with it as an alarm clock may vary. Its construction is all plastic which shouldn't surprise anyone at this price point. I will say that it seems like fairly durable plastic... the case at least seems like it might take a decent knock without shattering to pieces though I'm reluctant to test that theory. The tiny LED light works nicely to illuminate the clock face. In this clock at least, it operates as a "push-to-illuminate" button - you have to keep holding it down for it to remain lit. This is probably because the same top button also serves as the "snooze" function. It also means that you won't accidentally be able to click the switch to some On-position and forget about it as the LED light burns through battery energy. Its a decent travel-size, very portable. Does not come with a case like a true "travel-clock" has, so it is being kept in the box it came in going from home to work... just to provide some measure of protection. Now for the less-than-positive issue: I bought this little clock for my Mother who is currently teaching remote with her students - she needed something she could bring back-and-forth to either work or home (depending on where she was teaching from) to make sure each student got their minutes of time in with her. She keeps it in the box, it goes in one of her school bags she takes along with her. It's not getting beat-about by burly baggage-handlers or rattling around in the tool box of a truck bed, is what I'm trying to say. Exactly ONE DAY after the 30-day return policy expired, she called me and said that the second hand had fallen off. Now, not necessarily the end of the world - but still pretty annoying. I mean, for 11 bucks I was expecting a gingerly-handled product like this to last at LEAST maybe 6 months - maybe a year? with no real issue? No such luck. The good part about it all, was that it seemed to be an easy fix. I took a butter-knife and carefully lifted the sides of the clear plastic front covering away and off of the face of the clock. It was pressure-mounted, with no hardware to unscrew or release with clips, so yay for cheaply-made consumer goods? After that was quickly set aside, I just carefully aligned the second-hand back on the central rotating spindle mechanism and pressed it in with gentle force. It began moving as it should, the effort resulting in a clock that now has its seconds-hand back and operating again. I wasn't going to use glue - because I'd probably lock up and freeze all the hands of the clock - so instead, if the second-hand falls off again, we've agreed to just pry off the front cover once more and remove the hand from the clock entirely. Mom doesn't really NEED a seconds-hand, so long as the rest of the clock works. As for working - it's chugging along. Other than that seconds-hand falling off, it seems to continue to operate well...as a time keeping machine. Part of me remains suspect that maybe everything I need to know about the build-quality has been represented by that detaching hand... but I also feel like potentially it was just a fluke thing, or maybe the guy in the factory who's job was to tap the seconds-hand onto the clocks with a tiny brass hammer just wasn't feeling himself that particular day? Didn't tap the hands quite hard enough? Who knows. Mom is willing to keep using it, if it does something horrid of stops working out of nowhere, I'll be sure to chime back in. Other than that one issue, she likes the clock for everything else about it. If this thing manages to last for a solid year or more, I'll give it another star - but for right now, I think 3 stars is being generous only because it did require some minor intervention of my own to correct a part that fell off. Generally, I'd expect that shouldn't happen to MOST people, so I'll see what the next 11 months brings and if I reconsider my rating. ... show more
