  • Better than I expected
Size Name: 0.262X2"X40"
We have an old 16’ wooden heavy garage door from the 80’s and already had the springs replaced professionally some years ago. This time I chose to do it myself and bought these springs which were the next thicker wire size and a longer spring. These look like better quality springs than what I’m replacing and we paid a pretty penny for those things years ago. The cones actually look identical as the old ones. The price was good and they arrived on time just as promised. Very happy about that. There is some valuable information online regarding spring selections and also some helpful videos on YouTube that walked me through this process. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do this if you use caution. I budgeted the afternoon and had all the tools laid out ahead of time. The instruction sheet was more informative than I expected and the winding rods fit well and have a nice non-slip rubber handle which was handy. Unwinding the remaining old spring was the biggest challenge for me as one of the previous installers was a hack and overtightened the set screws which distorted my main tube preventing the old cone from rotating as it should during the unwinding process. Patience won out and the rest of the disassembly went well. Have some big vice grips handy for the main bar to help keep the assembly locked in place once you get the cables back on their respective pulleys and slack out. Also had some big c clamp vice grips on the track just above the roller to keep the door closed until I’m ready for it to move. Before winding I used a white paint pen and a straight edge to draw a line along both springs and then had a helper to come verify and call out round counts as I wound them 90* at a time. Remember to position yourself to the side of the assembly and not facing it. 30 was my count target number for each spring and as it turned out I didn’t need to readjust at all. Took off the upper bar clamp and the c clamps and she was balanced close enough that my wife could easily raise and lower this beast of a door which she never could before. Hooked up the trolley on the opener and she worked smooth and quiet on the first try. I think the coating on the springs also help to make the door quiet and smooth. Very happy with them so far! ... show more

  • These springs work just fine...
Size Name: 0.243X2"X36"
2" Garage Door Torsion Springs Set – Electrophoresis Black Coated Residential garage door torsion springs have three main parts: the spring, a stationary cone and a winding cone. Those cones are cast aluminum. The winding cone has two set screws, typically with a 3/8" square head. If a cone on any new spring set is defective, one solution is to unscrew it, remove, and use the comparable cone from your old spring. Search You Tube on “take cones off garage door springs” for videos that show how easy this is. Also, inspect the winding rod’s fit in a spring set’s winding cone holes BEFORE starting the job. E.g., it’s easier to deepen a winding cone hole before the spring is installed. While the majority of Amazon customers were fully satisfied with this spring set, some issues were raised: - a customer reviewer complained that his 24" springs were shorter than his old 28" springs and another said the spring wires weren’t as thick as the original set – even though they received what they ordered. That is not the fault of the product or the vendor. - some customers didn’t receive winding rods or delivery was too slow; either of which is a delivery/packaging issue, not a product quality issue. Winding rods are simply ½" x diameter 18" steel rods, available locally. - one reviewer said his “set broke immediately” without any photos, description, or evidence detailing what actually broke; rendering that review unhelpful. - another customer said “both springs came apart” on an 8' high door. A possible reason was his choice of 22" long springs -- pretty short for 8' tall doors. Tightening 22" springs with (34) quarter winds (industry norm for an 8' door), puts a tremendous strain on such short springs. E.g., my 7' x 16' door uses 36" springs, so they are under far less stress, with thirty quarter winds. - some reviewers complained that the "L" and the "R" markings on the springs were reversed – one customer mounted the L spring on the left and the R spring on the right – which is backward. He had to redo the install. The L means left wind (counter clockwise) and R means right wind (clockwise). Right wind springs go on the left (from the garage inside) and left wind springs go on the right. This is true for all garage torsion springs. - one customer blamed the product after he broke a left stationary cone when tightening it against the right stationary cone. The supplied photo shows the reason: that customer installed the left cone bearing backwards, with the bearing stop rim facing that cone – causing the cone’s cast aluminum to break when tightened. Any stationary cone’s cast aluminum would have failed doing that... - no warranty. Unless the product is returned within the allowed window, usually 30 days, this is a legitimate issue. However, very few Chinese sellers have a warranty process in place or the infrastructure to handle warranty claims. Based on Amazon blurbs for other brands of torsion springs, very few sellers offer warranties of any kind. - Some reviewers said the diameter of the supplied winding rods was too big for the winding cone holes. This can be resolved by carefully enlarging each hole with a 1/2" square end mill bit – or a standard ½" drill bit in a pinch, preferably via a drill press so as not to mess up the hole. Optionally, replace the cone with a cone from the old springs or sand the tip of that winding rod to size. - The most serious defect was that some winding cone holes were too shallow, making the winding process more dangerous. This would be a simple issue for the cone maker to resolve once and for all and it’s baffling why that wasn’t done long ago. Again, deepen the shallow holes with a ½" square end mill bit – or a standard ½" drill bit in a pinch. (One guy used a Dremel tool.) Or, replace the shallow cone it with an old cone. The hole depths on the winding cones I received varied from 3/4" to a hair over 5/8". These depth variations are the same as the winding cones on my old springs. I drilled them to a consistent depth of just over 3/4" using a ½" carbide square end mill (in a drill press with a cross vise), all available from Amazon. Correct depth winding cone holes make the potentially dangerious winding process safer. Summary – other than the winding cone hole depth, which is easily corrected, these springs work just fine. ... show more

1 of 2 of my springs broke. Color and size matched them to this set and install was easy. Replaced both springs and tested the door so it is self supported at half way open/closed point and the springs worked like a charm.
