Top Amazon Reviews

  • I Am Impressed! IT GETS THE JOB DONE!
Style: Chainsaw
This review is for the Oregon CS 1500: 15 amp, with 18 inch bar. I have used my share of gas operated chain saws, and no, this electric saw is not the same. Not the same fumes; mixing gas; buying gas, not the same weight; not the same cold start procedure and pulling a starting cord, over and over! And honestly, it is not the same power either. You cannot have it all, but if you are not in a hurry, and learn how the saw works, this little chain saw will click "all" of the dots! Yet, it would be helpful if the person that is using it has some knowledge on how to use a chainsaw. If you know the general use of a chainsaw, you will know when to back off and allow the saw to cut at its pace. I found that it will cut continuously through whatever log or tree you desire to, but again, you need to know how to manage the power of the saw. In my belief, having this general knowledge alone will resolve most of the bad reviews. Sadly, I suspect operator era in some of these cases. These are some things I learned real quick about this chainsaw: 1. It has lots of power, but it will not cut as fast as most gas powered saws, but it will cut "continuously"! This is important for me, for if it did not have enough power to cut continuously, it would have been a deal breaker for me. 2. It has a great tool less chain tension mechanism; easy to keep clean and actually easy to access. 3. The auto chain oiler does a good job even when things are constant power for prolonged periods 4. The auto sharpener is okay, I guess but I did not use it that much. 5. It is lightweight in comparison to most gas models. 6. Distance from power source: Actually, I had over 125 feet of cord at one point and I honestly did not notice a power drop. These are some things to keep in mind: 1. Each time that the chain came off, it was operator era on my part. Abrupt movement when unintentionally encountering a small sapling was one time and the other was when I was making a cut underneath a log and moved the bar sideways. 2. The chain can be placed on the bar going in the wrong direction, and this might be some peoples issue. I mistakenly placed the chain on wrong and believe me, it will not cut at all when you do this. 3. I read a couple reviews concerning the plastic build of the chainsaw and they showed pictures of melting plastic around the gear. It is quite possible that this happened, but I think if you work the saw in a method inside of its capabilities, it will not happen. If the chain is being oiled, and you are not continuously pushing the saw to the point that you hear the electrical (bog down) overload sound, then this might not happen. Such a practice will make things heat up on any engine! 4. The plastic build? Great, makes it lighter and cooler to the touch! 5. Price? Look at it this way, I have paid contractors to cut down and cut up trees around my home a few times. The smallest tree (for one tree) was 750 dollars, and upward to over $2000 for others. One of the trees I cut with this little chain saw was larger than the 750 dollar tree. So, this saw just paid for itself 7 times over! Take a look at the attached pictures. Judging by the saw dust particles distance from the application, does it look like it was not cutting? ... show more

  • Amazingly powerful and tough
Style: Chainsaw
At first I wasn't sure if this chainsaw would do a thorough job of cutting trees, but it exceeded my expectations. I felled three 90-year old (based on counting rings) ash trees with trunks about 26 to 32 inches in diameter. Cut all branches and cut all the trunks down to 18" sections for firewood with this saw. Really outstanding tool! I wasn't sure if the self-sharpening feature was a gimmick or something that would be useful, and I found it to be a really great feature. It works well! No pull starting, it's quiet when I set it down, it doesn't need a tune up and doesn't need 2-cycle oil mixture, doesn't make a bunch of noise, and no spark plugs to change, no gummed up carburetors to fidget with, and it has instant torque. For a small property owner like me with just a few trees to occasionally take care of, I will never go back to gas powered again. Keep in mind I have a generator and a 100' power cord with thick (low gauge) wire. You absolutely must get a thicker gauge power cord for this saw (per manufacturer recommendations), so remember to figure that in to your expenses. I also use a special grade chain lube for colder weather - and would not recommend running this saw (or any saw) in cold weather without a thinner viscosity lube. Overall a fantastic product for an awesome price. By the way, I just purchased my second one. Want to have a spare in the rare case I get one pinched (jammed) and need a spare to cut my way out of a the problem. ... show more

  • Great value and fantastic performance
Style: Chainsaw
I can't speak to durability as this is my review after just one day of use; however, I am very pleased with the early performance of this saw. I had read user reviews commenting on the propensity for the chain to jump its track and for the saw to overheat and melt the plastic housing. Thankfully, I had also read other reviews that suggested those issues were probably related to owners not following the guidance given in the manual for prepping the saw for first use. I will admit I am a person who does not always read through manuals, but in this case I applied myself and followed the instructions to the t, taking special care with the steps required for priming the automatic oiler and tensioning the chain. As a result, the chainsaw performed flawlessly as I cut down and sawed up three trees and trimmed back several large branches on other trees that were shading areas of my yard I wanted to garden. A couple of notes that may be of interest to potential buyers and new users: I ordered a heavy-duty 12 AGW/15-amp contractor-grade extension cord for use with the saw but it will not be delivered until tomorrow. Anxious to try out the saw and take advantage of a non-rainy spring day to get those trees knocked down, I paired the saw with a medium use 100 foot cord I already own. Part of the prep work for the automatic oiler involves taking off the bar and chain and running the saw for two minutes. I used this test to see if there was going to be an issue with the cord heating up as I would expect it to do if the load was too much for its rating. It did not heat up whatsoever and neither did it heat up during subsequent use. I still intend using the heavy duty cord I bought but I might have saved myself $65 had I known a medium use cord would serve so well. Second, I have read complaints about the automatic oiler. Mine works just fine (to date) and I want to stress that I had some anxiety going in to the experience but that I soon realized I was getting constant reassurance of performance because I was able to smell the oil. Although it is still highly advisable to track levels and periodically make a visual inspection to validate the chain is being properly coated, I worried less about dryness and chain jumping as I went along, and that was a very welcome change from the experience I had with a battery-operated saw I had previously purchased from another maker. A last comment on the oil - Oregon included a small vial with the saw I purchased and it was sufficient to prime the saw for first operation and perhaps to make a few cuts, but it would not have served to complete the tasks I performed yesterday, which probably required several hundred cuts. The instruction manual is well-written and it was not hard to follow along and get the saw prepped for first use, and I am someone who has almost zero aptitude for all things mechanical. Bonus for that, Oregon, and for the extra instruction you provide for what cuts to make and in what order to make them to fell a tree and cut it up after it is fallen. It had been 40 years since I last spent any time doing that and the refresher was very helpful. The saw is lightweight, quiet, and efficient when handled in accordance with guidelines. I could not be happier at this point, especially as contrasted to the experience I had with the battery-operated model I bought from a competitor and that has been sitting in the box after a really horrible performance on its first day of use. Again, kudos to Oregon - I could not be happier with this purchase and I do not have a single critique for this saw. ... show more
