  • I Am Impressed! IT GETS THE JOB DONE!
Style: Chainsaw
This review is for the Oregon CS 1500: 15 amp, with 18 inch bar. I have used my share of gas operated chain saws, and no, this electric saw is not the same. Not the same fumes; mixing gas; buying gas, not the same weight; not the same cold start procedure and pulling a starting cord, over and over! And honestly, it is not the same power either. You cannot have it all, but if you are not in a hurry, and learn how the saw works, this little chain saw will click "all" of the dots! Yet, it would be helpful if the person that is using it has some knowledge on how to use a chainsaw. If you know the general use of a chainsaw, you will know when to back off and allow the saw to cut at its pace. I found that it will cut continuously through whatever log or tree you desire to, but again, you need to know how to manage the power of the saw. In my belief, having this general knowledge alone will resolve most of the bad reviews. Sadly, I suspect operator era in some of these cases. These are some things I learned real quick about this chainsaw: 1. It has lots of power, but it will not cut as fast as most gas powered saws, but it will cut "continuously"! This is important for me, for if it did not have enough power to cut continuously, it would have been a deal breaker for me. 2. It has a great tool less chain tension mechanism; easy to keep clean and actually easy to access. 3. The auto chain oiler does a good job even when things are constant power for prolonged periods 4. The auto sharpener is okay, I guess but I did not use it that much. 5. It is lightweight in comparison to most gas models. 6. Distance from power source: Actually, I had over 125 feet of cord at one point and I honestly did not notice a power drop. These are some things to keep in mind: 1. Each time that the chain came off, it was operator era on my part. Abrupt movement when unintentionally encountering a small sapling was one time and the other was when I was making a cut underneath a log and moved the bar sideways. 2. The chain can be placed on the bar going in the wrong direction, and this might be some peoples issue. I mistakenly placed the chain on wrong and believe me, it will not cut at all when you do this. 3. I read a couple reviews concerning the plastic build of the chainsaw and they showed pictures of melting plastic around the gear. It is quite possible that this happened, but I think if you work the saw in a method inside of its capabilities, it will not happen. If the chain is being oiled, and you are not continuously pushing the saw to the point that you hear the electrical (bog down) overload sound, then this might not happen. Such a practice will make things heat up on any engine! 4. The plastic build? Great, makes it lighter and cooler to the touch! 5. Price? Look at it this way, I have paid contractors to cut down and cut up trees around my home a few times. The smallest tree (for one tree) was 750 dollars, and upward to over $2000 for others. One of the trees I cut with this little chain saw was larger than the 750 dollar tree. So, this saw just paid for itself 7 times over! Take a look at the attached pictures. Judging by the saw dust particles distance from the application, does it look like it was not cutting? ... show more

  • Amazingly powerful and tough
Style: Chainsaw
At first I wasn't sure if this chainsaw would do a thorough job of cutting trees, but it exceeded my expectations. I felled three 90-year old (based on counting rings) ash trees with trunks about 26 to 32 inches in diameter. Cut all branches and cut all the trunks down to 18" sections for firewood with this saw. Really outstanding tool! I wasn't sure if the self-sharpening feature was a gimmick or something that would be useful, and I found it to be a really great feature. It works well! No pull starting, it's quiet when I set it down, it doesn't need a tune up and doesn't need 2-cycle oil mixture, doesn't make a bunch of noise, and no spark plugs to change, no gummed up carburetors to fidget with, and it has instant torque. For a small property owner like me with just a few trees to occasionally take care of, I will never go back to gas powered again. Keep in mind I have a generator and a 100' power cord with thick (low gauge) wire. You absolutely must get a thicker gauge power cord for this saw (per manufacturer recommendations), so remember to figure that in to your expenses. I also use a special grade chain lube for colder weather - and would not recommend running this saw (or any saw) in cold weather without a thinner viscosity lube. Overall a fantastic product for an awesome price. By the way, I just purchased my second one. Want to have a spare in the rare case I get one pinched (jammed) and need a spare to cut my way out of a the problem. ... show more

  • quality purchase
Style: Chainsaw
Heavy duty machine with good cutting ability. Easy to handle. The self sharpener worked well after 2 hrs of cutting green oak. Only issue was there was not a back up chain with the initial purchase. This is a keeper Oregon all the way.

  • Powerful and no tools needed!
Style: Chainsaw
About a week or so ago, we had a storm that blew over a 50' tall, 14" diameter red oak. While I have a 20" gas powered chainsaw, I've been wanting try out electric saws simply for noise reduction. At around $110, this Oregon CS 1500 seemed like just the ticket. This beast arrived yesterday and I was surprised at how solid it felt. It weighs in at over 12lbs (without chain oil). There's a bit of fussing you have to do before you use it in that you need to prime the chain oiler system. This requires that the bar and chain be removed and running the motor until the oil starts flowing through the lube hole. This is pretty easy since there are no tools required to do it! The priming thing only takes 5 minutes from start to finish -- the instructions are very easy to follow. Once reassembled, I headed outdoors to attack the tree. I gathered up my 12 gauge copper 100' extension cord and got to it. This puppy is a dream to operate! The chain stops immediately upon release of the trigger, it doesn't make any more noise than a circular saw of the same amperage rating, and the chain is razor sharp! Since I was cutting up an entire tree, I needed to slightly tighten up the chain once (again, no tools needed -- just turn the dial). I also had to top off the chain oil reservoir (a small amount of chain oil comes with the saw) once. Less than 2 hours later, the tree was cut up into 20" chunks and stacked (I'll split it later). This baby never bogged down throughout the process. The chain remained sharp throughout. There is a built in chain sharpener so when I was done, I gave a quick pull of the sharpening lever and it brought it back to razor sharp in like 3 seconds. It's all ready to go for the next time. We'll see how this goes with time, but right out of the box, this thing is really pretty amazing. UPDATED March 1, 2023 Over the last few days, I've dropped four rather large trees, one of which is about 20" in diameter (oak!) about easily 65' tall. This saw continues to amaze me. The chain oil fill lasts about 1.5 hours of nearly continuous cutting. It gives me a great excuse to take a break. As I was cutting this up into 20" lengths for firewood, I noticed it works really well up to about 14-15" diameter oak logs, but larger than that, well, it takes a while. I think I'll save the thicker stuff for the gas-powered noise machine. Speaking of noise, I put a decibel meter on this little guy and it is actually loader when not under load. At 3' away, it registered about 94 db with no load and 85 db under full load. This is a whole lot better than the 115 db or so from the gas-powered saw. I hope my neighbors appreciate the difference. I keep waiting for this thing to just break from the abuse, but so far, I'm a truly happy Oregon electric owner! ... show more
