To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have:A Display The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect. A Source While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3. Content In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience. 3D Glasses All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV. HDMI Cable To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality. If you want to get more information about 3D, shop our 3D products, watch videos, or interact with other customers, visit 3D 101, our customer center about everything 3D. • My Oppo 93 Vs My PS3! The question no one could answer for me.
I own a 7.2 Definitive Technology setup, consisting of a Onkyo 5008 and Emotiva XPA-5 Amplifier, 4 Mythos STS's, 1 Mythos center chanel Ten, 2 Gem Xl's and 2 Super cube References. I recently made the purchases to go from a 7.2 to a 9.4 setup adding 2 more Gem XL's and 2 more Super cube References. So to me video and audio quality are everything when it comes to HT. I have read about the flawless reviews of the Oppo for some time now, But the question I have asked on av forums in the past that no one could answer for me is how does it stack up against the PS3. I have a LGBH200 HD DVD/Blu Ray player that has a better picture than my PS3 but my PS3's sound will destroy the LG in a audio competition. So my dilemma was to find a perfect blu ray player with audio that could match or out do my PS3 and a picture that could match or out do my LG. So I went on ahead and purchased the Oppo after much research. It arrived at my house 7 days after I ordered it. I pulled it out of the box hooked it up to my tv and updated it with the latest firmware. It took no more than 20 mts. I was amazed at what I saw and heard the picture was better than my older LG and the audio was outstanding. The sound stage of my music and movies was so much larger than before. So then I burnt some CD's to my PS3 and placed those same CD's in the Oppo so I could switch between inputs on my Receiver and hear the same songs playing at the same time and make comparisons. Wow!!! I kept switching back and forth on both of the players and the Oppo moped up my PS3, my beloved lil PS3 sounded almost puny compared to the Oppo. The PS3 sounded muffled and confined compared to the Oppo. In my lil brain I pictered the the PS3 sputtering along doing 30 mph on the feeder and the Oppo doing 160 mph on the autobahn The Oppo made music sound so much clearer and with such a larger sound stage. I have never heard music or movies sound that good in my entire life. The picture was also much clearer and had more depth than any of the Blu ray players in my house. I saw details in movies that I have never seen before. The Oppo really is a top notch player and will be hard to beat for years to come. This is one piece of Home Theater equipment that will be around for years. I just wish I would have been in the U.S sooner to have bought it earlier. It is solidly built also I am very happy with this purchase, you can't go wrong with this one I highly recommend the Oppo! Oh yeah the Oppo comes with a large and hefty remote too, so incase of a zombie attack or something along those lines while I am in my HT room I can just toss the remote at the head of the 1st intruder and that should buy me the time I need to get my 19 inch home defense 12 gauge shotgun............................UPDATE.........................20 August 2011............................So I have had the full 9.4 setup running for around 3 weeks now and the Oppo does an amazing job with all the speakers running at the same time. It is the Oppo dividing the sound into all the different speakers because the sound isn't the same in all the surround speakers when my PS3 is playing the same movie or music on the same presets on the Onkyo 5008. I have found that since I have been into Home Audio once you get to a certain level, to make small increases in audio quality it can be very expensive. But the Oppo 95 has made a major and vast difference in the Audio quality and even in the Picture quality and it does it at an amazing price. ... show more

  • A Non-geek Review
I realize that people that know a whole lot more than me will slam this review and that's fine. But, I thought I'd share my non-geek perspective. First, some history. About 4 years ago I took the home theater plunge. I bought a Sharp 52" 1080p LCD HDTV, a Yamaha RX-V1900 receiver, Aperion speakers (a 5.1 setup) and, a LG BD390 Blue-ray disc player. The LG BD390 turned out to be the weak point in my system. The picture quality was OK but the audio was poor. One of the reasons for this model was because I wanted wireless Netflix streaming. What a nightmare - the LG sees the queue but won't play anything. I resorted to using my Wii to stream Netflix and get a so-so picture and terrible audio. I looked at Oppo years ago but passed primarily because it didn't do Netflix streaming and I didn't have another way to do that. After researching all the major brands I realized that you find some pretty terrible reviews for all of the current offerings. It sounded like I was about to buy another unit that might or might not work. It also sounded like the technical support you get from the big companies was as bad as what I got from LG ("this is a Netflix problem" and "we're working on a solution"). So, that got me here. Yes, the Oppo is significantly more than the major brands. But, I placed a high dollar value on quality, support and, oh yeah - actually working! Packaging: Wow. The next time I move I'm having Oppo pack me up. Lots of foam, a strong cardboard box for the remote and accessories, and the player itself is in a tote bag. Oddly, Amazon takes the Oppo box and puts it in a larger box along with some rolled up paper. The player itself is very unobtrusive. It's got a very clean black look to it and screams out, "I'm a qualilty product!". Setup: An idiot can hook up the hardware and I proved it! Install the batteries in the remote, plug the HDMI cable into the receiver, plug in the power cord, plug in the wireless dongle. Done. The setup process after I turned it on was pretty simple with Oppo guiding you along. I have to admit that I had no idea how to answer some of the questions and the explanations didn't make a lot of sense to me. When in doubt, I went with the defaults. What was really odd was that Oppo didn't have me setup the Internet connection at this point. Wifi: After the initial setup, I went hunting for how to setup my wifi connection. You would think it was in "My Network" wouldn't you? Nope. How about "Internet"? Nope. It's buried inside the "Setup Menu". Not a big deal but I did scratch my head a bit. I was happy that it saw my home wifi and let me punch in the rather long password. I was even happier that it connected and it even showed me the signal strength. Bear in mind that you have to use the wireless dongle if you're going that way. There are two USB ports (one in the back, one in the front). Assuming you don't want the dongle sticking out of the front of your unit you'll need to plan for a bit more space - the dongle is 2 or 3 inches long. But, the good folks at Oppo also include one of those USB extender things that will let you plug the dongle into the extender and put it next to, on top of, wherever. Nice touch Oppo. [Edit] The first movie I tried now plays with no problem. No idea if this was an Oppo issue or a Netflix issue because the player updated itself when I turned it on today. I did notice that it added a few other movie services (like Picasa) which should delight some people. Remote: This is a thing of beauty. It's even more beautiful when the backlight is on. I'm not sure I'll ever need all those buttons but I'm a guy and stuff like this just appeals to me. It's easy to use BUT it's a bit sluggish. There were a number of times that I hit a button and thought, "come on already!". It also wants to be aimed directly at the player (I was about 12 feet away). I'll be adding the Oppo to my Harmony One. Maybe this gets better. Side note to save myself some grief from a more experienced user - this probably isn't a problem with the remote but with the BDP-93. My point is, if you use the remote you'll find that the response is sluggish and you have to aim carefully. Picture: I have a very old SD version of ET that I decided I'd try. On the LG this disc was OK but not great (sort of like watching TV). The Oppo kicked it up a notch and I would have sworn that I was watching a BD version. Audio: The audio for the ET disc in the LG was not so great. I'm in my early 60's and my hearing isn't what it should be (please don't tell my wife that I admitted this). The audio is leaps and bounds better on the Oppo than the LG. On the LG I had to set the receiver to stereo because I could make out the dialog better. Not on the Oppo - I set the receiver to straight and I can hear every word and, happily, get the other speakers working. Netflix: Remember that I had a problem with streaming Netflix with the LG. I setup my Netflix account on the Oppo and crossed my fingers. The queue showed up quickly but it did that with the LG so I kept my fingers crossed. The first movie I tried came up saying that the movie wasn't available for instant viewing. Huh? It's in my instant queue! I tried another movie and it worked just fine. I partially uncrossed my fingers at this point. I should note that I was able to view the first movie on my iPad with no problem. I'm still not sure the Netflix streaming is 100% but time will tell. Overall first impression: Probably a hell of a lot more player than I needed. But, like I said earlier, I really don't want the hassle and a few hundred dollars more is worth it to me. I'll update this review as I get more experience with the unit. So far - I'm a happy camper. OK geeks - comment away. Be gentle. ... show more
