  • My search is over!
I have been looking for a tiny form camera that takes better pictures than my cell phone (Samsung S22 Ultra). I am just the everyday amateur photographer. I have tried several high end point and shoots to no avail. I was a bit skeptical ordering the Olympus M5 but wanted to see if it really was as good as some of the reviews. In short, my answer is yes! The Olympus is definitely a keeper. The photos are day and night sharper and clearer than my phone and my wife's Iphone 14 Pro Max. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4.0 PRO Lens is phenomenal. The form factor is very small, so this will be coming with me on all of my future travels stuffed away in my cargo pants pocket. In case you are wondering, the plastic body feels very solid to me. so I have no concerns regarding toughness. The M5 is weather sealed which is an added bonus. There are so many lenses to choose from. The M5 can be operated in auto like a point and shoot, or it can be used in manual with all of the options that one would expect. I love this camera. ... show more

  • Great IBIS. Mediocre images.
I purchased this as a do-it-all travel camera. I was excited to test it out and see what it was capable of given the reviews. What I found is the image stabilization is at the top of its class. I could take 6 second hand-held exposures at night. The problem is the overall image quality. The RAW color-science is just not natural compared to my Canons and this makes it more difficult to edit in post. Noise is a constant problem in even moderately lit photos. I expected this camera to be slightly more noisy than my APS-C Canon but the difference was much worse--just slightly better than my 4 year old iPhone X. Don't even think about going above ISO 1000. The dynamic range is only so-so and you cannot pull much detail out of shadows without immediately getting terrible noise and banding. The 12-45mm Pro lens is nice and crisp but flares badly in longer exposures (see pic)--which kind of offsets the advantage of the IBIS. At first, I thought it was dust but the lens was completely clean. The only way around this is to use the Livecomp setting and stack multiple exposures. But this requires the camera to be on a tripod or something stationary which, again, defeats the purpose of such a compact camera. Overall, I just cannot see a place for this camera in my life. A new smartphone can take photos that are nearly as good (or even better) and can fit in my pocket. For anything more serious, I have my APS-C and full frame Canons. I really wanted to love this camera but cannot justify the high price and mediocre image quality. ... show more

  • A beautiful camera
As I get older I am concerned with the weight of my cameras and lenses, which is why I've been using m4/3 for a few years. I've generally been satisfied except for HDR. I read that the new sensor has better HDR and I didn't want to "dump"all my lenses. So I bought this small OM, after much "study". It is a beauty and a friends version (E m1 mrkiii same sensor) produces excellent pictures. However, I have "man sized hands"...ML in golf gloves. This body is tiny and way too small for me to comfortably use, so back it went to Amazon. Didn't even actuate the shutter once. They did not confirm the return until I called (8 days later) and have not yet credited my CC. Strange for Amazon since I usually get a confirmation shortly after I drop off the returns at UPS The agent I spoke with did confirm the return and as requested provided me a confirmation email. (No way to do this online... so I waited on the phone : Actually less than 5 minutes.) Will I continue to use Amazon.. .. yes. Visited my local camera store to buy into a new system. "We have no new models on display". Strange for the largest camera store chain in S. California. I guess everything is online and BB doesn't have stock on OM or Fuji..... except older models. ... show more

  • Outstanding!
I have a lot of experience with cameras and photography. I have a full frame Sony and the APS-C A6500 and that's just the beginning of the inventory. I purchased this mostly out of intense curiosity about Micro 4/3rds and, also, because I had owned the earliest Olympus OM-1 (film) a long time ago. I think I wore it out. It was unique for its time. I am amazed, constantly, by the quality of the images from this camera which rival my APS-Cs. Some reviewers talk about the menu system being difficult. You know what? All menu systems seem opaque until you get used to them. That took me about 15 minutes. The fit and finish of the camera are excellent and it's a joy to use. I must repeat: the image quality absolutely RIVALS that of any APS-C that I've used. If you're interested in making enormous prints, when then OK, the larger sensors will excel at that. This camera is lightweight, very water-resistant and possesses some of the best image stabilization I have EVER experienced. For me, Olympus has a winner here. Stay with me. I purchased the camera with the "kit" lens, the 12-45mm f4, PRO. This is no ordinary "kit" lens. It is stunning with a constant f4 throughout the range. And the 12-45mm, which equates out to 24-90mm in full frame terms, is a perfect walk around lens. I'd travel anywhere with only this lens and not feel hampered in the least. I use the lens shade that comes with it. It helps image quality. Use it. When you don't need it, it fits nicely onto the lens barrel. If you're planning on taking advantage of the camera's high resolution option, get a UV filter that can deal with that. I have the HOYA HD3 on it. Or, just remove the filter for the hi-res shots. Have fun with this little beauty. You won't be disappointed. ... show more
