  • High expectations seem justified.
Size: 6 Person Tent
Just received the tent and set it up. Overall no problems with tent set up. The poles are in sleeves which can be done with one person but easier with two. The tent base is tarp-like and crinkles but should be super durable and is without seams. When we ordered the tent, there was only one prior review which mentioned a ventilation problem. That review was from Texas and concerned that the tent couldn't be used in summer. We live in PA. Tend to camp early spring thru late fall. The main tent has a mesh top and although the windows in the fly are minor, the front of the tent has more exposure into the vestibule which hopefully allows more airflow. We intend to not close off the vestibule if it is hot out to allow ventilation. Also, we prefer shady spots and don't recall our old tent ever getting too hot but our weather is different. The tent size states 5/6 people but we only plan for 2 and will be roomy. I wouldn't put anymore than 3 adults unless you know them well. Overall, we expect this tent to work out great. The size isn't overly huge to limit spots to set up. The vestibule is the main reason we bought the tent and very impressed with size. We can easily fit two chairs and gear in it in case of rain. Plus, it will make much easier taking off and putting on shoes and not getting dirt inside tent. Gave 4 stars, only because of potential ventilation issue but in our climate, shouldn't be an issue. UPDATE: have used the tent for one year and still love it. Changed rating because ventilation wasn't a problem for us. We camped in hot weather but chose shady spots so we weren't hot at night. One weekend it stormed and rained most of the afternoon. We amused ourselves with sitting in the vestibule watching people run from their tent to vehicles to stay dry. We stayed dry!! A Few commented on how great our tent design was. Looking forward to another great year of camping. ... show more

  • Good Tent for a Good Price Point
Size: 6 Person Tent
I wanted a roomy tent for drive-in camping with the advantage of a full, water-proof rated rain fly since I live in the temperate rain forest known as the Smoky Mountains. The NTK Indy GT XL 6-person tent doesn't disappoint. Since it's just me, I can glamp to my heart's content with ample room for a full size, double height air mattress, a side table and lamp, a battery operated fan, and a bin to store my clothes to keep them from getting damp. And I still have room to stand and change clothes (I'm 5'6"). I imagine a queen size mattress and side table would fit comfortably, with an extra bin for clothes storage, but the ability to stand erect and change would be compromised. The main cabin is 8x8, so I bought a Moroccan rug the exact size of the floor for colder weather camping. I am not impressed with the quality of the bathtub floor; it's equivalent to a light duty tarp, so I think I'm going to buy a warm weather rug for summer usage. Moreover, the tent floor was advertised as a single piece of tarp, but it appears to be two pieces of tarp that are thermally sealed right down the middle of the tent. Definitely use a heavy duty tarp as a footprint. I used an 8x10 footprint to great effect, since I didn't want to use the tarp insert for the outdoor living space. The 8x10 tarp was just enough to extend two feet into the outdoor living space so I could place a small braided rug at the door and have a place to put my soggy shoes. I would not risk wearing shoes in the tent without an additional covering for the floor. The fly seams come factory sealed, but there were places on the fly I was not satisfied were factory sealed well enough. I sealed every seam on the tent and fly with a seriously wide coating of Seam Grip--8 ounces of the stuff, to be exact, with none left over. I especially sealed the floor where it appeared to be thermally bonded. And I double sealed the floor corners. After it cured for 72 hours, I then dusted every sealed seam with talcum powder to prevent the seams from sticking together. The baby fresh scent didn't linger more than a few hours after I set it up on my first trip. Although I sealed mostly the underside of the tent, take caution to seal the three fly vents both on the inside and outside of the fly--there's three layers of stitching to keep water out of. I learned that the hard way during a heavy downpour on my first trip. I also coated the underside of the fly with a polyurethane spray for extra protection. Did I say how my I hate to get the inside of my tent wet? I have yet to camp in a super buggy area, so I can't vouch for the effectiveness of the no-see-um mesh that composes the better part of the tent body. However, my backpacking tent has a high quality, very fine mesh that hasn't once gotten a run, even through years of my dog pawing at it when she wants out. It took my cat exactly two seconds to put a run in the mesh of the NTK. Her claws can get through the large pores pretty easily. It's definitely not as fine a mesh as I would prefer. And, yes, I know I was an idiot for letting my cat near my tent. I didn't know she had gotten outside. Despite the mesh, I will say the fly and tent taffeta appear to be sturdy, and the tent was sew together well--except for the design of the fly vents (three layers to seal and no factory seal on the vent triangles, really?) The length of the canopy is impressive, with enough room to store a couple of extra bins plus keep two full size camp chairs out of the rain, even with the front canopy fly zipped closed in a storm. I could stand comfortably under the canopy closest to the tent. However, with the canopy open and fully extended, a woman of average height would have to duck, if she planned on cooking under the canopy extension. The canopy extension poles are simply not long enough to stake the fly high enough for comfortable standing. And I don't think the canopy extension poles would hold under the weight of the extended canopy in a down pour due to the impressive length of the canopy. Since I usually have an additional popup canopy nearby, I simply roll the canopy extension up and out of the way unless it's raining. The canopy itself is a conestoga-style setup which requires an extra pole be applied to a sheath. I was able accomplish the threading of the pole but it was a pain in the rear with only one person to set up. Otherwise, I had no problems with the set up of the rest of the fly; it simply clips to the tent poles. The fly stretches taut over the tent with plenty of ventilation room between tent and fly, but again I'm ambivalent about the design of the actual fly vents. In a down pour I had to stake out the fly vents with small sticks to keep them from collapsing onto the tent fly. I didn't have to guy out the fly, even in some brisk 20 mph gusts of wind. One awesome thing about the canopy and fly is the color. It's not a blackout tent by any means, but it keeps the tent interior dark enough to sleep until the sun is high, if you're not parked in the direct sunlight. It might get pretty dreary though if you have to tough out a few days of rain, chillin' in the tent. The tent poles are fiberglass, and they have not been problematic in wind or rain, but they weigh a ton, are brutally unwieldy for such a large tent, and the shockcordage is not particularly tight or sturdy for the diameter and weight of the poles. I will eventually replace them with aluminum poles that I suspect will last much longer. Overall, I am pleased. The size of the tent is ample for my needs, and generally, the construction of the tent is good. I have experienced serious rain storms and not gotten wet, but I have taken extra time to seal the seams carefully. With a little love and care, and some careful placement in regards to sunlight and wind direction, I think this tent will last as long as my trusty backpacking tent--twenty dry years and counting. But I have no doubt the poles will need to be replaced at some point. Now, I'm gonna go get my glamp on and string up some sparkly, battery operated LEDs all over the canopy, just in time for my favorite camping trip of the year--Walt's Party (think a hundred and fifty fine folks getting together on a river, with great food, and great live music). Go get your party on in your party tents, ya'll! ... show more

  • Great tent.
Size: 6 Person Tent
Took it out, set it all by myself, I’m a 66 year old woman camping mostly solo with my dogs and had no problem but I’m an experienced camper. Tested it in wind, extremely heavy rain, even hail and performed flawlessly, no water got in. The roomy vestibule was handy specially when you’re stuck inside due to inclement weather, I was even able to make my coffee enjoying the sound of the rain watching outside through the transparent vestibule windows, dogs enjoyed the huge vestibule too, Plenty of room to move around specially since my dogs are not small. The only thing I can point out is that in my opinion this is not a tent for extreme hot weather but since I camp in the Sierras at high altitude I certainly appreciated keeping me warm specially at night, I definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Not a great tent if you are really camping. this is for glamping.
Size: 6 Person Tent
I purchased this tent after reading the good reviews. I made a big mistake. I am very outdoorsy and camp a lot thought out the year. This tent seemed like it was a good product but for me it didn't seem like that. The tent is set up like an old style tent, meaning that you have to push the poles through instead of having clips to just clip to the poles which is very more efficient and easy and can provide a longer life for your tent because there will not be any issues of puncturing the tent trying to push the poles through or even snapping the elastic line inside the poles trying to pull the poles out when breaking down the tent. The vestibule doesnt make sense as the 2 front poles are not fully secured and have no real place to secure them into the ground.that plastic type window on the vestibule is no good because that will trap more moisture in the vestibule part of the tent. they should have just made it the same material as the rest of the rain fly and tent. I was just at Mount Whitney portal and this tent failed to stay sturdy with wind gust at only 10 mph. also the vent triangles on the tops of the rain fly such and dont serve it's purpose , they dont stay open like that should to provide ventilation. The design of the tent and how it looks is cool but dont let that fool you. ... show more
