  • Excellent Water Bottle in Just the Right Size...
Size: 32 oz
The reason that most folks carry a "heavy" steel water bottle while in the outdoors is in consideration of the environment. But, not necessarily just because we want to keep pollution down. No, it is often because we know that the environment we will be venturing into is often extreme, and durability is key to survival. We understand that Murphy's Law is alive and well in the outdoors and we need every advantage possible. Lets face it, plastic bottle are great until you drop your pack onto a large rock or stumble and fall onto it and it comes our looking like that Dixie Cup Matt Hooper crushed in Jaws to impress Quint... They just aren't durable enough to truly depend on in unpredictable and wild places. The stainless steel used in this bottle is excellent. It is of a substantial thickness and durability without being excessively heavy. The wide mouth opening is convenient and makes the bottle easy to fill. That all being said, over the past year I've noticed how most folks, and manufacturers for that matter, are turning to either 38 oz. or 40 oz. bottles. While that may be a good choice for those out there who just want to carry more water; I find that this decision really doesn't make sense and is somewhat shortsighted. Now before you go off on a rant, please allow me to explain... To me the idea of increasing the size of a steel bottle by so little volume (about 1 cup) is senseless because it accomplishes nothing in terms of significantly improving one's hydration and just increases that weight of the bottle. Furthermore, given the expanded use of large capacity hydration systems in packs and other collapsible water carrying alternatives like a Platypus bag, etc., there are much lighter and more efficient ways of increasing the volume of water you can carry with you. Therefore, the only really valid reasons to carry a steel water bottle is 1) in the eventuality that you find yourself in a survival situation or 2) you know that you will be obtaining water in the wild. In both of these cases, you will have to find a means of purifying the water. This brings me to another reason why a 38 oz. plus bottle is a poor choice. Namely, most water purification tablets and methods are based on a 1 quart (32 oz.) volume. Simply put, that means if you fill a 40 oz. bottle with water from a stream and drop in 32 oz.s worth of purification tabs, your really not getting all the purification you thought you were. Sure you can break up additional tablets and guesstimate how much more to add, but isn't that all a rather silly pursuit? All your doing is going through your limited supply of tablets faster then necessary and let's face it, the extra juice just isn't worth the squeeze. That's why I say that this bottle is just the right size, 32 oz. With it there is no need for concocting vague and wasteful purification potions. In the end, I see it there is one significant plus side to everyone's fascination with plus size water bottles. The greater the demand for those steel behemoths, the cheaper these practical bottles become. So keep on demanding those big heavy Papa Bear bottles for $25 each, and I'll keep snatching up these Goldilocks bottles for half that. Thanks and have a great hike... ... show more

  • Not disappointed but definitely needed cleaning
Size: 38 oz
You should always wash new containers and this one is no exception. As with many reviewers, I was trying to decide between this and the 40 oz Kleen Kanteen. Pricing is more consistent with the Kleen Kanteen but when the Nalgene was actually a dollar less I decided to go with this one. I'm glad I read several reviews that described the metallic smell and the interior weld seam. A little sandpaper fixed the seam and a lot of vinegar fixed the smell. And I mean a LOT. It's not the metal itself that's causing the taste/smell but the oils and deposits left over from manufacturing. A food grade acid, such as vinegar, can get in there and clean it out but you'll have to use more than you'd think. Just bite the bullet and fill up the container at least halfway with white vinegar. You can dilute it a little but I'd keep it fairly concentrated. Keep the bottle next to you throughout the day and keep shaking it and flipping it upside down every so often. The good part about the Nalgene is that it can stand on it's cap - not super sturdy but well enough to get that vinegar everywhere inside. Keep the vinegar in there all day, or at least several hours. Wash it again with a good bottle brush and dish soap and you should be good to go. If you're not satisfied with the results try it a second time. I do not recommend any industrial solvents - stick with food grade vinegar! So yes, one star off for having to sand down the weld seam. Although mine didn't look too bad. I still feel better about cleaning it up. ... show more

  • Nalgene Standard 38 oz Stainless Steel Bottle -
Size: 38 oz
Let me begin by saying that I thought long and hard about the differences between the Klean Kanteen 40 oz and this Nalgene 38 oz bottle. My kit is built around a Maxpedition 10 x 4 bottle carrier, so the bottle had to fit along with all my other "stuff". The KK is advertised at 9.9" tall, while the Nalgene is advertised at 8.5" tall. The Nalgene won because of it's height. My biggest concern was all of the negative feedback about the dirty weld seam under the top shoulder, but I believed I could "repair" this defect, so I pulled the trigger on the Nalgene. Here we go . . . CONTRY OF MANUFACTURE: The label clearly says "Made in China". DIRTY WELD SEAM: Yes, it had the ragged and blackened weld seam in the upper shoulder which deposited soot on a paper towel when wiped. The weld bead has been cleaned up as follows: I took a small piece of 100 grit sand paper and sanded the weld bead to remove the sharp peaks. I then smoothed it with a small wire brush wheel in my Dremel tool. After the weld had been smoothed up, I used lemon juice (a natural acid) and medium grit Scotch-Brite pad to clean the weld bead as well as possible. I then flushed the bottle for 10 minutes with cool running water. The weld looks much better, and does not deposit any dirt when wiped with a paper towel. (The I believe the slight darkness in my photo is shadow from indirect lighting) HEIGHT: The height is advertised at 8-1/2 (8.5) inches overall. My bottle measures 8-1/32 (8.034) inches overall, which is considerably shorter, but works to my advantage. I would also note that the 38 oz stainless bottle is .370 (3/8") shorter than the 32 oz Nalgene Tritan plastic bottle with the caps removed, despite being advertised as having a larger capacity. DIAMETER: The diameter measures an average of 3.645. It fits smoothly into an Olicamp Spacesaver cup. WEIGHT: This bottle weighs 385.8 grams which is considerably heavier than the KK's advertised weight of 274.9 grams. CAPACITY: Filled to the shoulder, is holds 1122 ml, or right at 38 ounces. CAP THREADS: The large thread and clean surfaces of the machined fitting on the top is a definite plus. These threads are a coarse pitch, deep, making them easy to open and close. The inside of the neck is smooth, and the edge seals tightly against the lid gasket with no leaks, even after vigorous shaking. The additional flange for the cap lanyard makes it easy to rope and lower this bottle into a water source. The down side of the hefty fitting is that is does add some weight. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. The design is good and the construction is solid using heavy duty materials. It should serve me well for a long time. However, I must subtract 2 stars for the unfinished and dirty weld bead in the upper shoulder. You shouldn't have to spend 2 hours reworking a brand new $30 bottle ! ... show more
