Although some consider it old school to ski with these (with cell phones being used instead), you never know when your phone will not work ie., no cellular data working, phone breaks down, battery dies, etc. I recently took a trip out West to ski with my grandson, and my phone literally broke (sim card issue) the day before we hit the slopes. It took two days to get the phone repaired, and without these walkie talkies I would've been very stressed as it's easy to separate on the mountain and difficult find each other at the bottom, especially since the runs branch off continually and you could end up in an entirely different area by the time you hit the base. Plus it was fun using them! We could make comments to each other while skiing. These are powerful and the battery lasted the entire day - no problem. Easy to charge, easy to operate and the best part is how compact they are. We clipped them right onto our backpacks shoulder straps (used small carabiners-didn't trust the little plastic things) so we could access them easily while skiing. I suggested to my daughter that she picks some up for when they go camping with the kids - very useful. SO glad I had them in Colorado when my phone stopped working!! ... show more

We got these walkie talkies for our sons, who are six and 8, to take with them when they play outside. Whether they are in the backyard or riding bikes out front they are perfect for keeping in touch and checking in. As far as specs, we live in a flat desert neighborhood full of homes, no tall buildings or big trees to mess with signal. The range on these seems to be about 2 miles with very clear audio, with about another mile until the transmission becomes too hard to understand. The controls are very simple and compact with a minimalistic design that fits easily in a child's pocket and comes with a nice secure clip. These are a wonderful entry level walkie, durable, very reliable over short distances and the battery is long lasting. I would recommend them for short-mid range as long as its not over 3 miles. ... show more

I use these for communication on rock climbs. They work great for communication and they are very lightweight compared to others. However, they are not very durable.

These work fairly well- of course coms get spotty when a mountain blocks transmission. But other than that, we get great distance & use them all the time. The rechargeable on-board batteries are great.

We use these skiing with our family, and can routinely communicate back to the condo as well as all over the mountain. Sometimes it’s a little static at extreme distances, but we are usually able to make out what’s important and almost always are able to send and receive communications With these radios. Seems like a good radio. None of these FRS's have much range in the city. Very lightweight yet seems sturdy enough. Just decided to get a GMS radio with an option for a long antenna which was a little bit clearer at the same range.
