  • Great Radio for the price
In my collection of ham radios, I have owned or currently own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. Among these, the TYT TH-9800D is my second TYT radio. I have only had it for a few hours, but it has already impressed me with its performance. The TYT TH-9800D has a solid build quality that does not appear cheap. It feels well-constructed and durable, giving me confidence in its longevity. I am optimistic that it will last for quite some time. The Chirp programming process went smoothly, although I occasionally need a reminder of how to access specific details in the Basic setup menu. It's usually quite straightforward, but sometimes it takes a moment to locate the desired setting. This radio is often considered a clone of the Yaesu FT-8900, but it comes at a more reasonable price point. It features good speaker audio, clean signal output, and a bright display. The overall appearance of the radio is aesthetically pleasing, although it lacks the ruggedized look of the Yaesu. One peculiar aspect of my purchase was that the box arrived without any tape or seals. This led me to suspect that it may have been opened previously or could be an open-box display unit from a store. Despite this, I am highly satisfied with my purchase and look forward to using the TYT TH-9800D for my amateur radio activities. ... show more

  • Very capable radio at a great price
I currently, or used to, own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. I think this is my second TYT. The TYT TH-9800D is performing very well but I've only had it for a few hours. It's not a cheap looking build and feels solid, so I expect it to last a while. (Knock on wood). The Chirp programming went well, though I always need to remember how to get to the finer details in Basic setup (which is usually staring me in the face). This is kind of a clone of a Yaesu FT-8900 at a reasonable price. The speaker sound is good, it has clean signal output, the display is bright, and it's a nice looking radio (it doesn't have quite the same ruggedized look of the Yaesu). One oddity, though... the box arrived without any tape or seal, so it may have been opened before or could be an open box display unit from somewhere. Quite happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • Software is for the wrong radio
Trying to install software… it’s a no go as the software was for every radio but this one. Will manually program… or maybe chirp, and keep trying to get software… I see it is available for purchase, but I already did, right? Will wait for response or send back….The radio itself seems fine, but what good is a 800 channel radio if you have to manually program? UPDATE: The radio sent was not the Plus… the only way to know is that there is a sticker on the radio (not the box) that it’s done, and the older one is buggy, and cannot do Chirp. New radio sent…. This time the software (disk) is blank! But the driver (https given) does work. Very easy to load everything on the radio from Chirp, and works very well…. Radio is great, reads 50w power as advertised, works from 11 meters to 1.25 meters, and will happily freeband so be careful. It says you can turn on or lock out band with the “software” if they make any. Zero support from TYT, I will keep trying to get the software, or maybe someone I know has a copy…. Could easily be a 5 star product, just be warned, glad I bought off Amazon as I got a replacement the day after I figured out what was wrong. ... show more

  • Has some quirks to it and scanning is slow.
This radio has some quirks to it. One, when it arrived there was a dent in to the top of it near the speaker. Some of the issues it had, I compared to someone else's radio and that radio had the same quirks, so I know it wasn't the damage from the product. When listening on one side of the radio, if you are scanning on the other, the audio will have weird noises generated from it. Little beeps and hisses and it makes the audio annoying to listen to. If you are not scanning, and try to change memory channels, the audio of the other side gets briefly interrupted. So if you are spinning the dial on the other side, the audio from the opposite side will stutter. Scanning can be pretty slow. I was used to an IC-2730a and it's scan speed is pretty fast, so this one seemed really slow to me. If you have more than 20 channels programmed and you are scanning them all, you may miss someone throwing their callsign out on a repeater. There is also no scan banks... So you can't put in 50 channels and have a couple of scan banks to cut the list down for scanning smaller lists on each side, or setting up scanning for certain situations. It's all or nothing unless you set up favorites. Favorites is just one list to scan. Long term, there are issues with this model burning out tx/rx audio on one side, or both. For a cheap radio to get you buy a couple years, it's good enough if you can't afford much. If you can afford another $100, you can get an Icom ic-2730a or an Alinco Dr-735T from other places with free shipping. Since I had bought this and new about long term issues, I got the 3 year extended warranty on it. I ended up returning this because of the dent and audio issues and getting an Alinco DR-735t from DX Engineering for only $75 more. ... show more

  • Failed after only using for less than two months
This is the second TYT TH-9800D with the first one dead on arrival and then was replaced and the second unit has failed after only two months of use. The have been several warning online regarding this unit from others whom have experienced similar issue with the radio. The radio was working fine and then it just stopped operating as specified. I reset the radio to the factory defaults and reprogrammed with the same results. The unit stopped receiving on the left channel and would continuously beep if any channel was set for any band other that the 2 meter amateur radio band. I can't recommend this radio to others as I have discovered that it is very common to experience these types of issues. ... show more
