  • Very capable radio at a great price
I currently, or used to, own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. I think this is my second TYT. The TYT TH-9800D is performing very well but I've only had it for a few hours. It's not a cheap looking build and feels solid, so I expect it to last a while. (Knock on wood). The Chirp programming went well, though I always need to remember how to get to the finer details in Basic setup (which is usually staring me in the face). This is kind of a clone of a Yaesu FT-8900 at a reasonable price. The speaker sound is good, it has clean signal output, the display is bright, and it's a nice looking radio (it doesn't have quite the same ruggedized look of the Yaesu). One oddity, though... the box arrived without any tape or seal, so it may have been opened before or could be an open box display unit from somewhere. Quite happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • Decent for the Money
Nice built quality and button and front key features. Arrives with FCC compliance for 2meter & 440 (70cm). These can be unlocked if you dare and the settings are only available with the Factory Software. Running Windows 10, software works fine. WARNING! There are 2 ways to unlock freqs like a Baofeng, but beware, if you use CHIRP, all settings will be missing if you do the MOD. I saved an image of the original Factory Software & options. Then imported radio and saved those settings first. Same with CHIRP, imported stock radio and saved dated image. Then tried the MOD and yup, no CHIRP settings. Resetting radio to factory WILL NOT REMOVE EXPANDED TXT FREQS. However, if you made backup first, just restore to the radio and it will put everything back where it should be, legal freqs and CHIRP settings available. Ran mine temp to 24amp power supply with cigarette plug wired on back as an experiment. Power settings on meter came in spot on except 1. Low 5watts, Mid2 10watts, Mid1 20watts exactly. High power @ 40watts which is decent for running thru 24amp supply wired to cig lighter adapter, then cig power supply to radio. Passed power test @ 100%. I have a friend who has one of these, always sounds excellent with stock mic. When you setup freqs, select MEDIUM on the narrow or wide band settings. This will give best sound with perfect clean output. Also like the 4 P buttons on Mic. You can program them in the Factory Software or Chirp. Great features that my Yaesu FT-8900R lack in options. Nice air flow from back heat sink and fan. Purchased 2nd one while available for basement. Running mine in bedroom with ladderline jpole dual band antenna on 5 watts hits repeaters in opposite direction loud and proud. Get the Asurion Protection Plan as this radio only has 3 mth warranty to CHINA! Update: Having problem figuring out the cross band repeater function. Seems to only work in VFO mode not with saved memory channels (simplex on left, repeater on right). ... show more

  • Some Problems...
This radio looks great! The receiver is super sensitive. I hear my local airport tower full scale when it is barely receivable on a scanner. The detachable head makes for easy mobile mounting. The menu allows choices for scanning, and you can build a list of preferred frequencies to scan. Now the bad news. I installed the radio and while driving, the radio shut itself off. It would not come back on for about 10 minutes. The next day, while talking to a friend on the local repeater, I released the PTT and heard the other fellow calling me. The radio had stopped transmitting. I thought maybe it got too hot, as it tends to run hot, so after a few minutes I was able to transmit. On a road trip a few days later, the radio turned itself on! I turned it off, and that was it. It would not come on for love or money. DEAD. Checked fuses and connections and all was ok. The radio died. It was returned to Amazon. I will buy another one just in case I got a lemon. We will see. It is a great little radio and does all it is supposed to do when it works. It is a roll of the dice! ... show more

  • Great Radio for the price
In my collection of ham radios, I have owned or currently own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. Among these, the TYT TH-9800D is my second TYT radio. I have only had it for a few hours, but it has already impressed me with its performance. The TYT TH-9800D has a solid build quality that does not appear cheap. It feels well-constructed and durable, giving me confidence in its longevity. I am optimistic that it will last for quite some time. The Chirp programming process went smoothly, although I occasionally need a reminder of how to access specific details in the Basic setup menu. It's usually quite straightforward, but sometimes it takes a moment to locate the desired setting. This radio is often considered a clone of the Yaesu FT-8900, but it comes at a more reasonable price point. It features good speaker audio, clean signal output, and a bright display. The overall appearance of the radio is aesthetically pleasing, although it lacks the ruggedized look of the Yaesu. One peculiar aspect of my purchase was that the box arrived without any tape or seals. This led me to suspect that it may have been opened previously or could be an open-box display unit from a store. Despite this, I am highly satisfied with my purchase and look forward to using the TYT TH-9800D for my amateur radio activities. ... show more

  • I love this radio
I love it! Nice radio for the money. I noticed there are some issues from other people's reviews online. We will see... Good power output and very nice features. It is a good looking and good sounding radio. Nice copy of the iCom version. I will continue this review after some use.

Got the radio installed it and programmed a frequency and it only transmitted the carrier signal but no audio so I ordered another mic after seeing that the customer service for this seller was useless but other than that it works great as RX and sounds good just wish I could transmit on my new radio ... show more
