Used them on an old cummins on my boat that had tachometer drives. (Didn't hook to the alternator). Setting was very close at install just a minor tweak and locked in.

We replaced the engine on an old tractor, and the replacement engine did not have a tach drive on it. So, we got this one, which works by connecting to the alternator. The alternator already had the 3rd terminal on it, so all we had to do, was make the connections. One wire to power, one to ground, and a signal wire to the 3rd spade on the alternator. The directions were a little sketchy, but were good enough to get it hooked up. Included in the box, is a little tool you use to calibrate the gauge. This leads to my only real quibble with the tach. Calibration is straight forward, but the calibration adjustment is very touchy. It took me a few tries to get it just right because it was easy to overshoot the proper setting because the tiniest bit of movement made a big difference in the displayed RPMs. However, once I got it properly calibrated, it works very, very smoothly, and so far, has stayed in calibration. ... show more

i removed plastic fan shroud on my briggs and stratton added one awg 12 wire with ring crimp connector and attached it to one of the two magneto screws and i was able to get a pulse signal to tachometer i re adjusted tachometer calibration with supplied plastic tool .i compared it to photo tachometer with reflective tape on flywheel so far pretty accurate ... show more

The media could not be loaded. This was the only tach I could find that went to 4k rpm and was compatible with a single cylinder motor. Needed this for lawn mower build. Looks cool and works great. Calibration is key.

The main problem I had is after a short time it quit reading the w- wire on the alternator so I had to use CPS sensor.

Very nice in appearance, easy to install once figured out where to hook alternator wire. The rpm needle is very stable while tractor is running. Dropped one star due to instructions not stating what direction to rotate the pot to adjust rpm reading. When I first started the tractor the needle pegged, so shut down immediately as not to damage instrument. Then had to guess which way to turn the adjustment before restarting. Got lucky. FYI as viewing back of tach, rotate pot clockwise to lower rpm reading. Once adjusted tach has been working well. ... show more

Worked like a charm on my old 6.9 ford diesel. My 85 didn't come with a factory tach so getting this worked great hardest part was attaching the signal wire to the alternator.
