Description

A bestiary of wondrous friends and foes for the world’s greatest roleplaying game Sparkling with the musings of the wizard Mordenkainen, this tome features a host of creatures for use in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Compiling and updating monsters that originally appeared in previous D&D fifth edition releases, these creatures represent some of the most benevolent and malevolent forces that D&D heroes might face. The book also gathers together fantastical peoples from many different worlds. Each of these peoples represents a race option when you create your D&D character, expanding on the choices in the Player’s Handbook. Includes more than 250 monsters—updates to the monsters include making spellcasters easier for Dungeon Masters to run, giving many monsters more damage and resilience, and improving the organization of the stat blocks themselvesIncludes more than 30 playable races—brings the game’s setting-agnostic races into one book, complementing the races in the Player’s HandbookA multiverse of lore—includes updates to monster lore that refocuses their stories on the D&D multiverse, rather than on any particular world. The races presented are great. So are the monsters. You can now be a ninja turtle. There’s bunnies and kitties too. I am happy to see the derro return. Best sourcebook ever!

  • Useful by largely redundant
Style: Physical Book
This is basically a reprint of Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's tome of Foes, with most of the lore removed. It is what it says it is, but many of the entries are for "orphans" from some random setting (Giff, Star Spawn), or worse, are are NPC statblocks from the back of other books. The organization is fairly weak, with little topical order. ... show more

A great book full of new playable and non-playable races for both player and DM to expand the world of their campaigns. Highly recommend this for anyone looking to try something new in D&D

  • Best 5e Monster Book WotC has put out since the MM
Style: Physical Book
If you don't have Volo's Guide or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, this book is absolutely a better deal than either one and probably worth buying even if you already have one of the two. This tome has largest collected line-up of monsters that WotC has put out since the Monster Manual with, making it a better reference for DMs who don't want to lug around extra books. Having a huge collection of rebalanced PC races is just icing on the cake, with some options like the Genasi and Hobgoblin getting a much needed boost while some with slightly over-tuned power sets like the aasimar (+level to damage for a minute) and yuan-ti got balanced out just a bit. It also pulls in races that were buried in disparate books, like the harengon and tortle, and puts them in one easy-to-access spot. The one star reviews this is getting are pretty disingenuous. People didn't seem to have a problem with VGtM or MToF when they released, but suddenly they're upset when this book comes out that collects the same monsters in one place. If you have all of the content in book spread around on your bookshelf in other sources, it may not be worth it for the updates. If you're missing some of the earlier books or just like to have everything in one resource, this one is a great buy. ... show more

  • Great! (If you don't have MToF and/or VGtM)
Style: Physical Book
Lots of people are complaining that this book was just a cash grab from wizards of the coast (which it probably was), but has someone who was only missing MToF and VGtM to complete the core and expanded rules, having them compiled into one book is a dream! If you have MToF and VGtM, you will probably be very disappointed if you get this book, unless needed one less book in your arsenal is that appealing to you (definitely valid). If you expect to get new things--you won't. This book is described as a compilation of those two already published books. However... if like me you don't have either of them: this is a wonderful opportunity to get the content from those two books in one (and save yourself some money)! If you have one of the two books which this compiles: just buy the other if you want a more complete book and more lore (I know that MotM cuts out a bunch of DnD lore from VGtM and just keeps the stat blocks--I'm sure it's similar with MToF) than just get the other book; and if you want to save space and just have one book then get this and gift the book you already have or something. ... show more
