  • A Worthy Sequel
Blackstone is an example of a sequel done right. I deeply enjoyed Deepwoods and was very much looking forward to this sequel, I was not disappointed. There is a continuation in this series, not only in the development of the plot but in the development of the characters. I love how the events in the first book have consequences in book 2. The world which has not seen war in over 200 years is now at the brink of it, and who can help? Our favorite guild of course. This is a book that is made so much sweeter by the great foundation laid in Deepwoods. In this book Honor Raconteur is doing what she does best, characters. I love the sense of family among this cast of characters. It was the characters that made the book a pure joy to read. This is one of those books where you wish you could live inside the world and meet them face to face because they feel so real. You see them grow, you see their fears and cheer for them to succeed. In writing it is difficult enough to write good, believable, enjoyable character interaction with 2 or 3 characters, let alone 6+. Yet Honor seems to do it in this book with such ease. On top of a solid sequel you also get a "short" Wolf backstory which is novella in itself. I would have paid the $5 dollars for that by itself. But getting both together for that price is great! Story telling at it's finest. If you loved the first one you will love this. ... show more

  • A Solid Second Book
Good young adult fantasy novel, but will only make sense if you have read the first book in the series "Deepwoods". Some new players are added to the mix with good results but war and strategy are not the strong suite for Honor. I understand this is young adult but war is hard to describe without having any deaths, even if one of the main characters has to do it. Sorry, Honor, but when an army is attacking your city and a soldier is attacking you with a fire brand, you don't just knock him out. Still, this is a good second book and is obviously setting up the third book in the set. There is still work to be done, and some interesting pairings to work out with the main characters. If you liked "Deepwoods" then you should buy and read this one. ... show more

  • If You Would Just Listen!
Deepwoods2 This is a quieter series by this author. Even though there is a glimpse of danger on the horizon, only Deepwoods guild sees it clearly. Seeking permission to travel to gain more knowledge, Marley takes her guild to the country that kept the knowledge and history of war alive. The beauty of the mountains and valleys is only offset, by the information they exchange with each other. As her guild members learn how to fight as a team, blending their techniques, they are also attracting the help they need. But, it proves too late to fully stave off disaster. But, they have the skills to get out warnings and shape the mindset of those defending their homes. They just need to understand the endgame. ... show more

  • A fine telling
The ramp up to the battles were cinched with tension but paid off well with the end results. Pacing was good. I enjoyed the short story involving Wolf.

  • Nice read
The story of our guild leader gathering broken people into her flock for healing and redemption. From this author, I expected a good story and it was delivered. The last section on Wolfe didn't seem to break any new ground for readers of both books in the series. The worst part of the book is the character art. The cover picture has the look of a photoshopped picture of a GI Joe character holding a sword. It reminded me of a wax figure without details, the arm holding the sword seems to be a beige cylinder without defined musculature. I will admit that cover art does sway my purchasing decisions. So look beyond the cover for a nice story. ... show more

  • A great addition to the series!
I really enjoy the teamwork written about in this story and the struggles and growth each character has gone through or is going through in the story. The story telling both by the characters and in the book itself is mesmerizing and such a fun way to spend my time!

Deepwoods was an excellent and unusual fantasy - Blackstone continues this story with a good bit of it coming from Wolf's perspective. The characters and their motivations are explored and expanded, and the plot is well thought out and well done. I would like to see a 3rd book!
