Features

  • 10inch (ID) x 12.5inch(H) -- split logs up to 9-1/2-inches in diameter because the inner diameter of safety ring is 9inch. Anything bigger needs an axe to depart it first or it will get stuck in the top ring.
  • CUT LIKE A BUTTER KNIFE -- the blade is made of HRC30 45# steel with a sharpened edge, solid material with the reverse wedge on the side which means splits wood effectively using less force than a standard axe, made it easier than using an ax or hatchet.
  • BUILT LIKE A TANK -- the main body is made of rock-solid carbon steel with a paint-coated rust-resistance surface, one piece welded with no screws to come loose. With the ring guard design, the hammer never hits the blade or your feet and keeps things contained safely so pieces parts don't fly off flying into your shins.
  • WEIGHT OF 16lb MAKES IT STABLE -- never worried about tipping over, it weighs up to 16 pounds. But we still recommend mounting it on a solid surface that's why it comes with bolt holes for permanent mounting.
  • 4lb 45# STEEL HAMMER -- hardened, drop-forged steel head attached to a steel handle with a non-slip cushion grip for comfort. works really well pushing the log down the middle which act as the pivot that does the splitting.
  • ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS -- this tool works best on straight-grained and adequately dried logs. Fresh-cut wet logs will take 10-15 strikes to split is a bit of a challenge.

  • Good for light/medium use and well-seasoned wood
This splitter kit is pretty good for making smaller chunks of firewood from sections that have been seasoned and are pretty dry. At first, I thought I could use this with a larger sledgehammer to split greener wood but quickly decided against it as the larger head could make contact with the blade. I think the ideal way to use this is to bolt it in place and use the include hammer or similar sized sledge to drive the pieces against the blade safely. Due to the additional wedges lining the sides of the wedge, logs split easily and quickly once started. This can turn an 8" round into usable firewood in a matter of minutes and with reasonable effort. ... show more

  • It take a good whack, but it works.
I was amazed that this thing arrived in one piece. The hammer, a 4lb mini sledge, was just lightly wrapped in bubble and otherwise free to bounce around. However, it made it and seemed to look undamaged. I did not mount it, though there are holes to do so. I just took some seasoned oak from the stack and started playing with this. The blade is sharp enough. Sharper that a splitting wedge, not as sharp as an axe. The spreader teeth, that open the cut, are perhaps a bit steep. Then tended to bind more than spread a fledgling cut. There is a bit of a learning curve and I figured out shaving off 1 inch strips, making sure to orient the piece to the grain, was actually pretty easy. So you can turn one standard fire log into a pile of smaller starter pieces in just a few aerobic minutes. It would not deal with knots or bends, so a true log will be easier. I wound up breaking down three or four pieces and stacking them next to the pile. I am curious about green wood, I did not try that. I will also say that the distance from the top of the blade to the ground may limit the length of wood you can effectively fully split. I had a piece that hit the ground before it surrendered and had to pull it out and turn it over. The device seems well painted, the hammer, not so much. I predict rust in short order and the rubber handle will dry out. So, I will simply use the back of the axe once it starts to fail. ... show more

  • Makes you feel like Paul Bunyan
The log splitter is great. It works well and feels solid. I wasn't scared to hit logs with a hammer on it for fear of it breaking. The blade isn't razor sharp, but it is sharp enough to get the job done, and get it done efficiently. "Extra" wedges are welded onto the sides of the blade. As the log is pushed down the wedges help split the log. The base is a nice flat ring. There are two holes in it, one on each side. I will mount this on a large log or on top of a glued and screwed together Jenga tower of 4x4s. The hammer... well, it IS a hammer and it does knock the smaller logs with some semblance of power. I did get the small sledge, and it worked better. I wouldn't get a BIG hammer because: A. The log might split easily allowing the hammer to hit the upper ring and bend it. and B. The log might split easily allowing the hammer to hit the upper ring and break your handle. So the hammer, yeah, it's decent enough to get the job done and seems to be well made. The log splitter seems sturdy, has mounting holes in the bottom ring, and the blade is built to last a long time. I wouldn't use it to split a cord's worth of logs, but I'd use it for smaller logs, making kindling, and chopping up small logs for the wood fire heated hot tub. It is perfect for that. Oh, and one other thing... it sounds like you're ringing a big bell with every blow. ... show more

  • No hardware and cheap hammer
Overall, the splitter portion is good, but this will only last as long as the welds do. It did not come with hardware and the hammer is cheap as the gap for the handle is tighter one one side and loose on the other.

  • Substantially well made.
This isn't going to take the place of a full-blown log splitter that you can make larger splits out of. The depth overall is 13", so unless you have a log that will not voluntarily split all the way through when subjected to the wedge, like elm does, then you will need a larger splitter to get the job done. Most wood splits all the way through quite readily, so in that case, yes you can use this to make 16" splits. The overall sizing is 13" tall, the metal rounds that make up the framework is solid 3/8" thick steel. The base is designed to be bolted down on something. I have a tree that was recently removed, an old maple I planted as a child and I can secure it to that. You can place this on a solid surface without bolting it down, but it would not be as secure as when bolted. The mouth opening is 9" so a cut round cannot be larger than that. However, if you have a splitter for larger rounds, you can reduce them to let's say an 8" split, and put that through this for the purpose of making starter logs. The hammer is heavy enough to do the job, or if you have a really tough log, it is sufficient to get the split started, and then you can use a heavier hammer, a sledge let's say to finish the job. This is great for night time backyard fires where you don't want to make a roaring fire, or you have one of those smaller fire box containers that for the most part demand wood smaller than 16", or let’s say 14" or smaller in length. I was shocked at how heavy this was overall. When the box arrived and I lifted it my immediate thought was, "Woah, what is this?" I have to give it 5 stars for what it is, and does the job it was designed for superbly. ... show more
