  • Kindling Splitter — Great Performance
This product is displayed and described clearly and accurately. The price point is reasonable. It arrived ahead of schedule and performed most excellently. Tried both a wooden mallet and 4lb. stone maul on a variety of types of wood. Despite Elm being a stringy wood, the splitter worked well. On two types of maple, poplar, cedar and black walnut it worked great. 30-40 minutes of leisurely labour produced about 6-7 cu. ft. of kindling; including set up, and picking through my wood pile for the different types of wood to test. ... show more

  • Easy to use
I have it secured to an old stump in the pole barn. I split wood for kindling for my wood stove. I'm 81 year old lady. I use this several times a week. Very easy to use.

  • WAY BETTER THAN SPLITTING MAUL
Better and safer than splitting maul. Helps get the whole family involved. Rather bulky for traveling but size isn’t to large. Maybe slightly slower than using maul. Finish seems to hold up well but has chipped some black paint away with use. To be expected Product works well for someone who isn’t a professional wood splitter. Seems to be a quality piece of equipment ... show more

  • Great purchase!
So much safer than swinging an ax and faster than splitting wood with an ax!

  • so much better than a hatchet.
3lb mallet and large firewood = great little kindling! so much safer than swinging a hatchet. no brainer for safety reasons.

  • A 58 year old woman can use it!
I just tested this out and it worked well on a piece of partially aged birch. (After I removed the safety guard that it was shipped with!) Hardest part was holding the wood while whacking it. I used an axe and I need to use a maul with a shorter handle. We will see (too soon) how it holds up to -40 in Alaska... ... show more

  • This thing is awesome
This is sturdy, well made, one piece, will probably last forever thing. The blade is sharp, the size is great for those somewhat larger logs. The price is a bargain.

  • It works well. Be patient, watch some videos on using it
Once you get the hang of this thing, it works really well. There are reviews saying it doesn't work but I swear it's just that they haven't figured out how to best go about it yet (or are trying to split wood that's too large). I recommend watching a couple youtubes of people using it, because there are some good tips on using it right. I used mine for the first time a week or so ago, went through about 3 wheel barrows of logs that were roughly 10 inches across and split them into pieces that were 3-4 inches across - had a blast. Here are the tips I'd pass on: 1) This works best when secured to a stump or something. That it stays stationary when you whack at the wood is pretty important to it working well (and safely). The holes to attach it are pretty wide though, so get some nice 5/6 x 4, 5 or 6 hex nut screws and wasahers and use a drill with a hex bit to drill them in. 2) The circumference of this thing is pretty big. I'm glad that I know I can fit almost any piece of wood in there, but any hero who is going to put a log the full diameter in there and think it'll split, is likely fooling him/herself. I found this worked best splitting logs that were about 10 inches or less in diameter, and also worked best if I kept a small log in the splitter at all times and rested the pieces I was cutting against it. 3) You should try to stick to pieces that aren't much taller than the unit itself, otherwise you risk getting pieces stuck because they don't split all the way through before they get stopped by the ground/stump 4) You should use a small sledge hammer just to tap start the piece onto the blade but then step back and use a large sledge to split it. Good to keep a small hatchet handy as well as some pieces will split most of the way but need to be finished with an small axe 5) Listen to heavy metal music while you split. Trust me, even if you're someone who thinks metal only has a certain time and place, this is that time. 6) Someone recommended this in a video I saw and I agree - it's best if you position the wood where one side is sorta flush against the inside of the splitter (i.e. rather than centering the wood on the blade, you cut on one side of the blade). 7) Try to split with the grain 8) Buy a sharpening file or stone (the makers of this thing are missing a big extra revenue opportunity by not selling separately both the hardware to mount it to a stump and a sharpener). Again, mine is pretty new so it's plenty sharp now, but keeping it sharp for each use is definitely gonna be key for smooth splitting Have fun! ... show more
