    • you must have a rotating yarn swift in order to use this
I considered giving this machine the lowest rating as a result of my experience with it today, but I expect it was built to be used with a rotating swift and as such probably is working mostly as expected. It does not feel like beginner tool or if it is, it does not have the correct instructions on how to set this up for the beginner unwinding a skein of yarn. I am a seasoned knitter/crochet and fiber artist but I have never used or really wanted to use a yarn winder. Sometimes I get very fatigued balling my own yarn, so I figured I would try this. So I am technically a beginner at using a yarn winder. My problems with it is that I cannot pull yarn from a skein cleanly unless the yarn is coming from something like a rotating swift and I did not see any instructions about that or alternative recommendations for workarounds if you did not own something like that. I tried a chair upside down and then draping it over the top of a chair loosely and then the top of my table with no restrictions. When the yarn was on the chair legs, the winder fell of the counter and kept winding even when disassembled. When the yarn was on the chair back, the winder pulled the whole skein up and completely tangled the skein so that it is now in knots and will take me an hour to untangle. I have tried to wind a little bit with the remaining tangled skein on my table top while manually feeding the yarn into the winder and that is the best it can handle but I still don't really care for this machine. My second issue with this is that the unit defaults to a very high speed it is calling Medium. You cannot turn this machine on directly at low speed. You must start it at Medium speed and then turn it down to Slow which in my opinion is still quite fast. If you try to slowly feed the yarn in with your hand then most of the time the machine will stop and read this as an obstruction, even as it is starting up. The cake it is winding is quite compact and tight and the product page indicates this is a positive thing, but I think it is a negative and I would consider it a discouragement from using my natural wool type yarns with this, especially if I do not plan on using the yarn immediately. I do not cake my yarn at yarn shops or when ordering online as I personally do not think it is good to stretch out the yarn for long periods of time before knitting or crocheting them. If this worked for me or saved me a lot of time I might reconsider, but so far it just tangled up my test yarn. ... show more

    • Excellent Quality And Easy To Use
This yarn winder is well made from plastic. It appears durable and rugged. The item is plug and play ready. It has three speeds from which to choose. It can be easily fixed to a table top. My wife has really gotten into knitting and has the large spindle hand crank version. But she also loves this little electric one, since she can leave it sitting out, and it won't be in the way. This little unit does a great job and is capable of winding yarn balls in a variety of sizes. The item is as described. I am very pleased with this product, and believe you will be as well.
