  • Works wonderful

What’s not to like with this little gem. It works perfectly. Love how quick and neat it winds the yarn. It’s truly a time saver. You won’t regret purchasing this yarn winder.

  • Definitely preferable to hand-winding, but I will look for a more powerful unit
Color: Electric Drive/Purple
So first, I have no idea how loose/tight yarn cakes are supposed to be. I know when I hand-roll balls, they are fairly tight (not tight enough to stretch the yarn, but you can throw one into the air without it coming apart). The cakes that are produced on this seem kinda loose; I have to handle them gently so that they don't start falling apart. Also, the rubber band doesn't always keep the yarn confined to where it's supposed to be, so sometimes the cakes are taller than I wanted them to be. The motor is not very strong. I've gotten a fairly large cake of worsted weight acrylic done with it, but it did require a bit of stopping and starting, as any bit of tension will stop it. And by "any bit of tension" I mean that if you have a ball of yarn being unwound from the outside, the ball rolling around is enough to make this winder stop. There is a little piece on a string that is meant to hold the yarn string in place and tension it, but this piece seems extremely fragile. It also sometimes slips off somehow, resulting in lose tension, which can cause the yarn to wrap around underneath the spindle, instead of on the spinning spindle. This unit needs to be closely monitored to make sure that it doesn't just stop from minor tension, and to make sure the tension piece doesn't pop off and cause a mess of tangled yarn on the spindle. This unit is okay for lighter-weight yarns and smaller amounts. It does not handle thick yarn or larger cakes well. I'd say that the motor will max out at about 6oz, which is about the size of a cheap skein of worsted weight acrylic. ... show more

  • Junk.
You'd be better off winding by hand. This is just junk and didn't work. I was able to get the yarn to wind, but the motor is very underpowered and the result is loose balls of yarn. Waste of money.

  • Fantastic with All Kinds of Yarn
Color: Electric Drive/Purple
So I decided to sell all my excess yarn from projects over the years (yes, reclaimed yarn is a thing) and this winder made a huge difference. I was able to wind all kinds of different designer yarns, fine fur yarns, fine mohair, and chunky yarn and they all made nicely wound 50g skeins. This says it is only meant for thinner yarns, but the trick with the thicker, chunky yarns is to use your hands to control the yarn feed instead of hooking the yarn through the metal feeder. Using my hands as the yarn feeder, I didn't find a yarn that I couldn't wind. Works fantastic and super easy to use. Well worth it. ... show more

  • Literal trash
Color: Electric Drive/Purple
I tried a different electric ball winder before trying this one. The first one died, and I had hopes that this one would be okay. Nope. This one is literal trash. No matter where I placed the elastic band on the shaft, the machine spat the yarn over the entire length, rather than stayed put. I had a really ugly yarn egg as a result. On top of that, "low" mode spun WAY TOO FAST. That in turn put way too much energy into what yarn did get onto the yarn egg. Honestly, your best bet if you're serious about getting yarn with good, even tension into yarn cakes is just have your local yarn shop wind for you by hand or if they have one, a professional level winder. These low-end ones get their money off of the high hopes we fiber artists have for less time spent hand-cranking. Yet, it is hand-cranking (or having said yarn shops do it for us) which makes for the best tension when knitting. The yarn won't break on you if you cake it up by hand on a typical hand-turned ball winder, compared to with these electric machines. This is just not worth it, y'all. Pass on it. ... show more

  • you must have a rotating yarn swift in order to use this
I considered giving this machine the lowest rating as a result of my experience with it today, but I expect it was built to be used with a rotating swift and as such probably is working mostly as expected. It does not feel like beginner tool or if it is, it does not have the correct instructions on how to set this up for the beginner unwinding a skein of yarn. I am a seasoned knitter/crochet and fiber artist but I have never used or really wanted to use a yarn winder. Sometimes I get very fatigued balling my own yarn, so I figured I would try this. So I am technically a beginner at using a yarn winder. My problems with it is that I cannot pull yarn from a skein cleanly unless the yarn is coming from something like a rotating swift and I did not see any instructions about that or alternative recommendations for workarounds if you did not own something like that. I tried a chair upside down and then draping it over the top of a chair loosely and then the top of my table with no restrictions. When the yarn was on the chair legs, the winder fell of the counter and kept winding even when disassembled. When the yarn was on the chair back, the winder pulled the whole skein up and completely tangled the skein so that it is now in knots and will take me an hour to untangle. I have tried to wind a little bit with the remaining tangled skein on my table top while manually feeding the yarn into the winder and that is the best it can handle but I still don't really care for this machine. My second issue with this is that the unit defaults to a very high speed it is calling Medium. You cannot turn this machine on directly at low speed. You must start it at Medium speed and then turn it down to Slow which in my opinion is still quite fast. If you try to slowly feed the yarn in with your hand then most of the time the machine will stop and read this as an obstruction, even as it is starting up. The cake it is winding is quite compact and tight and the product page indicates this is a positive thing, but I think it is a negative and I would consider it a discouragement from using my natural wool type yarns with this, especially if I do not plan on using the yarn immediately. I do not cake my yarn at yarn shops or when ordering online as I personally do not think it is good to stretch out the yarn for long periods of time before knitting or crocheting them. If this worked for me or saved me a lot of time I might reconsider, but so far it just tangled up my test yarn. ... show more
