First impression: This is a higher-end unit than the price suggests. A good friend does a lot of metal detecting and uses units that cost 10x this. I showed it to him to get his opinion and he said "honestly, this is a pretty good unit for locating coins, jewelry, or cans" which is good enough for me. I found it pretty easy to use after running through the instructions to understand what all the beeps and LCD info was for. Unboxing to assembly to having fun in the yard was about 10 mins. I even found a nail buried in the first few mins of being out there! (Too bad it wasn't a silver coin lol) The headphones are fairly uncomfortable but do function. Thankfully, it's a standard 3.5mm plug so any standard headset works just fine. After tinkering for about 10-15 more mins, I had it figured out, could adjust the sensitivity, and even figured out how to use the precise locator. At first my friend said to buy a separate device for precise locating, but after tinkering with this and practicing when I could SEE the item, even he said this would work well enough. Super stoked to join him in some playgrounds and see what I can find. I grabbed some rechargeable 9v batteries as well (Lithium Ion) for on the go power without concerns, but the included ones didn't even show an ounce of loss after 30 mins of use. I first learned to use a metal detector about 30 years ago, as part of my training on the local search and rescue team. I've spent more hours than I'd like to think about going over and over the same patch of woods looking for things Amazon probably won't let me name and smelling things I'd rather not remember. The metal detectors back then were purely analog. You had oscillator and filter controls and the tone that was produced was a direct product of the disturbance of the search coil's magnetic field. We think of digital devices as being better, but it's that analog sensitivity that I miss with this detector. It does its best to try to interpret depth and composition but I'm not impressed so far with its accuracy at that. It does beep in its normal search mode when you pass over something but it's really just an alert tone to tell you to look at the screen more than a reflection of what it's detecting. There's not much connection between the noise it makes and the strength of detection. When you put it into pinpoint mode, it behaves much more like a traditional metal detector and you can get a better feel for the object's position relative to the search coil. It's still not as nuanced as an analog detector, though. The human brain really is an excellent signal processor and you can learn to extract a lot of information from the sound of an analog detector, but this thing strips most of that away and you're just left with some beeps. I finally got a chance to give this thing a real test today and spent some time going over a patch of ground out in the countryside where there wasn't likely to be a lot of clutter. I got a clear indication of something and had to dig through about 6-8" of rock-hard soil to find an old nail. Not an exciting find, but it did confirm the detector's abilities. It's certainly better than a kid's toy, but it's not something I'd rely on for an evidence search - I'd take the old, dumb kind for that. ... show more

I got this to help find property pin markers in the yard. It was able to find them, along with some service lines I did not know about, pretty well. The bonus survival shovel is also pretty nice to have. For the price, it performs very well, and it is cheaper than some of my local stores. I do recommend this metal detector! ... show more

    • Better than I expected.
I've wanted a metal detector for about fifty years. I'm not sure why I never got around to getting one, but now I finally have one. I have to say, I wasn't expecting much from this detector, considering the low price. I'm happy to say that I've been pleasantly surprised. This is a nice beginners package for the money. There is a lot of plastic here. The upper blue part with the arm strap does feel a little toy-like. It does, however, do what it's intended to do. Again, at this price point you shouldn't expect a high end unit. The most important thing is if it gets the job done. The detector has a lot of features. One of which is identifying what type of object you may have located. This detector does appear to do a good job of locating and identifying objects. I tried it with different coins, and it did do a pretty good job of identifying type of coin. The code that appears on the screen did jump around a bit, but it ultimately correctly identified the object about 80% of the time. Mind you, I don't claim to have done controlled scientific testing here. I'm just playing around with the detector. It alerts you with a sound when it detects something. Thankfully, there's a volume control, because it can be pretty loud at the higher settings. There are a lot of other functions, but you really have to read the manual to figure them all out. The manual is quite good. Something I definitely don't expect with Chinese made products. The detector comes with pretty much everything you need to get going right out of the box. This includes a nice shovel, a pair of headphones, a bag and two nine volt batteries. The detector is also easy to move around and store, largely thanks to the collapsible telescoping pole. I don't know how this unit stacks up to other detectors. You might be able to find one with similar features at a lower price if you shop around. All I can say is, I like this thing and I'm having fun using it. ... show more
