  • Outstanding little tiller
I use this for reseeding grass, prepping the garden for winter and in the woods seeding native plants. In all situations it performs like a champ. Energy efficient, I get more than a couple hours of use. Nice and light. Assembly is easy.

  • Batteries and Charger adds $200
The media could not be loaded. After I bought and then charged the two batteries needed then I got to use tiller. The full charge only covered half my job. Then I had to wait 80 mins to charge both batteries. It performed very well but having to stop and recharge was a drag. I would buy electric the next time since I already have enough cord! ... show more

  • Finally, a 36v cultivator, no more bad gas!
I ended up buying a 2 cycle gasoline cultivator a few months ago which also meant buying the very expensive premix in a can. This has kept the machine running well but its messy and still needs to be drained and run until it shuts down to prevent the tiny little carbs in these things from gumming up. Now, compare that to the Mellif cultivator. I took my two fully charged 6Ah genuine dewalt XR batteries and popped them in. They just barely fit so I would say these are the largest batteries you can fit dimension wise. Its possible you might be able to get larger capacity batteries if you can find them in a powerstack variation. The tine speed is not very fast but there is plenty of torque for a cultivator. This won't be able to break up grassy or compacted soils but will be able to bust up larger clumps into smaller bits (provided there isn't too much wet clay) or should be able to keep tilled rows cultivated. Unfortunately I have been able to determine its total runtime as my garden is mostly planted so had to test it in isolated areas and in the compose bin. The motor was strong enough to wrap several vines around its tines without slowing down or showing any hesitation. Removing the wound up tines was no more difficult than with other cultivators. As another test, I left the cultivator outside in the weather for 6wks including in several downpours (WITHOUT THE BATTERIES INSTALLED, they are too expensive to risk). This I am sure is not recommended but would represent the oops shower or two when its gets left inadvertently outside. There was no issue at all, just popped in the batteries and off it took. So much nicer than having to deal with a gas one that got water in the gas and now has to be completed disassembled and dried out before it will start. The unit seems well constructed and given that this isn't the only dewalt compatible tool I have from Mellif, I am glad to see that the quality continues. Assembly was very straightforward and intuitive. The handle knobs are even constructed of glass fiber reinforced plastic (same kind used in name brand cordless drills) and I appreciated the notches in the knobs that act like locknuts to prevent them coming loose while operating. The ONLY complaint I have with this unit is that the power cord that goes from the handle to the motor case cannot be disconnected. Its just a two conductor power cord so technically you could add one but if it came that way, it would make storage so much easier. ... show more

  • It actually digs
Gotta be honest, I had my doubts. A tiller that runs on drill/driver batteries and boasts plastic housing? So when I put my Dewalt batteries in and took it for a spin, I was honestly shocked that it tore into drought-dried chunks of yard and kept on going. I mean, it actually started digging down into the hard ground. The batteries lasted about as long as I'd expect for a tool using drill/driver batteries. The tiller's biggest Achilles Heel is its weight (or lack thereof). For a tiller to really do its job, it really needs that weight to help the tines dig in. This tiller is extremely lightweight for a gardening tool. The metal is light, and the rest is plastic. With no large gasoline engine as weight, this tiller really relies on the user to provide the heft. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for electric tools (I love my electric battery push mower), but this tiller needs more built-in weight. ... show more

  • Better than expected!
I have DeWalt 20V max 5AH batteries, so I can't say how it does with other batteries. I also have a lot of clay in the ground. When I ordered this I figured it could help get the dirt loose but would likely struggle some since it is battery powered and the ground is hard, but better than by hand. Well I was pleasantly surprised! This thing tore thru the ground with no problem. I have not tried to get 8 inches deep with it yet, but it digs down to around 4 inches with no issue. I was also happy with how long it runs. Used it on and off all day and batteries still showing it had more power (probably 2 hours of continuous use). Small roots it has no problem going thru, big roots will stop it or make it jump in the air. It really is quite powerful. Now, is it as strong as a gas powered version? No, of course not. But it is just as powerful as an electric corded one. So depending on what you need it for, this is a great option! Trying to make a huge acre sized garden? Get a gas powered one. Need help with a normal sized garden or flower beds? This is amazing. ... show more
