  • The Little Tiller That Can!
Style: Cultivator
I must say I am impressed. Researched many tiller models, some mini and some not-so-mini. Settled on this Mantis after surveying reviews here and elsewhere. What a delightful little machine. The money and time it has saved allowing me to do the project I had paid for itself a couple times over. In spite of its relatively lightweight status (24lbs I think?), it did a surprisingly good job of digging into the heavily compacted dirt and clay in my yard. Doubly so because of roots I asked it to go through, leftover from the four trees we cut down. I do have a few recommendations for getting the most out of it: (1) Make liberal use of the ability to easily reverse the blades back and forth from “cultivating mode” into “tilling mode.” The cultivator mode made a HUGE difference in being able to cut through tree and plant roots without tangling and/or jamming every few seconds. Once the roots and plants are well dealt with, a quick return to the more aggressive tiller mode churns more deeply in very short order. NOTE: this also reduces the amount of bouncing that seemed to irritate some other reviewers. And me. :-) (2) Take your time and let it do its thing. Some want to make a single quick pass and then wonder why it only takes off an inch or so of the hard compacted top layer. Remember that it is, after all, a MINI tiller. Give it a moment, pull it back and forth a few feet to remove some of the dirt pile that builds up under the tines, and it will settle in for the deeper churn right quickly. (3) Get the kickstand. It’s too convenient to skip. (4) I think the real value of this machine (for me, anyhow) lies in its ability to do double-duty. Or quadruple duty, I guess. Treat yourself to the attachments. The power rake, edger, and aerator attachments are fantastically effective additions that really round out the Mantis’s capacity and utility in the yard, turning it into a true year-around workhorse. The attachments have been utterly worth the added expense, and switching between them is an easy and quick affair. My review was not solicited. I am submitting this review only because I am so tickled with it’s performance. The only criticism I can offer so far regards the less than perfect directions for assembly. Some of the nuts did not match what was described or displayed in the directions, and the wording was not entirely intuitive in every instance. Having said that, a little looking at what I had in the box made it clear enough what was needed, and it worked out just fine. The only caution I would have for potential purchasers is the size. This isn’t a critique of the unit itself so much as a cautionary comment to make sure it is what you want. It does a fantastic job for a mini tiller. But it is a mini tiller. My house sits on just shy of 1/3-acre and it takes a long time to work my entire lawn in any mode. If I had more storage room, I’d be wanting their larger model. Especially if my plan were to till the entire yard. Having said that, it does a fantastic job. I am highly impressed that such a small unit can do so much and do it effectively. The amount of time, effort, and money this Mantis has saved me has made me a huge fan. Far better machine than some of the other tillers I have used in the past and I couldn’t be more tickled with my purchase! ... show more

  • Impressive!
Style: Cultivator
I rented one before I bought and that was all I needed to make my decision. Great size, folds up compact, reliable Honda engine, and plenty of power. I bought to start and maintain a 16x32’ garden plot. Admittedly I used the rental to break ground- grass and all. Rather than using pure torque and weight, this relies on super sharp blades and speed to get the job done. It’ll dig in a hurry. Make no mistake though. It may be small and cute, but it’s a workout if you’re using it to do any real task. Buying it for your aging parents (or self) might be counterproductive. Hitting any kind of solid obstacle (large roots, rocks, edging) will cause the machine to jump up more than you’d expect. It can be quite the handful. I didn’t want a big bulky piece of equipment taking up lots of space for something that would be used a few times per year. Despite likley being undersized for my application, it’s comfortable to use and fits the bill nicely. ... show more

  • Nice tool for small gardens
Style: Cultivator
My garden was overgrown and not properly maintained for the last couple of years. A week ago I turned the raised beds over with a shovel. Last night I assembled the Mantis (maybe 30 minutes) and attacked the beds. They were full of tight clumps of grass and weeds. I was VERY IMPRESSED with this cute little tiller. It's easy to use, quiet and does the job. Some of the clumps it would chew right through, some it would spit out the back. The most ornery ones I shook the dirt out of and threw into the compost bin. The huge majority were chewed up and spit out. It's a keeper. For raised beds it's perfect. Small enough to easily fit but powerful enough to dig in break up the clumps. It does collect longer grasses which get wrapped around the tines shaft. I stopped periodically to unclog the tines. I view this not as a fault of the tiller but as penance for neglecting the garden for so long. The Honda motor is easy to start, quiet and plenty powerful enough to do the job. It only bogged down once when there were so many weeds and grass wrapped in the tines it couldn't turn. It's very light. My wife would have no trouble carrying it from place to place nor handling it in the garden. Seeing how yesterday was Mother's Day, I didn't offer her the "opportunity" to try out the Mantis. I think she will be comfortable using it however. ... show more

  • Well built and easy to use
Style: Cultivator
It’s funny, I read some of the “reviews” and found it hard to believe that they were about this same product or if, in fact, the review was even legitimate?! Assembly was relatively easy - just needed a wrench and small socket set. The tiller body and frame feel well built. Once assembled it was quite sturdy. The kickstand worked without issue - contrary to reviews. I’m not sure the amount of oil that came with mine was enough, I did add just a little more. Filled with fuel and it stared right up! No issue with any buttons. The throttle was easy to use and easy to control. I was able to get a good start to a garden bed (about 10” x 10”) in about an hour. Initially was just grass and weeds with an occasional buried rock. I will have to go over the area again before planting but for the size of this tiller I was quite happy. I had an original Troy Built tiller many years ago and that was a beast - no comparison here but never expected it would be. The engine noise was surprisingly quiet. I can easily pick up the entire tiller with one hand (using the convenient handle). Very happy with my purchase so far -it did what it claimed it would do!!! ... show more
