The Xtool D1 Laser Engraver is so much fun! I have been woodburning with a handheld tool for a while and thought that was fun, but this is so much better! I have only had the machine for about a week and everything went smooth for the very beginning. It arrived on time and went to work putting it together. I went slow, following the instructions and when I turned it on we were off to the races. I installed XTool Creative Space, the software that can be downloaded from the XTool site, installed the drivers and updated my firmware. The driver install was a breeze, but I had a heck of a time finding the firmware update switch on the machine. It is necessary that switch be in the on position in order for the firmware update to succeed. It is in the area that the picture in the instructions show, but it is so small I was missing it until I got out my magnifying glass. Once I had the switch in the correct position, the firmware succeeded. The three pictures included are from a few of my projects so far. I smudged out some of the pictures, but the process of using the software and creating your projects is only limited to your imagination. There are a ton of videos on YouTube and the XTool software has a link to projects you can download as well. There is a learning curve in knowing the settings for different things you can do, but even the learning is fun. Although the software is just fine for anyone to do probably anything, I am going to purchase Lightburn soon. I have extensive computer background and think I will be fine with a bit more technical software that might make things a little easier and able to control things a bit more. Perhaps one of the least things reviewed is the support for the products we by, unless it is bad. Well, the support I have received from XTool has been OUTSTANDING! I made mention of a few things from some of the other products that I purchased that I thought were problems, and they have been making every effort to make sure their products are 100% acceptable. It has been a long time since I have had this kind of support from anyone. I am retired and love to keep busy. This new hobby is going to satisfy that requirement easily. I will be using this to make gifts, donations to church craft sales, and maybe even make a dollar or two. No doubt you have figured it out, but I highly recommend this for a beginner like me. I LOVE my XTool laser cutter!!! The first machine I received had a kind fluke issue. I spoke with Alex in their Customer service department and a replacement was immediately sent. I actually received the 10W, which is so so awesome!! It is the best customer service I think I have ever had. The machine is awesome and I can't wait to get home from work so I can work on my Laser Cutter. It works beautifully and their software is easy to use. Also, on another note, I highly recommend buying materials directly from the XTool store. The quality far surpasses anything I have purchased from other sites, especially the wood. This was a Christmas gift from my wife. I am a complete beginner and had never used a laser before, but I can see the possibilities. My advise is to watch the video they have on assembly, it helped clear up questions I had on that. The software does seem very basic, but for me just starting out, that’s all I need. They have videos that show you how to get off and running quickly. It does indicate they are compatible with LightBurn, which is suppose to be a better software, but I haven’t looked into that yet. The overall build quality actually seems very good. Most of the components are metal and all the assembly screws aligned well. It is also packaged well to prevent damage during shipping. My wife also got the rotary attachment. It also seems to be well made, but I haven’t used it yet. You can connect to it through WiFi, and I did run it a small issue where the app on my iPhone wouldn’t connect at first. I rebooted my phone and then it connected, so including this tidbit just in case someone else is having the same problem. Overall I’m very pleased and look forward to incorporating it into my woodworking projects. ... show more

    • What a great toy, er tool.
This is a fun piece of equipment. Pretty easy to put together. The software you can down download for free is kind of limited in what it can do. It is free though. I bought the five watt laser and in hind sight I should have bought the 10 watt. They now have a 20 watt laser head available so maybe that's the next upgrade. Still learning what it can and can't do. Still learning the LightBurn software. If you do go with LightBurn you will need to get the config file for this unit so the software knows the laser offset from the cross hair. Use it in a place that can handle some smoke. Overall it's a pretty nice little laser engraver. I'd buy it again. ... show more

I read into these lasers for months before finally buying one. Set up was easy by watching a video. My advice, take your time and find free test grid files and test them on different materials. Do not cut vinyl or pvc or any material containing chlorine. As always be careful and wear safety glasses and I would strongly suggest an enclosure if you will be working inside with little ventilation. NOTICE: From my experience the 5 watt version will not cut more than 5mm of wood, I would suggest the 10 or the newest 20 watt for cutting. By no means the 5 watt gets left behind, it engraves absolutely fine details. As you can see in my photos I've included. ... show more

This was easy to assemble and well constructed. I found that it was taking a bigger investment of my time to learn and the software that was associated with the product was not very good which meant purchasing other software. Also, I determined that for the kinds of projects I wanted to undertake, I needed a much more powerful laser which was significantly more expensive. Perfect addition to my small business. Works really well for beginner things like engraving leather, wood, etc. Program has updated some since i first got it but it has only gotten better.
