  • Great Tone For A Budget Guitar
Size: Left Handed 39" Color: Green
Around the time that Gibson launched their Adam Jones custom silverburst LP I started listening to Tool on rotation (still am!) and wanted to get that unique Jones tone, but didn’t want to spend a fortune and…I’m left-handed :(. So I looked here for a decent budget guitar to mod and found this awesome green LyxPro lefty LP! To start, this is a budget guitar so I was expecting some faults, which it does have. The finish on the body isn’t perfect as there are a couple of runs under the topcoat. Also, the topcoat is rather brittle around the edges, as I discovered when replacing the jack plate with something more robust. There were tiny pin sized holes in the fretboard which I filled with some ebony fretboard filler and sanded down. The pots were your standard budget pots with not much fine control, and the toggle switch was glitchy but fixed when I required the guitar for the mods. But beyond that this guitar is great! The body is solid wood, the tuners are good and hold in tune, the edges of the fretboard are rather smooth and comfortable. It feels nice under my hand. The frets ends were also nicely rounded off, this not sharp. Solid plastic nut and sturdy tailpiece. Now, for the modifications I made to get that Adam Jones sound: I removed all the electronics and replace them with a Seymour Duncan Super Distortion bridge pickup, and a Gibson custom neck humbucker pickup. For the pots, I replaced the bridge volume with a DiMarzio 500k audio taper pot for awesome volume control allowing for a clean tone when turned down. All other pots were replaced with CTS 500k short-shaft pots. In addition, I bought new .047uF drop capacitors to add between tone and volume pots. I got a new jack and Jack plate for which I needed to drill new and fill in old holes to fit it. I rewired everything myself using the modern wiring schematic (if I remember correctly), added some lefty dials, a new toggle plate, new chrome toggle tip, new Ernie Ball strings and I was ready to rock. The second I plugged it in for the first time and turned the volume up, I got goosebumps. It sounded amazing and now screeched like it needs to for playing Tool songs. Out of my 7 guitars, it is now by far my favorite and I play it on a daily basis. And of course I had to make an Adam Jones style guitar strap to go with it. Overall, this was a great guitar as I bought it, and an awesome guitar for any beginner. But after my, this thing is a rock legend with outstanding sustain. I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Excellent build quality for a budget instrument.
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Green
I am pleasantly surprised by this guitar. The finish is spectacular, the neck feel and fretboard binding are perfect. It is a bit heavy, but as an SG body, this is to be expected. Strat style guitars are lighter, because the bodies are thinner as well. The pickups sound really good. There is an issue with the selector switch which I will have to swap out b/c it sometimes does not select the humbucker. I got this guitar to swap out the pickups with a pair of Fishman Fluence pickups. But after having plugged it in, I don't think I want to change the pickups. They sound really good. This guitar can easily go head to head with 2k+ $ guitars by Gibson. ... show more

  • Good CHEAP Les Paul copy
Size: Left Handed 39" Color: Sunburst
So, is this an exact Les Paul copy? well, no. the build quality isn't there. Not saying that the build quality is bad, but there were a few issues. As with ALL cheap guitars, there was a lot of excess polish residue in the cavities. And a few spots that still have some very minimal orange peeling. There is a tiny bit of sharp frets, but I just got it. I'll see again in a few months if they sprout more. There was an area on the back by the pot cover that the finish was not smooth. It seemed like the masking was on the back instead of in the cavity or something. And there was one burn through from the polishing. There was a very small dent on the back bottom. When I can, I'll take some pictures and post them. Also, the binding on the neck has a spot that the yellowing seemed to be worn down from the fret filing. Not a big deal. The 'B' string's tuner is a bit tight. But the tuners themselves are pretty good. The dials on the pots are kind of close together, if you compare it to other Les Pauls and Les Paul copies. Now for the good things. I got this 'Lyx Pro' for about $179. I also have two Oscar Scmidt Les Paul copies that were around $212. They have a slightly better finish, but they have the tear drop tobacco sunburst. I really wanted a perimeter tobacco burst. This Lyx Pro is more of a combo cherry/tobacco burst. The color is a bit lighter than the Oscar Scmidt. But the Lyx Pro has a cherry back. The Oscar Scmidts have a black back. The Oscar Scmidts also are about 1/2" thinner than this one. The Lyx Pro's pickups aren't the best. They are missing a lot of bass, especially the bridge pickup. I'll probably be replacing them anyway. The switch knob was bent. I unscrewed it and reinstalled it and it's fine now. The knob has a spot that's white from the plastic stretching, but I have a few extras. It came really well set up. The neck has just the right amount of bow in it. I just stretched the strings a bit and tuned it. The action was really good, but I like really low action, so I lowered it and there was very little buzzing after lowering the action really low. I plan on doing a full set up after a few days to let the wood settle. But I feel that there will be very little to do. The intonation was pretty good. I adjusted it a little and it's right on. I have to admit, I really like this guitar. It plays like butter. I'm really glad that I got it. But again, we'll see in a few weeks where the humidity takes it! ... show more
