  • Surprising value and lightweight
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Mahogany
Very Good: 1) Lightweight (mine is 6.1 lbs) due to Paulownia wood. Years ago I played a Fender Brad Paisley Esquire (also Paulownia, but $1,600) and was amazed. Much less fatiguing to heft for long periods. This is what sets the Lyxpro tele apart from Monoprice and all the others. 2) Finish and overall looks -- looks as good as the pictures. Decent Enough: 1) Strings and frets were a bit gritty, so put on new strings and polished frets. 2) Pickups - not great, but not bad, especially the neck one. 3) Volume -- more linear than I expected, not just off/on. 4) Tone - very useable, unlike my other guitars that stay mostly at 10. Full treble on bridge p/u is bright and twangy, then can dial back to get many other tones... it doesn't just 'darken' the sound. (This might be true of all teles) 4) Neck and frets -- action initially very high; lowered bridge and gave truss rod 1/8 turn for more relief - not ultra low, but ok and playable. (see YT StewMac tele setup vid for easy guide). 5) Nut -- mine was cut right- no binding or popping. I penciled in some graphite. Note, strings are 9s -- I discovered the nut slots would need filing to accommodate 10s. Not Good: a couple of frets had slight string indentations. Would send it back if $400+ guitar, but expected some flaws for $99. Suggestion is to insert cardboard strip between strings and frets for shipping. SUMMARY: I have several guitars, but no tele type so wanted one for fun but w/o a big spend. Intrigued by good reviews on all the various budget models. Zeroed in on the Lyxpro due to Paulownia. A few flaws as expected, but overall great value and definitely cheapest way to have a lightweight guitar on hand. Someday I might try to upgrade pickups, controls, and/or bone nut (for 10s), but it's a low priority at this point. ... show more

  • Disappointing, even for a budget guitar
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Mahogany
I was not expecting much, but this guitar still didn't live up to those very low standards. For context, the most expensive guitar I own is a Mexican Strat; I'm by no means accustomed to the greatest instruments out there. That said, this guitar arrived already damaged. The bottom right of the guitar had some kind of impact damage--right where your hand would go to support its weight or try to find the output jack. There are also two cracks, though it looks like they're just in the lacquer. My guess is the neck screws were driven in too tightly, as the cracks are right around the neck pocket. There was also some waxy gunk on the neck, but that scraped off easily. Also, the control plate was very loose, but again, that was easily fixed. Still, seeing a guitar arrive in this condition new out of the box was a let down. Even for a cheap alternative, I don't expect any product to arrive damaged. Other than these flaws, the guitar does look nice, overall. The neck is very straight and the action is almost perfect, so the playability in that regard is good. The neck has a slight round-over on the edges, which seems like a nice touch until I noticed how rough and unfinished that beveled edge was. The frets don't stick out terribly, though. There are some tiny details and flaws that I could nitpick over, but for something this low-end, it's not worth mentioning. I'm still in the process of trying to intonate this thing, which is always an annoyance but especially here. I view this as a project guitar, something to practice working on, and it will need it; going to try to do some fret leveling for the first time because, again, it needs it. Some slight buzz here and there. Most importantly, though, are the pickups: They suck. The bridge is EXTREMELY microphonic. The neck is fine by comparison, just dull and dark. That's fine; I was expecting so little, and thought I'd end up replacing them down the line if I really wanted to. Now I know I'll HAVE to replace the pickups, because playing on the bridge or middle positions is harsh, grating, and terrible. I'm someone who likes weird noises, industrial and experimental music, and while I could find some unconventional uses for this flaw, simply trying to play normally, especially with any gain, is terrible. It's an annoying, unusable sound. It picks up the acoustic strum of the strings and amplifies them into a harsh, clanging, irritating sound that has no place in what you'd want out of a normal electric guitar. If you want something you have to fix, that will challenge you and that will need lots more work and money put into it, then I guess this is one way to go. But I don't know that I'd recommend it. ... show more

  • Problem not the product, but the vendor - SKYMALL
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Mahogany
Listed as 'Acceptable' condition, so expected some minor problems. Bought as a cheap guitar to Mod so wasn't too worried about minor problems...however: Problems: -Neck had a reverse bow in it. had to make major adjustments. -Neck joint had some pretty major cracks on both sides indicating it had probably been dropped hard on the headstock. Definitely strange for a Tele type guitar. -1st string tuner has loose riser and heavy indentation in it. Again, indicates being dropped hard on headstock. - Body has chip in front edge near jack plate. Again, probably dropped. -Frets were so sharp along neck they scraped my skin. Had filed them down to make it usable. Had made too many adjustments before I noticed the neck joint crack, or I would have asked to return it. Could have gotten a guitar like this at a pawn shop cheaper! If I had known, I probably would not have purchased. Will never buy from this vendor again. ... show more

  • Better than expected.
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Mahogany
For $100 this guitar was worth it. I’ve been playing guitar for roughly 36 years. The guitar came tuned and properly setup. The neck was really smooth and the frets felt pretty good. There were no rough edges at the top or the bottom of the frets. I primarily play acoustic and wanted an electric to mess around with at home. I would definitely buy another one to have around. I changed out the strings to my preferred brand Dean Markley Blue Steel. After stretching them and tuning them I picked it up again a few hours later stayed perfectly in tune. ... show more
