We love our Little Hippo Ok to Wake Clock! Both of our kids love using it as a light, white noise, and for timekeeping. It is easy to set up and use. • Great Product to Foster Independence!
Color: Teal
Short version: We are very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this product. We use it as intended for bedtime and “quiet time” (independent play in bedroom instead of nap time) for our three year old. Mella boasts many useful features and is easy to set up. Once you train your child on Mella’s cues, this product could give you back hours of sleep. Want more info? Read on. :) ———- Update (April 2024, after 3.5 years): Mella has continued working great! The product is still so helpful with our oldest child and now our middle child, who shares a room with our oldest. We have a child with high functioning autism, and Mella has been a lifesaver with that child’s anxiety regarding bedtime issues (when to stay in bed, wake up, get up, etc.). Mella is a staple in our home, and we’re going to buy another for our youngest child’s room now. I still highly recommend Mella! ——— Original Review: As expected, we needed to teach our child how to respond to Mella’s cues, but once he understood that and we reinforced our expectations through reward and consequence, our son stopped waking us up at ridiculously early hours in the morning. Training our pretty stubborn and resistant-to-change son to use Mella took around three weeks or so, but it has been so worth it. In addition to waking later, he has mostly stopped the middle of the night wakes, which is great! Mella is also such a nice clock to keep him in his room for his post-lunch quiet time. It works like a charm! In order for the transition to go smoothly, we started the Mella wake time close to the time he was already waking and then slowly and incrementally made that time later to our desired wake time. After that, we taught our son about the “play time” feature which automatically turns on for thirty minutes before the green light, if you select that feature. Our son went from waking us around 5:30 AM to now waking at 7:00 with Mella and then playing quietly and independently in his room until 7:30 AM. AAAND because we use the setting with a quiet light cue (turns green), sometimes our son is so busy that he doesn’t even notice and keeps playing, allowing us even more extra sleep (or extra time with baby). We recently were away from home and didn’t bring Mella, and boy, did we regret it! We didn’t realize how often our son wakes at night, but looks at Mella and goes back to sleep. It gives him security and fosters independence through the “okay to wake” cues. Without Mella, he runs to us in the dead of night desperately asking if it is morning time yet (can’t rely on daylight because of our latitude and gloomy climate). We will be buying an extra cord (since we affixed the provided cord to the wall for safety) so we can bring Mella with us on trips. You can buy an extra cord on LittleHippo’s website for around $7 after shipping. All of the features are very useful and set up is intuitive. You can choose from quite a few nightlight colors, and the set colors that Mella uses are yellow for play time and green for “okay to wake/leave room.” We personally use red at night because it is a more sleep-friendly color and we can say, “red means stay in bed.” Mella has both audible and visual (green light) alarms (you can select either), various sound machine-type white noise sounds, and nap time features, as well as a child lock. Our son would easily switch off the lock though, so we just put Mella out of reach. Our son loves that “Mella” (we call it by its product name) has a face and a personality of sorts. Mella is happy when awake, playful during playtime, and asleep during bedtime. It is an endearing little clock that our son loves. We plan on using it for years to come and changing the settings as our son’s needs change. Maybe he’ll eventually need an alarm to wake him up? It is important to note that although this clock comes with batteries, they are only present to save your settings in the case of the clock losing its power supply (power outage or unplugged). Because of all the features it boasts, Mella needs to be plugged in at all times to work. I found this was the case in the majority of “okay to wake” clocks. Because our son is very curious and will not leave electronics alone, we placed Mella on a floating shelf and covered the cord with a cord protector (see pics). We have no complaints about this clock, and are so thankful that it exists. Our only suggestion would be that LittleHippo consider making a wall mounted clock that can run on rechargeable batteries (charge via USB-type cable). It could attach to the wall via magnets so it’s easy to take down and recharge every couple/few days. Perhaps it could have a simpler design so that it doesn’t use as much energy to run? Thank you, LittleHippo, for such a quality product! You’ve made our lives so much easier. :) ... show more

  • Works pretty well; wish we could modify light brightness and almost-wake-up-time feature
Color: Blush Pink
TL;DR, on the whole I would recommend this product to others, even though we have some issues with the light brightness and the inability to modify the 30 minute yellow light pre-wake up feature. We got this for my then 15 month old to try to help him to know when he should lay down and go back to sleep, as he was waking up about an hour earlier than we would have liked in the morning. He loves this clock and points at it and talks about it frequently. He has been able to connect to the facial expressions (frequently points at it saying "eyes! eyes!") and definitely notices when the lights come on for waking up in the morning (every morning at the light change he gets up saying "clock! clock!"). I think he is using these features, as he has gotten better at laying back down until it's about time to wake up. Mostly we've found the clock easy to program. The only thing we didn't immediately figure out was how to dim the display. The default setting for the display was way too bright and this was keeping my son waking up too early and in the middle of the night. Even with no night light on, the display was essentially as bright as a night light. However, when we dim it to the dimmest possible display brightness (by pressing the "Clock" button), it's not too bright and doesn't wake my son up. We do not use the white noise (we have a white noise machine that produces a "whiter" noise) and we also don't use the alarms, as we're not trying to use this clock to wake up the baby up at a certain time. We primarily use the clock to try to signal when my son has woken too early and needs to try to lay back down and keep sleeping. The main drawback for us: all of the lights from the ring around the outside of the clock are just too bright for him to sleep with. This means that the night light feature is completely unusable for us. We indicate that it's sleep-time for him with the clock having a "sleep" face and no lights on. Unfortunately, the light brightness also means that when the yellow "almost-time-to-wake" light comes on, it wakes him up right away, even though the clock is ~10 ft. away from him across the room. I try to turn the clock away from him a bit, but there's only so much I can do that where he can still see the facial expressions. It's unfortunate that we cannot toggle this feature off or change the amount of time it shows before wake up time; it's fixed to turn on 30 minutes before wake up. We've gotten around this a bit by shifting the wake up by a half hour, so we basically let him get up when the clock turns yellow. It does mean that the clock functions more to actually wake him up, vs. letting him know if it's okay to get up when he wakes up naturally (what we'd prefer). Maybe I'll experiment with putting some kind of thin cloth over the outside of the clock so that he can still see the colored lights when he looks at it, but it's not so bright that it immediately wakes him up. While I'm making a wishlist of features, I wish I could program the nap times on the clock too the same way that night sleep times are programmed. Practically speaking, I'm just not going to go over to the clock and eff around with it to set some kind of timer for naps every time we put him down, and I also am not trying to wake him up after a specific nap duration, so the timer concept doesn't really work for us. My use case is just for the clock to indicate if it is _okay_ for him to wake up or if he should try to keep sleeping. I would like it if I could just point to it the way I do at bedtime and say, "Look, the clock went to sleep, so it's time for you to sleep." Overall, though, my son does understand that we put him to sleep when the clock is asleep and when the clock is sleeping, he needs to be sleeping, and he also understands that we will not be coming into his room before the clock lights up. He chats to himself in his crib until the lights come on, and only when there are lights does he start crying for us. So, overall, this product is still a win. ... show more

  • Great clock!
Color: Arctic Blue
This is a wonderful clock to get your little one or yourself used to a schedule. It’s super easy to set up. Great selections of colors to choose from for the nightlight option. Plus, it’s just simply adorable! My only dislike about it would be the fact that it HAS to stay plugged in for it to work. I wish it would take batteries to help keep it out of reach of the little one. Or at least have a longer cord. All in all, this is a 9 out of 5 star product! It would be 10 out of 5 but the battery/cord issue. But still, 9 out of 5 is still an excellent score! :) ... show more

  • SO great and works like a charm
Color: Arctic Blue
Seriously the best thing we could’ve gotten to help our kiddos stay in their room in the morning AND get to bed on time at night. The light is a little bit bright, even on the lowest setting. So we really don’t use that very often. Also, we love this because you don’t have to have an alarm so it’s silently changes from no light to yellow to green. FABULOUS. Would recommend to everyone. ... show more

  • A lifesaver for littles!
Color: Arctic Blue
We use “cwock” every night to help our three year old from waking up at the butt crack of dawn yelling it was time to wake up. With a newborn too this is a life saver purchase and worth every penny. She knows now when the clock turns green, then she can scream. It’s great for teaching them the concept of time and setting routines. It turns yellow 15 min before it turns green so they can anticipate it happening. It’s worth the price you pay for it! It’s also great for nap times or quiet time! ... show more
