  • Pros and Cons for a child with Autism Spectrum and Sensory Processing Disorders
Color: Bright Purple
Before I dive into it, I want to clarify that many points of this review will be specifically about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD.) However, there are some points that apply to individuals who are not autistic or have SPD. I bought the MELLA Ready to Rise Children's Sleep Trainer for my 3.5-year old autistic daughter. I do not have the problem that many other parents seem to have with children about my daughter's age as she usually stays in bed playing on her own until someone comes to get her. We're very fortunate in that sense. The main purpose for which I bought this product is because I want my daughter to learn to be more independent. That statement takes me to the main feature that made me choose this product over other similar ones. Any parent of an autistic child will attest to the fact that our children do not understand the concept of time or having to wait for something. I have seen some reviews in here saying that they rather not have the clock go from sleep mode to play mode and then wake mode. Those parents wanted to override the play mode, going straight from sleep mode to wake mode. If that's what you want for your child, then this product is not for you as it does not allow you to turn the play mode off. Those parents would be better off buying a product like the Mirari OK to Wake! or the Toddler Stay-In-Bed light clock, or any other similar product. I almost bought the OK to Wake! clock because my daughter's therapists say that product is the most popular among their patients. However, from my experience as the mother of an autistic child, I do not want my child sitting in bed for hours, or worse going into some autistic meltdown or getting out of bed because they have been waiting for a long time for the light in her clock to turn on. I like the transition from no light or from night light to yellow for play time and then green for wake mode. My daughter, as well as a lot of non-verbal autistic children, already understands the correlation between red = stop, yellow = wait, and green = go. The MELLA clock offers precisely that. (Side note: It does not have a red light, but it does have a strong pink / purple.) CON: You cannot change the play time mode from its 30-minute setting. I would have liked to be able to set it to 15 minutes, instead. Thirty minutes seems way too long of a time for my daughter to be sitting or playing in bed waiting for it to change to green. I would have liked to have that option. Another reason why I bought this product is because I liked that it offered night light and sleep machine. You are basically getting a 3-in-1 product. At the time of buying this product, I was using a clock, one of those sound animals you could buy at Babies R Us, an old cell phone with a sleep app, a night light, and a humidifier with a star projector. I wanted to stop having to use so many things. Unfortunately, the sleep sound machine is very loud. CON: Sound machine volume cannot be changed. For a child with SPD, this can be a problem. I muffle the sound with an old sock. I shouldn't have to. But that's the only way I found to get around this problem. Now to the night light. PRO: Five different colours to pick from. And I love all five options. CON: Too bright. All of them. The amber option is the only one that is mild enough. I wish there would be a way to dim them, like you do the clock face, which comes with 5 different levels of brightness. This is a PRO for me, by the way. But I would have liked to have that option for the rim that works as night light and for the play and wake modes. I have not tried to use the alarm, yet. There's no need with my child. She tends to wake up pretty much around the same time and without assistance. So I will refrain from making any comments about this feature. A lot of people have complained about it being difficult to set up because the buttoms are on the bottom of the clock or for any other reason. This is actually a good thing for me as it prevents little hands from touching things by accident. There's also a lock button that blocks all setting options when turned to locked, but does not interfere with the alarm, night light, or wake modes. The user manual is very clear. I did not have any problems figuring out how to set it up, which I did mostly on my own without the assistance of the user manual. I did refer to the user manual to figure our the wake mode and night light. But the rest was very straight forward. My last comment might be a bit picky; however, I'm going to mention it anyway. I bought the Bright Purple model. The pictures on Amazon showed it to be more like a lavander, at least on my screens. I was surprised when I opened the package to find that it was a deep purple, more like violet. But I don't care. I can live with that. So autism, SPD, or not, to summarize, PROS: Size (about the size of a big apple.) - Five variety of colours for night light - Sound machine - Goes from no light (or night light) to yellow to green, which is perfect for many children to understand that they still have to wait a bit longer to get out of bed - Seems sturdy enough - Clock face is very clear and simple to understand - Dimming option for clock face. CONS: Too loud as a sound machine - No option to change the volume for the sound machine - Night light and play/wake mode ring can be too bright for some individuals - No ability to dim the rim - No option to just turn the wake mode off for weekends (you basically have to set the whole thing off and reprogram comes Sunday night. If you don't care about waking up at the same time on weekends, then this doesn't affect you. But my family usually doesn't get up at the same time over weekends and this implies one more step for us to take care of on Friday night. But we can live with it.) I'm abstaining of giving an opinion about the alarm as we are not using it. Overall, I would recommend this product to other parents and I have not regretted buying it. I just wish that it would allow me to further customize it to my needs, especially considering that it's not a really inexpensive product. Give these options and I will change my review to 5 stars. ... show more

  • Good machine, GREAT for stubborn toddlers!
Color: Blush Pink
For my concise opinion scroll to the last paragraph. Otherwise, I have a very in depth review of how we used this machine. I purchased this light alarm clock for my daughter (who turned 2 in August) in November. A little background on my toddler. She is very stubborn and strong willed. Has big emotions and very clingy to me (mom). I was having issues with her throwing huge fits and wanting out of her crib early in the morning. She would scream nonstop “get me out” until I would come and get her. Needless to say, I was not about to let her get up that early or allow her to “scream me into submission.” First transition: sleep function set for desired “time to get out of crib.” The first morning we used this she woke up early and was yelling to get out. I told her over our camera microphone to look at “Mella” (we just kept the cute name of the clock). I told her, “Mella is YELLOW. That means ALMOST time to get out. When Mella is GREEN, mom will come get you.” The clock stays yellow for a total of 30 minutes, but she had to wait about 15 for it to turn green. I had to remind her, “mom will come when Mella is green” a few more times over the camera, but when it turned green I opened the door and exclaimed, “Mella is GREEN! It’s time to get out!” I acted very excited and kept reinforcing that GREEN means time to get out. That system worked SEAMLESSLY for the next few months. If she woke up before the clock turned green she would wait quietly until it turned. Once it turned green she would yell, “Mom, Mella’s green!” The clock stays green for one hour after turning on, which was great for when she slept in. Fast forward to January. We transitioned her to a new room and “big kid bed.” I was very nervous about her staying in bed/her room. Second transition: keeping her in her ROOM until the light turned green. Since she was already used to the “Mom will get me when the light turns green” method, the transition was a BREEZE. She would play happily in her room until the light turned green and then would knock on her door and tell me it was time for her to get out. So great! Then, about a week later she started getting out of bed at night, turning on her lamp and playing when she was supposed to be in bed. It was a struggle. Third transition: keeping her in bed for bedtime. We used the red light function as a night light and told her, “When Mella’s red, stay in bed.” I told her over and over at bed time and had her repeat it after me. After I left the room I watched her on our camera. She went to the end of the bed, but did not get out, looked at the light for a little bit and laid back down. I WAS SHOCKED! Especially after such nighttime battles before! Our most recent transition: we now use the clock for “rest time.” Since transitioning out of a crib, it was difficult to get her to take naps. She quickly figured out how easy it was to get out and play. I had to accept that maybe she wouldn’t nap anymore, but wanted her to have a “quiet time” for an hour in her room. She can nap or play, but she needs to stay in her room. So, I used the nap function. I set the light to blue and again tell her that, “When Mella’s green mom will come get you.” Sometimes she naps, sometimes she plays during that time. But the best part is that I get a break and she has a physical indicator of when mom will be back. Overall I have absolutely LOVED this method for my toddler. I was shocked that given her strong personality it would be a long struggle to get her to cooperate. But it honestly worked so great! So lastly, I want to talk about why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. I wish I could give this machine a 4.5. Here is why: - light functions: 5 - light brightness: 4 (A little too bright in my opinion, but doesn’t seem to be an issue for our child) - sleep mode: 5 - nap mode: 5 - child lock: 5 (my toddler did figure out how to unlock it, but we just put it on a high dresser so she can’t mess with it. I give it a 5 because it’s there and isn’t glaringly obvious to operate to a toddler) - set up: 5 (super easy, didn’t even read directions, very intuitive) - cuteness: 5 (my daughter loves the little face. Especially when it “blinks”!) - Sound alarm: N/A (We haven’t used this, yet) - Noise functions: 2, at best So this would be my only truly negative opinion on this machine. The noise is very quiet and not very pleasant sounding. It’s not a huge deal for us though because we just use a different white noise machine for our daughter. If you‘ve read all the way to this point, congrats! The last paragraph is a short summary of how I feel about the machine overall. Overall, this light clock method worked WONDERS for my stubborn, emotional, wonderful 2 year old daughter. Great for naps/playtime and bedtime. Lights are a little on the bright side (which may or not be good for your child) and the white noise/soothing sounds function is subpar. Would recommend to others! ... show more

  • Perfect for my 5 year old!
Color: White, Teal
My 5 year old daughter is in Kindergarten, and this clock is perfect! I am able to set the trainer so she knows that if she wakes up before her alarm goes off, whether to stay in bed a little longer if it is yellow, or she is clear to get out of bed if it is green! She gets up to shut off the alarm, and it definitely gives her a sense of independence which any 5 year old loves. She feels so grown up and it has helped our morning routine of getting ready for school and out the door on time! 10/10 recommend ... show more

  • Life saver!
Color: Arctic Blue
I usually wouldn't write a review only two or days after trying a product but Mella has been a life changer! I have 3 year old twins, one is a night owl and struggles to go to sleep while the other passes right out and wakes up early. They also would run around their bedroom and instigate not going to bed... And then there is Mella. The first night, they watched Mella go to sleep and they went right to bed. In the morning, my son is an early riser, like 5:30 AM to 6 AM and wakes us or his sister up. Nope! Not with Mella. He laid in bed until he saw Mella wake up and turn green. We appreciate the extra sleep!!! Based on reading prior reviews, they creators of Mella clearly read their reviews and take them to heart because some of the past issues others had have been fixed. They light is dims well, you can turn morning play time off and just use the face and light (no alarm). Two full mornings of sleeping until my own alarm is much appreciated! I highly recommend Mella! I chose it over Hatch and I am glad I did. ... show more
