  • Makes a great gift
This was a Christmas gift and my grandson seems to like it.

  • Fun educational toy
This is an updated version of the coding critter from two years ago. The wand and booklet make it very child friendly for my kindergartner.

  • Fun and creative
My daughter has really enjoyed it. Screen free play time. It comes with a book with different “codes” to type into the wand.

  • HAZARDOUS
STEM toys are typically excellent and highly instructive, but unfortunately, this particular one proved to be hazardous. My grandson used it for less than ten minutes before the remote became so hot that it burned my skin. Surprisingly, one of the batteries began to split due to the extreme heat, as you can observe in the attached photo. ... show more

  • Great toy for 4yo+
This toy is made for preschoolers and early elementary aged children. My 4yo twins have really enjoyed playing with the Coding Critters (we have this dragon and the unicorn version) although they can't play with them independently. There are two modes: Spell mode and Coding mode. The Coding mode has the horn glowing white, and when you program a sequence (e.g. Forward, forward, left, back, back) and then hit the center flame button, it executes that sequence. This allows you to set courses for your kid (e.g. go through the castle door and bump the ball) and you can use the included cardboard chits to help plan out what the sequence should be. Switch to the spell mode by hitting the button below the D-pad. This mode takes 4-button sequences on the D-pad that will do something like "dance" or "guard" or "sing a song." The sequences for these are the spells in the included spellbook. It has a sensor in the nose that allows it to detect or track objects a few inches away, such as the included ball. I'm pretty sure both the wand and the nose sensor are IR; we noted degraded performance when the Vive Lighthouses were on, so if you have any sort of IR interference these may not work as well. Bright sunlight might also interfere. We do have both the dragon and the unicorn version of this toy, and thankfully they don't seem to interfere with each other. My 4 year olds need constant supervision with these; they can't read yet so they need help finding the right spell in the spellbook, and if they accidentally switch between Coding and Spell mode they sometimes need help switching back. Batteries: Takes 5 AAA batteries, not included. If the batteries are low, first it will start failing to play songs but still move around, and then it will stop moving at beep at you. So if it's not playing music and dancing appropriately, try some fresh batteries first. We found that it doesn't work well with rechargeables, either. Included extras: The spellbook is integral to play (unless your child memorizes all of the spells) but it's flimsy paper held together with staples. The included catapult is fun but also functional; the fireballs may not be with us for much longer. Some of the other items included feature in the spellbook to give your child and their dragon scenarios to act out and for imaginative play. They're all either plastic or laminated cardboard. ... show more

  • Adorable STEM Toy
This was a great addition to the Christmas line-up for my niece. It was rewarding to see her face light up and embrace learning with this toy. undoubtedly it did create an inteltucually stimulating toy, but it also held her very short attention span. Putting everything together is very easy, and "programming" it is very easy. Your kids will have no problems learning to use it on their own after some initial help from you. If you are looking for a fun educational toy, this is it! ... show more

  • Amazing set and tons of fun for the kids
This Coding Critters set comes with a wand and spell book to control the animal. Like all the other sets there are obstacles for the creature to accomplish and a story line to follow. I found this set particularly cool with a catapult that throws plastic fireballs and a castle for the dragon to go through. It was a big hit with the kids and they had fun casting various spells to move the dragon. ... show more
