  • Bike still stolen with this supposedly heavy duty lock
Style: New-U 2017
I put this lock on my bike on a bike rack outside my apartment as soon as i got it. Four days later, my bike was stolen. The thieves had managed to open the lock without cutting the lock. Though it does seem like they tried to judging by the marks left on the side of the lock. It seems they were able to pull the lock apart somehow since when I try to put the lock back together it didn't fit back in since it was still technically locked. Also their warranty is bullshit and doesn't work for used bikes since they require a receipt. Anyway, I don't recommend this lock to anyone. Terrible product. ... show more

  • Heavy and very heavy duty
Style: New-U 2017
I bought one of these to try first, as the frames of our LectricBikes are rather thick, and the first two locks weren't long enough, or robust enough, since ebikes seem to be the first choice of bike thieves these days. I've had a bike stolen, and I've been super cautious since then. This is the second of these locks that I've bought, as the first passed muster, and we have two of these bikes. The locks will only go from the frame to a stationary object, when used to lock the bike to that fixed object, but at least they'll do that. A long version folding lock would also, but they're more expensive for one which is similarly robust. On the downside, this is probably heavier. We'll still need to add other protection for the wheels (I'm thinking a frame lock on the rear wheel if it will work with the bike design), but at least this is a good start. It won't stop a determined thief with the right tools, but at least it would significantly slow him/her down, and make stealing our bikes less attractive. • It's a decent U-Lock but can still be cut
Style: New-U 2017
I have the mini-u-lock and chain from Kryptonite and will probably continue to use that one instead of getting another U-lock. This one was probably cut from both sides with a power saw. Yes, broad daylight in the middle of the street in Battery Park City, NY. Managed to get bike back, but the lock is done. It's no better than any other - maybe slows down the cutting by a minute or two? ... show more

  • Heavy but really a timer saver when locking up your electric kick scooters
Style: New-U 2017
If you own an electric kick scooter (I have a m365 and a 9bot max), you probably figured out by now that bike rack locking can be a pain. I bought this lock thinking I'd only use it in the roughest neighborhoods. However, I found the convenience of this lock making it my "go-to" lock in most cases. It's not a cure all, but its size fits well around many (not all) bike racks. Additionally, your scooter is protected across the deck. I guess thieves can saw your scooter in half to get it, but that's about the only security flaw I can think of. This lock weighs almost 5 pounds and probably hurts the battery on your scooter a bit with the extra weight, but I am really happy I own it. ... show more

  • The only U-lock to get for the "not if, but when" cases of attempted bike theft.
Style: New-U 2017
This is my second New York U lock, the other being the smaller Fahgettaboutit U lock (which is possibly safer than this). They're ridiculously burly... seriously look at the weight before you buy so you know what you're in for. Get the smallest U lock you can that works for your bike. The smaller NY Fahghetaboutit is JUST enough for a road tire, frame, and a normal bike rack or meter post. You don't want space in there, it allows for a hydraulic jack to be inserted and break the lock. This bigger one is needed for larger tires. I have it for a 700x52c tire on an urban commute/trekking bike. A determined bike thief can ultimately get through any lock setup, but this is probably the best I've seen for slowing them down, or at least sending them to an easier target. ... show more

  • Beefy
Style: New-U 2017
This is a sturdy, sturdy U-lock. Is it possible to use an angle grinder to get through it? Absolutely. I don't, however, worry about it because the metal is so thick that it would be a significant risk for a bike thief to attempt it - especially when there are many other bikes secured with cable locks and thinner u-locks around it. My only (minor) complaint is the function of the lock. There have been a few times where a piece of dirt or pocket lint slid into the lock and made it so that the key doesn't turn. Most of the time, readjustment allows the key to turn, and it isn't an issue. I have, however, been scared to be forced to walk home on a couple of occasions. Overall, I trust this lock, which is the most significant component to this review. Buy it if you're locking up your bicycle in a higher risk area but remember that any lock can be bypassed with the correct equipment. ... show more

  • Very heavy and sturdy lock. This is what you need for a short locking capabilities
Style: New-U 2017
Being in NYC, I only use the bike a lot and this help with my peace of mind when i park my bike in a shady area or by the project. It will definitely take more than 5 minutes to cut through this thick steel using an electric grinder. My advise is to NEVER leave the bike for longer than 30 minutes and definitely don't lock your bike outside overnight. Being a New Yorker, this is a big NO NO. Unless you want your bike to get stolen, no matter what kind of lock you own, do not leave your bike outside overnight or for more 30 minutes at a time. There no lock the NY thieves can't cut through given enough time to work on them. ... show more

  • Best Bike Lock for the Money
Style: New-U 2017
The Krytonite New York bike lock is probably the best lock out there for the money. Yes, there’s a YouTube Video of a guy cracking in in less than two minutes. There’s also people that can crack $100,000 safes. The goal is not to eliminate risk; that’s impossible. The goal is to find the balance of risk reduction with the cost/effort required while considering what your trying to protect. For a $20 knock around bike, pick up $5 lock at target. For a $$2,000 roadie, this lock is appropriate. UPDATE: Had a brief moment of buyers remorse when I realized the lock’s size made impossible to attach to my bike and even heavy to carry in back back. Bought a smaller Kryptonite lock for riding and use the monster as a second lock at home. I also use it for temporarily securing other items on ground floor condo patio. ... show more
