It is a bit heavy if you carry it in a bag but if you use the holder for bike /scooter it just sits out of your way until you need it.The key goes in easily and the lock functions great. Not sure how these would do in a city with intense bike theft where people are running around in trucks with angle grinders and bolt cutters, but this seems very secure. It feels sturdy and comes with an 8mm braided steel cable, which gives some extra flexibility for locking my bike to various racks. If you're looking for a good, solid lock this ViaVelo is a great choice. It's tough, simple to lock and flexible to mount in several locations. You may want to try mounting the lock a couple of different ways to see which will work best for your bike and riding style. The instructions show mounting positions on the seat post, down tube and crossbar. You may find other spots that work depending on your bike's design. I think the mount works on most tubes between 20mm and 42mm. It can be a little tricky to install, so make sure to follow the directions to secure it properly. For me, the best option was mounting on the crossbar back toward the seat post. I thought there were fewer vibrations in that spot even on trail and city rides. The lock action is smooth and the keys do not jam. It also has an onboard cap to keep your locking mechanism dry when not in use. The cable is strong and just the right length to secure your bike without being too bulky to bring along on a ride. You may need to practice the best way to use the U-lock and cable to secure both wheels and your frame. There are videos online with some great ideas if you need help with that. After a full season of use, I did have a part break on the mount. So, I contacted customer service and they offered to send me a replacement straightaway. So, it's good to know on a purchase like this that the company is standing behind their product. Overall, this is a great lock for me and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another ViaVelo. ... show more

Review long over due. I Love the Velo Lock,Love its Thickness, Love its portability, Love its accessory to carry it. Remember tho a lock is only as good as How one properly uses it. The media could not be loaded. This lock is pretty big, so if you have a bicycle like mine which doesn't have a perfectly level/parallel to the ground cross bar, or you have a "step-through" style bicycle, you will have to get creative with mounting this The mount consists of two pieces - one for each side of a round pole. On my bicycle, the cross bar is at an angle. Additionally, it is an oval-ish shape so the included mount would not work on it. Also because of the angle of the cross bar, there was not enough clearance for the entire U lock to fit in that space under the cross bar and in front of the seat post. Fortunately, the mount rotates, as does the mount's clip on the U lock itself, which allowed me to install the U lock to the side of the seat tube and under the cross bar. While riding the bike, this doesn't affect my peddling, but it does affect when I need to stop and straddle the bicycle (I'm short, and my seat is high up, so I have to dismount to reach the ground.) The mount itself is sturdy if you crank the screws down, which you really have to do to ensure it doesn't rotate in place. The same with the tiny hex bolt that holds the clip to the lock itself. The thick cable provided is a generous length and allowed for me to tether both of my kids' bicycles to my own bike and loop through my front wheel as well. The cable is stiff so don't expect to try to wrap the cable around the U lock itself and carry it all together; it won't work. I had to carry the cable in my bookbag. It has two velcro wraps to roll the cable up into a large roll. My only real complaint about this lock is that as some other reviews have pointed out, it is NOISY when riding. The U portion of the lock makes a loud and noticeable metallic rattle inside of the base when locked so whenever I hit a bump, it makes noise. I am working on figuring out a way to shim the lock with padding or tape or something else to silence it and will update my review if I figure something out. ... show more
