I like everything about this lock. The build quality is great. It is a bit heavy if you carry it in a bag but if you use the holder for bike /scooter it just sits out of your way until you need it.The key goes in easily and the lock functions great. The length is perfect especially when it comes with the longer safty attachment that you can put around another bike or just for double protection. Not sure how these would do in a city with intense bike theft where people are running around in trucks with angle grinders and bolt cutters, but this seems very secure. If you're looking for a good, solid lock this ViaVelo is a great choice. It's tough, simple to lock and flexible to mount in several locations. You may want to try mounting the lock a couple of different ways to see which will work best for your bike and riding style. The instructions show mounting positions on the seat post, down tube and crossbar. You may find other spots that work depending on your bike's design. I think the mount works on most tubes between 20mm and 42mm. It can be a little tricky to install, so make sure to follow the directions to secure it properly. For me, the best option was mounting on the crossbar back toward the seat post. I thought there were fewer vibrations in that spot even on trail and city rides. The lock action is smooth and the keys do not jam. It also has an onboard cap to keep your locking mechanism dry when not in use. The cable is strong and just the right length to secure your bike without being too bulky to bring along on a ride. You may need to practice the best way to use the U-lock and cable to secure both wheels and your frame. There are videos online with some great ideas if you need help with that. After a full season of use, I did have a part break on the mount. So, I contacted customer service and they offered to send me a replacement straightaway. So, it's good to know on a purchase like this that the company is standing behind their product. Overall, this is a great lock for me and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another ViaVelo. ... show more

    • My Locked Bike is a "Security Issue" and Building Maintenance Needed an Angle Grinder to Break

I would like to tell you all a story about a bike, my bike, and what I was told is a "security issue" by local police. Off the bat, I'm not bad mouthing anyone. It was a building supervisor or manager that called building maintenance and the police if you care to know. I'm just simply explaining what happened and what was done to the locks on my bike...and to kill some time for you. I decided to lock my bike in a new location at work. Why? Because it's about 2 blocks closer than the giant place to park bikes. An area/spot I have seen 1 or 2 bikes locked up in the past. In a busy area, but little to no foot traffic along this pathway. I lock it up with my combo chain and this exact U Lock with cable and head into work. A few hours into my shift, I get a call in my office. It's from co-workers that work near where I parked my bike, and know it's mine, telling me that police and building maintenance are starting to break the locks off. I head all the way back to my bike (About an 8 minute walk) and there are police and maintenance standing there, holding bolt cutters and an angle grinder, and the chain and cable snapped off, laying on the ground. The U Lock, however, is still on the bike. Maintenance had to get an angle grinder to cut off the U Lock. They did get 85% through until I arrived but it wasn't easy. They tell me my bike is a "security issue" and needs to be moved. Sure. No problem. I moved the bike somewhere more safe. Wanted to share this with anyone considering this lock and you can make your own judgement. The "U" is completely metal/steel. The mount is easy to install and holds the lock good.
