  • Durable Bee House Offers Easy Setup for Attracting Pollinators
Pattern Name: Brown
- Durable recycled plastic construction - Pre-installed hanging slot for easy setup - Detachable wood nesting frames for simple cleaning - Ideal 6" depth and 5/16" holes attract mason bees The Kingsyard recycled plastic mason bee house offers an easy way to potentially attract pollinators to gardens and orchards with its pre-installed hanging slot and bee-friendly sizing. Upfront… I am submitting this (first) review **before** the bees move in (early Michigan spring) while fully anticipating updating once the season is over. Even acknowledging, it may take a second year before I know for sure if the bees are calling the Kingsyard Mason Bee House ‘home.’ Second, there is no written description or anything I can find online that describes what the top-hinged door space is for. I’m going with it for placing live, pupa-stage/cacoons where the transformed bee will emerge in the spring. (This is my plan, and I’m sticking to it ;-) I previously purchased a book about Mason Bees on Amazon, and one point seems most appropriate: the location from which bees emerge tends to be considered their home. So we’ll see. It is possible to obtain cacoons from local farmers or online. Several vendors seem to offer ethically sourced opportunities online that will ship at the appropriate time for your location. Spring is it! I see a multi-year story taking place. I hope this ‘jump starts’ the process. The six-pound sturdy construction feels like it will hold up well outdoors. Mounting slots are pre-drilled for fast setup. I'll likely mount it on landscape timber near my wildflower garden. The wooden nesting slots eliminate the need for paper tubes. The wood should also make it easier to clean and harvest cocoons compared to tubes. I'm scouting the perfect placement with morning sun but afternoon shade, avoiding heavy winds and rain. Angled slightly downward, south or southeast facing, 3-5 feet up. The pre-installed hanging slot and bee-friendly 5/16" hole sizing show a thoughtful design. I look forward to seeing if the bees take up residence in their new home. It seems a charming addition to welcome these helpful pollinators to the garden. Get the children involved! I will be back at some point with an update to this review, whatever the outcome. ... show more

  • Awesome Sturdy Bee House, Excited to Get Started
Pattern Name: Brown
I didn't realize there is so much to learn to attract and take care of mason bees, including preventing damage from predators and disease, as well as cleaning and storing the cocoons from season to season, but I'm very excited to try keeping them. Unfortunately, I realized we don't have many mason bees around where I live in northeast Ohio already (we have a lot of carpenter bees) and, although you can order them - which I will probably need to do, it's too late to order now for this season as we've already warmed considerably. I needed to have the cocoons out there by February or March. So I'm going to continue learning until I can order some cocoons at the end of the summer and prep for next year. This bee house is really built impressively. It is super sturdy with sliding drawers having drilled large channels for the bees to build the mud nests, which also make it easy to remove the debris, clean, and salvage cocoons, plus an attic area above with a door and latch that I believe is where you put the cleaned cocoons that have been stored from the previous year when it nears the time for them to emerge, such as in February where we live. You're supposed to ideally secure it to a tree, wall, or post 6-7 feet off the ground, where it's slightly sheltered, facing south or southeast for warmth early in the day and facing away from prevailing storm winds. Just a wonderful high-quality bee home with a beautiful rustic natural vibe and pre-drilled holes for quick and easy mounting. Can't wait until it's full of super-pollinating bees for our garden! ... show more

  • Very classy bee house
Pattern Name: Blue
This is a heavy well made house! It’s excellent quality, and I absolutely expect it will last many years. It’s designed so that the internal wooden pieces can be removed, cleaned and replaced, so this should be extremely durable and usable for many years. The exterior house material is the same as the recycled plastic decking products which last virtually forever. This does make the bee house heavy, so it needs to be mounted on a very solid supporting fence post or tree. It’s really nice to know it’s made from recycled products. I can hardly wait to get this out in my yard so it can begin attracting bees. I have had a few Mason bee houses in the past few years, and they do seem to work well to attract these bees. It’s kind of neat to see how the little insects stuff the grass into the holes for their nests. Mason bees do not bother humans, but they work hard to help pollinate the gardens. I am glad to support their efforts at keeping things growing in my yard. This bee house is attractive and very classy. If there are any issues after a few months of use I will update this review. This would make a great gift. It's very well packaged with excellent instructions. I’m very impressed with this product and excited to begin using it. ... show more

  • Bee-autiful!
Pattern Name: Green
This is such a great bee house! I was surprised by the weight, and solid design of this house. I can already tell that it’s going to last. Compartments are all removable for cleaning. The roof overhang will protect bees from winter rain seeping in. As an avid gardener, I’m very excited to be adding this to my yard to help increase my pollinator count. The exterior walls of the house are made of recycled plastic and should hold up very well in the elements. The look of this house is very nice. Couldn’t be more pleased with my order. ... show more

  • Decent bee house.
Pattern Name: Brown
Not sure what happened to my first review of this item (this happens occasionally). Anyway, this is a decent quality bee-house that has a plastic exterior with wooden blocks for where the bees build their nests. I read somewhere that said plastic is a bad choice of material for a bee house due to the growth of mold and fungi. However, I have not experienced this (at least not yet) and don't expect to, because only the shell is plastic. The tunnels where the bees nest is made of wood. ... show more
