  • Potent natural hair color
I had been in and out of salons, got a bad balayage that I didn't like, and felt like the hairstylists weren't listening to what I wanted for my hair. My hair was bleached extensively on the ends. My hair is quite fine and very curly (in the attached pictures it was braided beforehand, but normally I have 3B spiral curls.) I tried various color depositing conditioners to try to tone the blonde as I can't afford to keep going to salons every 4 weeks to stay looking fresh. No color product seemed to hold in my hair because it had been bleached and it was time consuming to keep reapplying color masks. Not only that, but they tended to be very drying for my hair (which tends to be on the dry side anyways.) I started researching henna. I was a bit averted to it because my mother is a cosmetologist. She always shied away from henna and other natural products and because I have been growing my hair for five years, I was very nervous about something so permanent. But I decided it was time for a change, and took the plunge with Khadi's Copper hair color. I'm leaving a detailed review because I had a lot of trouble finding in-depth reviews prior to using their products. My natural hair color is a level 8 ash blonde as you can see in the first image near my roots. I was really unhappy with how the blonde didn't seem to really blend with my natural color like a balayage is supposed to. After researching henna I decided to try Khadi's copper hair color, noting that it actually had other herbs in it besides henna to balance the tone out, including indigo which scared me a bit because my hair was so blonde on the ends. (The indigo was never a problem.) I also ordered the Khadi Sunrise color and did a test strand, but that alone didn't seem to change my hair color at all, probably because my hair was already golden blonde. I did two test strands, one with Khadi Copper and one with half Copper and half Sunrise. The copper strand came out absolutely beautiful, it was a shockingly natural color and my hair felt so healthy after with no breakage. The one where I used half and half made my hair more dry and the color came out more like a bright orangey blonde, so I decided to do my whole head with the Copper and hoped that it would blend my roots and blonde ends together for a more natural look, and to help heal my hair after the bleaching. On the day of coloring I made sure I had several hours to do the application process. I covered the floor with a tarp and had gloves, saran wrap, the shower cap that was provided in the box, and my husband's help. I boiled distilled water and let it cool until it reached 176° F as directed. Then i mixed it with the packet of copper until it looked like creamy yogurt. I set it in a bowl of hot water to keep it warm. It took me about an hour to coat my entire head and it took two boxes as well, so note that if you have thick or long hair you will need two boxes. We took small sections and really worked the product into my roots and made sure every strand was coated evenly. After that I piled my head on my hair which was surprisingly easy because it felt like mud, wrapped it up and left it for two hours as directed by the company. I kept a heated rice sock wrapped up on my head with a towel to keep the product warm. It was a bit itchy on my scalp and pulled on it (like mud that was starting to cake) but other than that it was a comfortable process and I didn't mind the smell much at all. When it was time to rinse I simply ran water through my hair for about 15 minutes until it ran clear, then I applied some conditioner because my hair will break if it gets too dry (I noticed the instructions said not to use either shampoo or conditioner immediately after) and some more color ran out when I rinsed the conditioner. I braided my hair and went to work, and didn't take it down until the next day when I took the picture outside. In the sunlight it is very vibrant and has golden/copper highlights. When not in direct light it is much more dark and has a deep copper color. I have to say I am very very impressed with this product and I hope they never change their formula because I'm not sure I could replicate the exact amounts they use of different herbs. The only bad thing I will say is the gloves they provided in the box ripped almost immediately, but that's not a huge deal, I got some stronger gloves before I did my whole head application. My scalp has been itchy, but I also haven't shampooed yet and I used some of the khadi harmony scalp oil which seemed to help a lot. I did an allergy test before applying the color and it didn't cause any irritation, and it didn't even really stain my skin (I got it all over my arms in the process.) Since my hair was colored yesterday I am letting it oxidize for two days then I will shampoo. I expect it to lighten when I shampoo (because the test strands did) and because my underlying hair is so light I may do a second application on the ends at a later time but we will see. It definitely holds the Khadi color a lot more than any color mask I tried. My hair feels thicker, stronger, healthier, and I've been told I look more alive, rested, and healthy. 5 stars from me for the Khadi Copper hair color! I hope this helps others make an informed decision. I highly recommend this product! The attached images show my blonde hair before Khadi copper, and three images in different lighting of my hair after the application. Update after transitioning back to my natural color (3/9/24) I'm including two more images of the copper henna after a second application. I wanted to show how the henna made my ringlet curls very defined and tight as shown in the last picture. The ends of my hair were bleached and had lost a lot of the curl pattern, but the henna covered it very well and brought life back to my curls. The second to last picture is of the second henna application in the sunlight. I wanted a deeper and richer color, so a second application worked for that purpose. I will say that this color will NEVER come out of your hair. I wanted to go back to my natural color which is a neutral/ashy level 8 and that simply did not happen. I tried everything from vitamin C and dandruff shampoo, to color oops (3-4 times) and bleaching. This is the most permanent hair color that exists. I found that after summer was over and I no longer had a tan the color didn't compliment my cool/pink skin tone. My roots also appeared VERY cool-toned when they would start showing through, and upkeep became extensive. Every time I tried color oops the henna would disappear for about two weeks, but then reoxidize no matter how much I rinsed my hair. Hot water in the shower always deepened the copper tones, but even using only cold water this stubborn color would eventually return. Color oops will shrink the dye molecules, giving the impression that the henna is gone. But because this product bonds with the hair cuticle, the molecules are still there and eventually return to their normal size. Bleaching the hair will only remove the color underneath the henna, leaving a reflective orange sheen in the light. If I could go back in time, I would have just let my hair grow out and dealt with the color. My hair went from being extremely healthy, even the previously bleached ends, to being fried and blonde with stubborn orange tones. The product adhered to my natural, unbleached, healthy hair much more than the blonde ends. It was quite a journey that I deeply regret. I think that if someone is looking for this color permanently, then it's a great choice and made my hair healthy, soft, thick, and defined my curls. But for someone who changes their hair often or likes that ability, please think about how long you'll be stuck with this color. Bleaching and other treatments will not get rid of the orange tones. After nearly two years, I am platinum blonde currently and all henna has grown out and been cut off. I am waiting on a shipment to try the Khadi dark blonde and light blonde to transition back to my natural hair color, and will post a separate review on these colors when I am able. I am hopeful that the blonde colors will avoid orange tones while still reviving my curls and the health of my hair. If someone is absolutely desperate to get rid of this color, this is what was most successful for me: Find a stylist willing to work with henna. Assure them that Khadi does not use metallic salts in their henna, and bleach will not melt off your hair. Have them do test strands to see what color you can lift to. My greatest success was with paper thin sections in foils using Schwartzkoff Blondme in 20 volume. The foils WILL get quite hot while the bleach reacts with the henna, but it didn't melt my hair. Once your hair is lifted, you can follow with a darker color that will conceal the fact that henna is still on your hair, but expect an orange reflection in the sunlight. I wouldn't recommend bleaching henna over previously bleached hair. I had to cut my hair quite short after trying to remove henna. Update: Senna and Sunrise Blonde I'm attaching a new picture of Senna and Sunrise Blonde on platinum hair. I did three strand tests. The strand on the left is platinum hair with Senna/cassia. There wasn't a huge noticable change, but there are a few more golden tones than before. The middle strand is one 60min application of Sunrise Blonde on platinum hair (kept around 140°). The strand on the right is two applications of Sunrise Blonde, same time and temperature. I just ordered another box of Sunrise Blonde and the box was opened and badly crushed, and the products were scattered in the packaging. Never had that happen with Khadi before though. ... show more

  • Difficult instructions average user.
Very difficult instructions for the average user. This is not your normal hair dye and should be explained as such before purchasing! Or perhaps the company should change the product to be more user friendly. Could not mix the dye as instructed and result was a mud like substance that I was unable to use. Waste of my money and wish I could get my money back. ... show more

  • Messy but worth it. Changing from 4 stars to 5 stars - love this product.
Color: BLUE BLACK Size: 3.5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I have dark brown hair with grays and prefer dying black for an even color. I use box kits at home regularly, but wanted to try something healthier for my hair. Because I dye my own hair I have the tools. I have clips/combs/mixing bowls, and even one of those salon bibs that buttons at the neck. I will say the there is a learning curve with using this dye. It is VERY messy to work with. The powder is in a tight bag so be sure to work with a large mixing bowl (that you can still place into another bowl) and cover a large area of your countertop in case any powder gets loose. If any powder gets wet it will stain whatever it’s on instantly. I followed the instructions and mixed the powder to a creamy paste with a whisk. I used filtered hot water from my tea kettle. I also suspended the paste in a bowl of hot water to keep it from cooling. I tried to start with a brush for application, but found it much easier to use my hands. I had sectioned off my hair prior so it was easy to work one section at a time. Also be sure to protect your skin. I covered my neck, hairline, and ears with vaseline prior. This powder will stain everything you love and care about. It is A LOT of paste so after I covered each section I went in and messaged all the remaining product all over. The smell is earthy and you don’t get used to it. Work slowly because I moved too fast and little chunks were all over my floor behind me. After using all of the product, I removed my gloves and placed the cap provided on my head and wrapped it in a towel. I let it sit for 60 minutes while I attempted to clean up. The clean up was frustrating because it felt like it got everywhere. I definitely stained my countertop and bathtub just in rinsing everything off. I’ve never had such a problematic clean up, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars. The good news is the rinse out was fairly quick (although it also contributed to more staining in my tub). I was very worried about the kit not having any hydrating or conditioning product with it, but after rinsing, I worked in some of my olaplex products as normal and brushed. I had one little tangle that quickly brushed out. My hair felt light, and very clean. And currently the coverage is amazing. I don’t see any of the grays I had previously. I will come update as the color develops and I’m also hoping because it’s a natural product that eventually the stains everywhere will fade away. Aside from the mess, which I think I can avoid next time. I’m a happy customer. UPDATE: the color lasted about 4 weeks, but I wash frequently because of workouts. The stains on my countertops also faded over time. I have tried this product a second time and will keep the rating at 4 stars as I really do wish the kit included a conditioner or treatment for after the rinse. UPDATE PT 2 - I've now ordered and dyed my hair with this product at least 4 times if not more. My hair is so healthy and I get compliments on how shiny it is. The process is messy, and after the first rinse my hair feels tangled and impossible to work with, BUT in my latest dye, I let my hair dry as a tangled mess overnight and then worked with it patiently and slowly. I think the negative reviews are fair, but this product can do wonders if you have the patience for it and practice. ... show more

  • The color is good but not enough quantity for the price
The instruction are clear, the color is great, but I would love to have more quantity for this price, it wasn't sufficient for thin long hair (above chest)

  • So easy to use
I have been using this product for a couple of years. It is very easy to use and does a decent job of covering the grey if you use a good shampoo that is for color treated hair. I will say that my natural hair color is a medium brown with greys, and I always get the dark blond shade and my hair always turns out very dark brown almost black. Not sure why it gets so dark, but it’s hard to just keep it on my roots and not the rest of the hair because my hair is very short and fine. ... show more

  • Natural but not fully effective
I really like that this dye is all natural. I read and followed the instructions very carefully. It was definitely a messy and long process. You really have to read the instructions and watch their online video carefully because you need more items than are included in the box. I do think its healthier for your hair but it did not effectively cover all my grays. I would have to try it again to see if it gets better over time. Pros: Very natural ingredients, no chemical smells, no stains on skin like other dyes, gentle on hair Cons: Messy to use until you get some practice with it, Does not effectively cover all grays, pricey considering you will still have to buy the temperature gauge and hair oil separately. ... show more
