  • Great head unit.
This item is good, and should make most consumers happy. It has 3 RCA out-puts, so you can add external amps and subwoofers etc. By itself, through quality speakers, it produces loud, clear sound. It drives a powerful, full and punchy bass, super sharp highs and rich mids. Make no mistake though, you cannot simply replace a tight, tuned subwoofer with this and good 6x9s-- and you should have 3-way speakers (or 4- or 5- way) with good crossovers to avoid pushing your woofers to distort. The units ability to set colors for buttons and display is flexible and nice, and a good way to waste time playing around with it. Its really nice to have the ability to preprogram the brightness of the face at night, separate from the day brightness. The auto-dimming feature, which is automatic when you flick on running lights / headlights, worked perfect the first try (the splicing into the "orange" headlight detect wire was trivial). The main volume knob is extremely easy to accidentally press inward, (and so accidentally mute all sound) when you are trying to simply turn it. I have dexterous fingers and nonetheless have muted many times by accident - so I imagine this will be an issue with most users. The removable face works excellently, and comes with a simple case. In fact, I purchased this unit over a Clarion unit, simply because of the removable face plate, and it is satisfying. Another small gripe. The "Audio" feature which opens "fader", "balance" and so-forth is hidden well within the menu system, and I don't see a way to skip the laborious process of holding "menu" for 5 seconds, then scrolling through options to get to the "audio" menu, and then clicking down until you get to "fader" or "balance". Remember the old days when "fader" and "balance" were immediately accessible? Not so much anymore. Strangely, the EQ features are easily drawn up by holding the EQ button, which provides the separatebass,. mid and treble settings. Unfortunately for me, I do not use EQ, but buy good speakers instead. If you like to regularly adjust the actual level of the EQ bands, then this feature will be a godsend for you. It is extremely easy to hook up Bluetooth with my Samsung Galaxy phone. The unit has excellent phonebook support, the head unit all dialed calls, received calls, missed calls and so-on. It allows easy, intuitive browsing of the contact list at the faceplate. Two small gripes: making an actual handsfree-bluetooth call using this unit itself is not so great., The other end of the call complains about the voice quality. I turned up the mic to max, and routed the steering column and tried positioning it various ways toward my face. No one could hear me clearly. Since the mic plugs into a standard 3.5 mic jack, I will buy a replacement mic and cord and see if this improves the voice quality. Switching the headunit to AUX, and using my phone's built-in mic makes a crystal clear call (but then I cannot use the headunit to control calls). Even if my phone is several feet from my face, and to the side, the tiny little mic in the Samsung Galaxy is many times superior to the JVC mic, mounted right in front of my face. As others have noted, there is no clock if you power the unit off... but you can just power the unit on and not play music, so that's not a big problem. ... show more

  • Solidly built, great value - plays everything (so far)
This is a solidly built unit. It feels well made. It has lots of tricks! First - the installation The installation took me about 1.5 hours total which included the removal of the previous am/fm/cd player. I installed this unit into a Ford E-150 van. One problem - I didn't think ahead to make sure that I got a vehicle specific wiring harness or a wiring harness adaper , but in retrospect it would not have done me that much good. My van already had the original unit replaced so I was adapting to an adapter that was already there. All the wires were color coded and it was a simple matter of snipping and stripping wires and then splicing them back together with electrical tape and small wire nuts. Once this was finished the unit played perfectly. I have a Samsung Galaxy note and I synced the phone with the blue tooth adapter supplied with the unit and it worked like a charm. The unit does have 2 USB ports, but one is on the front of the unit and one is at the rear of the unit. I had installed the Pandora app on my phone and when I started the app on my phone I was easlily able to have Pandora sync with the JVC unit - sweet! I then then removed the SD card from my Galaxy note, inserted it into a Transcend SD to USB adapter and plugged it into the front of the unit - the card was quickly read and played flawlessly. Curious about what the unit might also do , I attached an old Arcos 402 hard disk based music player/ camera/ camcorder to the unit - it located my music and commenced playing. I then attached a standard USB hard drive. After a search it located the music files (the drive was 500 GB) and played them with a few bumps her (some of the songs produced a file error. The hard drive files found resided on a FAT32 partition - I have no idea if the unit will read NT file system. Needless to say , but - nearly any should modern MP3 player play through this unit. I haven't had a chance to use my phone with the unit, but whenever I do I will update this review. As far as features and value I would rate the unit an easy 9 out of 10. The installation was fairly simple. I am very pleased with the units and consider it to be a great value. My van will no longer be home to hundreds of CD's! I will likely listen to most of my music via the SD-USB adapter and use my Galaxy note when I want to listen to Pandora (unless I want to cache Pandora to the SD card) I would recommend this unit to anyone looking to update their equipment. Added 15 August 2012 Months after the original purchase I am still very pleased with the unit and it's performance. ... show more

  • So far So Good
I installed this stereo in my car yesterday. So far it works great. The install was very challenging, but this was not the fault of the stereo (the install kit that I bought separately was poor quality). I would suggest that DIY install is for the more ambitious. It am pretty handy and I struggled with it for an afternoon. It would certainly not be a beginner project. Audio quality sounds fine. I'm playing through the stock speakers in my truck and have no issues with how things sound. The bluetooth function works great - its a big upgrade from my old unreliable setup. It paired with my phone easily enough and then reconnects within a few seconds after I get back in the car. I've done a couple of test calls to my wife and she reports that she could hear me fine. One surprising item is that the bluetooth function is provided by a dongle that plugs into the rear USB socket. I was hoping to route the rear socket into a shelf on the dashboard so that I could plug memory sticks in more easily. Because the rear USB is used for the dongle, this plan didn't work out. The unit does feel a little plasticly and flimsy. The buttons are a little more fussy than I would like. I do like that there is a clearly audible beep through the speakers as you push buttons and turn knobs, this makes it easier to use when driving. The instruction manual is reasonably clear. It could be a little better, but its quite acceptable. You probably want to keep the manual in your car at first. A lot of the button sequences and such are not intuitive. Bottom line is that this seems to be a good unit for the money. Next time I might shell out the $75 for pro install. ... show more
