  • It is easy for a beginner to use.
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
My grandson wanted to learn how to sew. It has been the best sewing machine to teach him on so far.

  • fantastic beginner or casual machine
This is a fantastic sewing machine. While the Brother and Singer machines you find at your local big-box stores have many more features for the same price, they are not nearly as good at the most important feature: sewing. Overall, Janome machines are much more reliable, quieter, and lower maintenance than your typical discount machines. I just started sewing, and after my entry-level Singer machine started skipping stitches after 4 uses (over the course of 5 years spent mostly sitting on a shelf in my closet), I donated it and bought this machine. It has 12 stitches-- 6 basic, and 6 stretch-- and a four-step buttonholer. The stitch width is fully adjustable, and the height is adjustable for the basic zig-zag stitch. The description doesn't mention this, but the machine comes with 4 presser feet: basic zig-zag foot, zipper foot, blind hem foot, and sliding buttonhole. The feet are all plastic, but seem well-made and sturdy, and are easy to snap on and off. I've only used the default zig-zag foot, which is clear so you can see the edge of your fabric even when sewing very narrow seams. I've mostly used the basic stitches, but since getting this machine have been sewing up a storm. This is great for a beginner because I realized my previous attempts at sewing failed largely because of my frustration over my finicky Singer machine. I read the manual thoroughly (very good reference by the way, which includes explanations of how to use each stitch and recommended tension settings), and haven't not had any issues with this machine aside from user error (had skipped stitches when sewing lycra, but this was remedied by changing to stretch needles). Now that I have a sewing machine that works reliably, I get to actually make things instead of fussing with the machine. Also, there are enough stitches that I don't see myself outgrowing this machine anytime soon-- I will mostly be using it for projects around the house (curtains, cushions, slipcovers) and easy projects. Also, this refurb looked just like a new one, with all the included accessories. It was a great deal (I paid about $100 shipped) since this machine normally retails for around $200. ... show more

  • Very nice machine. Sturdy
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
Bought & gave it to my adult daughter in Nov 2014. Very nice machine. Sturdy, easy to use, yet has everything most people would ever need. Has drop in bobbin which I like best (is easiest to use), and sews great. Gave her brief sewing lessons on it & very happy except we were both frustrated by the way it threads through the "take up" (small hook inside the machines long vertical slit next to the brand name). There is no door that opens allowing you to easily loop the thread around the hook (like my old Kenmore), but may be the standard now. The book shows to twist the thread as you put it through the slit, which apparently is a learned skill for the patient. I finally figured out you can press the thread against the side of the machine (inside the slit) with a Sewing Gauge (see photo) & that worked great. It does not have a needle threader & I was concerned since her sight isn't the best even with glasses however, she had no problems with threading the needle. ... show more

  • Great valve, works like my larger machine.
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I really like this machine. I can take it with me, weighs less then my larger machine. Easy to use. Great value.

  • Not the quality of a Janome i expected
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
We got this machine for our granddaughter in law and i was VERY disappointed in the quality of this machine. It definitely did not live up to Janome that i expected. It sounds very loose and grinding, not the smooth sound i expected. I would not recommend this machine. I realize that it is an inexpensive machine. I think i could have done better with a Brother from a local Joann store. ... show more

  • Tough but tender...
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
Rock-solid machine. Powers through everything I've thrown at it (denim, cotton duck, recycled vinyl signage), but can handle delicate fabrics as well. Stitch quality is excellent and consistent. It's a little loud, and the plastic snap-in method for changing the feet worried me a little, but I swapped out the plastic shank for the metal one from my old New Home MyExcel machine and it worked like a charm. Very happy so far, but if anything changes I'll be sure to update this review. ... show more

  • Great value for the price!
I have not found any problems with the machine, so far. I bought it specifically because I needed an inexpensive machine to sew some yarn onto faux leather for a craft - not exactly an everyday use. The material did not feed well, but I didn't expect it to. The thickness, with the yarn, was over 1/4". I have also used it for 'normal' sewing - repairing a seam in jersey fabric, and it worked great. A fine machine for the price! ... show more

  • Very hard to thread!
Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I could never get it to make a stitch for me as the mini Singer did that I had. I wanted a full size sewing machine. I heard Janome is one of the best. So far, I have had nothing but trouble. I'm getting a Brother.
