  • great helmet
At first I thought the helmet was DOA, because I couldn't get it to turn dark while holding it up to the sun. After calling Kimberly Clark, they told me that it's wave-length specific, so it won't go dark with the sun, but it will with a welding arc (also does go dark with a regular light bulb, so that's how you should test it, with a light bulb). Which is pretty neat if you ask me. No more having the helmet go dark when a bright glint of the sun hits the metal when welding outside. I've used it for a few hours tonight, MIG, TIG and flux core. It works great. I don't know how, but I really do seem to see quite a bit more than with my old helmet, both in light and in dark mode (old helmet is a run-of-the-mill cheap auto-darken helmet). I find myself flipping up the helmet alot less, and while in dark mode I can clearly see the joint ahead of my weld, as well as the puddle itself at the same time. And the head band is very comfortable, works flawlessly (easy to nod the helmet to come down) and it adjust easily. I could wear this all day. The one thing that I don't like about the helmet, is that there isn't a TEST button, or even an on button. You just have to trust that it's going to go dark when it needs to, even after sitting for a long time. I've gotten so used to hitting the test button on my old helmet, just to make sure that it's actually working after sitting for a few days. I like the peace of mind of a test button, or at least an on switch. But, if this thing is reliable as it's supposed to be, then I guess there's nothing to worry about. So far, no problems. In short, it's comfortable, very easy to see ( both in light, and dark mode), it works very well and is adjusted very easily. As a weekend garage warrior, it is a bit more $ than I wanted to spend on a helmet, but as nice of a helmet as it is and as well as it seems to work, I think I can probably live with the cost. ... show more

  • 6 years in
Iv had this hood for 6 years welding 10 hours a day 4 days a week. This hood is the bomb I would recommend it in a heart beat. No batteries, all solar and it works wonderfully. Zero complaints. Price is high but I live in a world that you pay for quality. I had a Lincoln and it couldn't had my workload. This hood is awesome and worth the money. I did buy is 6 years ago so hopefully they manufacturer the hood to the same quality. ... show more

  • Arc flash
Size: Universal
Lens seems faulty as the auto darkening feature seems to not work instead arc flashes are common in comparison to other hemets. I do not recommend this welding shield.

  • 2nd times a charm?
Bought this hood with the highest of hopes. Couldn't wait to finally have a high quality auto darkening welding hood! Opened it up and set it all up to my liking. Love the head gear, no doubt there. But as soon as I struck an arc I knew I had a lemon. Sensitivity at max it would flicker while welding the first few passes then nothing at all. Figured maybe it was not charged up from being in the box so long, so I left it sit out for a week before trying it again. Nothing! Wouldn't do a thing! So it's on it's way back to Amazon for a replacement. Very disappointed! $385 for what! I opted for a replacement hoping it was just that one that was junk. It has so many good reviews I didn't think I could go wrong. Anyway I'll post back when the new one comes. Update.. Returned bad hood for a replacement. Transaction went very smoothly through Amazon. They sent the replacement right out. The new one works flawlessly. The adjustment knobs feel completely different, much firmer for some reason. Very clear view while welding, ability to see farther ahead of the weld is very nice. Overall a nice welding helmet. ... show more

  • Fabricator? Get this hood.
I weld boats for the navy as a Aluminum fitter/welder. I've had the BH3 before but cracked the lens when I worked in a rough ship yard and dropped it from 15 feet up while strapped to my 30lb tool bag. Dont strap this to your anything when packing it around. Hold it in your hand. This hood is so good I bought it again. The wide view port makes fabrication easy. Super clear while welding not; so much so I could die grind, grind quickly before burning wire again. No silly replacement batteries. I leave it in my tool chest sometimes weeks at a time with no noticeable battery drain. Just three knobs: delay, shade and sensitivity. The head gear is very comfortable with a durable tightening knob that feels great. I wear my 3M 6502 Half-Face Respirator on for close quarters welding while using this hood with no problems. No fogging issues at all. I've used this while doing TIG, GMAW, FCAW and SAW Only issue I have with this hood is that the replacement lenses for the front are custom with tabs (it's not a square)- You cant snag your coworkers' Miller square lenses and use them. Gotta order them- I replace them after approx 150hrs of work. Airgas can order them but I recommend getting a pack of 20 here on Amazon. For the inside lens I just cut down the square Miller lenses to use in them. ... show more

  • Amazon had the best price online and I got it in 2 days
I am 71 years old and have a project truck I'm working on. I had difficulty seeing the arc when I am MIG welding, so I thouht it was time for a new helmet. The reviews for the Jackson W70 BH3 looked impressive so I bit the bullet and bought it. Amazon had the best price online and I got it in 2 days, they also gave me a price adjustment when the price was lowered 2 days later. I can say Amazon treated me great and I never had any problems with them. I tried the helmet that day and was not impressed. It didn't work any better than my 20 year Jackson EQC, in fact the EQC looked better. The W70BH3 helmet does fit better and is more adjustable and you don't have to fool around with batteries and worry about being flashed, To make a long story short after I tried cheater lens, replacing the front safety lens, drug store reading glasses, shining a spot light on the weld area, puting a towel over the back of the hehmet to block back light and even turned the lights off in the garage to no avail. I thoughjt my glasses were OK, but they were 3 years and I didn't have any problems reading or seeing at all I thought. After I put on my good glasses, the ones I didn't want to wear in the garage for fear of damage I could finally I see where I was welding. That little bit of difference made all the difference in the world. I wonder about reviews sometime. ... show more
