  • Absolutely phenomenal guitar for the price!
Style: String
Just wow! What an absolutely phenomenal guitar for the price. I actually wasn't planning on buying a guitar when I purchased this. I found it on sale for $167. I was looking for a hollow-body guitar but was just window shopping. I was planning on spending A LOT MORE MONEY. When I saw the reviews for this and the price, I decided to take a chance. Man, I am not disappointed. I'm going to start off like so many other reviews and say, it needs a little set up work out of the box. It played OK out of the box, especially for the price, but it needed some tweaking. If this is your first guitar, do yourself a favor and get it set up properly! If you know how to do your own setup work, don't hesitate, this guitar is awesome. If you don't do your own setup work you can always learn on Youtube. Otherwise, spend an extra $50 to $75 and get it set up at your local guitar store. Once this thing is set up properly you won't believe how nice this thing plays. The first thing I adjusted was the truss rod. The neck was loose, and I've read several reviews stating the same. Once I got the neck adjusted it was like a completely different guitar. Once the neck was straightened out, I replaced the factory strings with some Fender 250s. The factory strings are OK and sound great. The Fender strings changed the sound up a bit and gave me a little better action too. I haven't made many bridge adjustments yet, but I'm also planning on doing some bridge tweaking and lowering the action a bit. The action is a little high for my tastes out of the box. I didn't make many adjustments because I was playing slide/bottleneck guitar with it when I first got it. Now that I have it in standard tuning and playing more fingerpicking and traditional playing, I'm going to lower the action a bit. I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Once you make a couple of adjustments to this guitar, you'd never know you paid under $200 for the thing. It just plays great. It just has the look, feel, and sound of a much more expensive guitar. None of the parts really feel cheap. Pickups have decent sound. I'm just playing through a $40 sawtooth practice amp. The tuning pegs rotate smoothly. THE GUITAR STAYS IN TUNE. I love the ivy neck inlays. I can't believe how beautiful the guitar looks. My friends can't believe I bought it for $167. It plays and sounds like a guitar which would be much more expensive. I'd honestly be shocked if you could find a better guitar in this price range. Now I can take the money I saved on this and buy a nice resonator guitar. If IYV made resonators, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. The fit and finish is OK. The paint looks great but there probably will be blemishes. I found a run by the sound hole, but nothing major or super noticeable. I'll take a couple imperfections in the paint considering how well this thing plays and sounds. I really love this guitar for the price. I don't think you can find anything better in the under $300 range. ... show more

  • Awesome Guitar.
Style: String
This is my 4th IYV guitar and I LOVE them. This last one is a notch down in in cosmetic quality from the first three, but playability and tone are exceptional. Especially for the price. I like the PRS body style but never had played a PRS guitar that I even remotely liked. I love these guitars. This last one is a backup to the first one. All I play now. For the record I been been playing professionally since 1967. Please note: these are NOT beginner instruments. First off the strings and bridge have to go. The setup took me almost 3 hours because there were lots of little fixes. If you can't do the work yourself , avoid. Once setup this guitar plays and sounds like a dream. The nut may have to go, and you might need to dress or polish up a few frets, no big deal. The important stuff is rock solid. These are actual wood finishes as each guitar I own is quite different. My first IYV, a Gibson ES-135 copy blows any Gibson out of the water. The first PRS copy is a notch below but very nice. This guitar is a few notches below but for the price you can't complain. The action is one of the best of any guitar I have ever owned, feel is awesome. This is the first guitar I ever bought sight unseen and no regrets. The other 3 I bought from bin store resellers. I actually paid more than Amazon prices, but I could easily sell this one for $250 to $300 after working on it. So this is an amazing Deal. Good seller, fast ship. Cardboard box is pretty crappy but it arrived without a scratch. ... show more

  • Decent workmanship; great value
Style: String
Guitar arrived on schedule and was not damaged in shipping. First impression was that it was very light and finished in an attractive brown sunburst. Acoustically it is quite loud and pleasing for such a small body guitar. I plugged it into a Vox modeling amp without any changes other than tuning it up. The strings felt stiffer than what I normally use, so I tuned it down to E-flat. Clean, it sounds great for jazz and pop, especially using the neck pickup. Through the overdrive channel it sounds great for blues and Southern Rock. As delivered, the neck was just about straight, with only slight relief, and the action was low and easy to play. The setup was just about right for me, except the bass strings were a bit lower than I prefer. The intonation was pretty close, except a little sharp on the wound strings. The wraparound style bridge is similar to that offered by Wilkinson, a simple unit with an adjustable section under the B and G strings. The factory strings are okay for now, but the fingerboard is dry and the frets are a little bit rough. For now I’m playing it just like the way it arrived, but when I change the strings I will polish the frets and oil the fingerboard. I’ve found the best way to polish rough frets is to mask off the fingerboard and use original Colgate toothpaste and a soft cloth and lots of elbow grease to really make them shine. Now for the electronics. The pickups sound great to my ears. I have a pair of Seymour Duncan’59 Humbuckers that cost more than this whole guitar and they don’t sound half as good as the ones in this guitar. I’ve had those Duncans in two different guitars and I just hate them. The IYV factory pickups have a clean low end, lots of midrange, and a fat, wooly high end that I really love. There is a problem with the wiring, however, and that’s the reason I’m not giving this guitar five stars. The volume control is defective or it’s hooked up wrong, so when both pickups are engaged, the volume knob only turns down the bridge pickup. A look inside with a dentist’s mirror didn’t reveal the problem, but it does look like in order to fix the problem I will have to pull the wiring harness out through the treble side f-hole. Initially I wanted to replace the dime-sized pots with full size Alphas, but the larger pots won’t fit through the f-hole. So for the time being I’m going to leave it alone, and I’m not too disappointed about it, because when the toggle switch is in the middle position I can get a great range of in-between tones by turning down the volume. Since the volume of the neck pickup stays the same, while only the bridge pickup volume goes down, there’s a wide range of different sounds I can get from the guitar. (And it’s giving me a good excuse for finally getting a volume pedal!). The guitar tuners work just fine, the nut is slotted and shaped nicely, and aside from the wiring I really can’t find anything really wrong with this guitar. There are the usual minor finish flaws to be expected in a budget priced guitar, but I think I got way more value than my $183 purchase price. I would definitely recommend this guitar for a beginner, someone who likes to tinker and upgrade lower priced guitars, or someone who is looking for a guitar that sounds good for jazz, blues or classic rock. I would definitely consider buying other guitars from IYV, and if it weren’t for the glitch in the wiring, I would rate this guitar a solid five stars. ... show more
