  • My new best friend!
Size: 10QT Style: Vortex Plus
Okay I'll say right off, maybe I should get more friends! But as a man who is a self-styled amateur chef, I have been pining for one of these types of cookers for a couple of years now. I always find a way to squeeze in one more item on the countertop. I choose this model based on reviews, features and brand name. I use my Instant Pot pressure cooker on a semi-regular basis and it is also a great cooking appliance, so I trust the brand name, and it doesn't disappoint. I first took the air fryer into the garage and ran it through a couple of cycles before using it in the kitchen. There was clearly some smell as noted elsewhere, likely from manufacturing. By the time I used it "for real" on the 3rd run, barely any smell. And by the next time...no discernable smell at all. My complaints are small, but let me get those out of the way. I wished it preheated up to temp faster. It's advertised in such a way that you think in 60 seconds, you're cooking. In my experience, it's 5+ minutes to get it to 400. Faster than an oven for sure, but not quite the blink of an eye I was hoping for. Second - the beeper is not loud enough. It beeps to tell you it's now at cooking temp, to rotate food or when food is done. For some reason, it seems louder to tell you food is done than it does to tell you the preheating is finished and to add food. You've got to be very close, so you can hear (or see) when it's up to proper temp. Since most foods are specifically timed, if you don't get your food in shortly after it heats up, it will start counting down whether there is food in it or not. Neither of these takes away from the overall 5 stars. I've had it for about 4 weeks and have tried a variety of items. I used the roast feature for skinless salmon. Amazing taste and quick. I found that 10 minutes was perfect for my fish. Others might find mine slightly overcooked, so experiment. It took about 3 tries for my fresh sweet potato fries to come out perfectly. I finally got it right at 20 minutes at 400 in the basket using the air fry function. Evenly cooked and delish. I did homemade coconut shrimp. I can't remember the exact time - it seems like 12 minutes at 380 but I'm going by memory. There are recipes out there to cross-check my memory. Again - used the air fry function. Baked potatoes were the best I've ever made at home. If you like potato skin, check this out. I rubbed them in olive oil, then lightly sprinkled sea salt, black pepper, and a blend of spices that is mostly garlic powder on the outside. These were large potatoes but I guessed and I guessed right - 400 degrees on bake setting for 50 minutes. Perfectly done inside and a nice crispy and tasty skin. You'll have to take a stab at it based on potato size. HUGE potatoes could be up to 60 minutes. Small taters - might be as low as 25 or 30 minutes. Other items I've done are quick prep items. Some frozen and breaded shrimp were perfectly done at 8 minutes at 400. Frozen tater tots same temp at 8-10 minutes. I sprayed a light coating of olive oil and salt on the tator tots. Crispy and delish. Everything so far has been easy and delicious. I have not used all functions - only bake, air fry, and broil so far. If you're on the fence and you like to cook, take the leap! 3/5/23 update: still really enjoying my air fryer. I find that it makes fish taste amazing. The dinner shown in the photo is flounder and sides. The flounder was cooked about 7 minutes using the broil function. Rubbed a bit of avocado oil, then used some fresh thyme and lemon pepper seasoning and a touch of garlic spice blend. Squeezed some lemon over the top, and broiled perfectly. I still use it, still enjoy it and continue to recommend it! ... show more

  • Love it
Size: 10QT Style: Vortex Plus
We use this thing a few times a week. I've made all kinds of stuff in it. It makes good chicken breasts and wings. It's small and heats up faster than an oven does, so for a single person , it can heat up food pretty quickly for lunch. There's not much to it, cleanup is pretty simple and fairly easy. The door could come off easier for cleaning, but it's ok. Overall this thing works great, we've had it for a year now and use it all the time. ... show more

  • I Was A Skeptic. No Longer.
Size: 10QT Style: Vortex Plus
This air fryer craze has become monolithic. It's genuinely, actually, verifiably insane how fast these appliances seem to have proliferated across basically every single kitchen in the U.S. and beyond. For some time, I viewed myself as a 'true' culinarian. Far above the common air fryer existing in my perfectly structured kitchen. "It's just a miniature oven!" I would tell people, incredulous as to why they would relinquish a Benjamin from their pockets to our Amazonian overlords. "Everything you can do in an air fryer, you can just do in your normal oven." I told them. I told myself this as well. My nativity makes me feel sick now. I am in agreeable with my former self, and the snobs that refuse to accept the air fryers culinary dominance for convenience. It IS just a tiny oven that lives on your countertop. A tiny convection oven. That is in fact, the exact point. It's meant to be small. Small means less volume of air to heat up in order to preheat and cook your food. Small means less electricity used for the same portion of food. Small means fast. Sure, you can't make a whole thanksgiving dinner in this thing, but in today's day and age we all don't socialize but three times a year, so heating up your whole oven 6 nights out of the week just for some Dino nuggets is becoming more and more wasteful now that I think about it. I also agree that the term 'air fryer' is silly. I'm going to call my pot of boiling water a 'water fryer', and my fridge an anti-air-fryer. The definition of 'frying' is to cook something in hot fat or oil. While your air fryer may not cook something 'in oil' your food typically contains enough oil on its surface to impart some of that crispiness on its own, sans the big tank of oil needed for 'deep frying'. I'll let it slide, cause otherwise I don't think I'd know what to call it either, cause "Miniature Countertop Convection Oven" sounds bad. In regards to this particular air fryer. It's the best. The convenience in day to day life is literally unmatched. My normal oven takes about 15 minutes to preheat. This air fryer can cook my food from frozen until done in that amount of time. Pizzas come out crispy. Dino Nuggets with a 'not-completely-unlike-fried' flavor to them. Salmon can be baked so hot and so quickly that the center still remains a nice soft pink instead of being blasted pale all the way through like my normal oven would. On the internet you'll find all sorts of dumb esoteric recipes to try to justify to the non-believer like my former self that buying one of these will 'totally get you to make an air fryer cheesecake', but the reality of it is, you don't need any of that fluff. I, like many red blooded Americans am not ashamed to say I eat leftovers. This reheats 90% of leftovers without any hassle, in about 3x of the microwave, but with 200% better results. If leftover pizza takes 1 minute in the microwave, I can have a slice done in about 3 minutes with this air fryer, and it yields significantly crispier crust. As for the little do-dads that come with this air fryer, you might as well toss them. The little basket is kinda funny to toss a bunch of Dino nuggets into to watch duke it out for 5 minutes as they rock-em-sock-em dinosaurs inside of the countertop oven, but other than that there isn't much use to it. The full size chicken rotisserie is the same, seeing how a rotisserie chicken from any grocery store is like $6 and reheats better on the flat trays that are provided than the spit attachment. All in all, this air fryer is a tank. Soaking up damage from my leftover ribs, burgers, broccolini, popcorn chicken, and whatever other nonsense I toss at it for the better part of 3 years now. It's durable, it looks pretty clean with the 90 degree angles, and I'd say it's well worth the money. ... show more

  • Best Kitchen Tool
Size: 10QT Style: Vortex Pro
We have loved this thing for the past 2.5 years. We use it at least 2 times a day, it is great for everything from toast to roasted vegetables and more. Sadly it died suddenly after 2.5 years. Pros: it can do so much, easy to set timer, easy to clean tray. Cons: the door hinge is off set, beep is loud, screen wears out and is off set. ... show more
