This nostepinne is made from a nice hardwood, and sanded to a very smooth texture. Nothing snags. My granddaughter spins with a drop spindle and wanted to make center-pull balls from the thread she spins. This is simple and just perfect for her. She loves it!

This is a lovely, smooth and silky, traditional way of winding yarn. Nostepinne translates roughly as Nest Stick, because apparently the Scandinavians who invented this way of winding yarn, think of wound yarn as a nest rather than a cake or a ball. I've wanted one of these for years, and have been using a cardboard roll from bath tissue as a makeshift nostepinne. Then I found this one. It's beautiful and a joy to use. It's the perfect, low risk, low cost, nostepinne to introduce you to them. The finish is gorgeous, the wood is beautiful. Does it take longer to wind yarn using this instead of a mechanical ball winder? Of course it does! In fact, that's part of the plan. The Scandinavian attitude is that the practice of winding yarn is meditative and enjoyable, just exactly like the process of knitting or crocheting. Winding yarn gives you the opportunity to examine the whole skein of yarn, looking for defects, knots, etc. And, you can enjoy the yarn's beauty and feel, and think about what you'll make with it. The Inanosa wooden nostepinne is a wonderful, traditional tool to wind yarn into a center pull ball. I ordered this in the Antique Finish and it has a lovely grain and stain to it. I did take off a star because there is a small rough spot on it where the yarn goes and may cause some snagging if I’m not careful. I have another nostepinne that cost double this one and find that this one is just as nice except for the flaw mentioned. This would make a great addition to someone that is using a drop spindle and/or wants to learn how to make a center pull ball of yarn in a traditional way. There are plenty of instructions and videos on the web to show you how. My Amazon rating system- Five stars-Great item. May have a minor flaw that does not detract from appearance or function. Four stars-Great item. Flaw or problem more noticeable. Or, price may be high for what it is. Three stars-Good item. Has a flaw/problem that requires more work than should be invested in a product. Two stars-May be a good item with work. Or, doesn’t work for me but may for someone else. One star-Nope. Doesn’t work for me and probably won’t for anyone else. ... show more
