Description

Built with the VHF/UHF weak signal operator in mind, the IC-9700 is an RF direct sampling receiver for 2m and 70cm. The IF receiver consists of a single, down conversion for 23cm that is between 311 – 371MHz. This design provides a quiet receiver due to Icom’s DSP technology. The robust PA provides 100W on 2m, 75W on 70cm, and 10W on 23cm. Band Management In addition to band specific memory channels, the IC-9700 allows band specific receiver and transmitter settings. For transmit, users can make adjustments to RF power, TX power Limit, Limit Power, and TX Delay by band. Basic receiver settings, like the Noise Blanker, Noise Reduction, and others can be tweaked by band with a dynamic Notch and Filter setup by band/mode. • A great transceiver with some artificial limitations
This is a fantastic transceiver - provided you want it strictly for ham radio uses. It has a fairly intuitive interface (although there is a bit of a learning curve), a great and responsive display with a fast spectrum scope, it features top-notch rx circuitry, a built-in SWR meter, and quite a bit more. There's really nothing about it that feels cheap or half-assed: it is about the best 2m / 60cm / 23cm base station you can buy. The most painful drawback I can think of is that the receive capabilities are limited strictly to 2m, 60cm, and 23cm amateur transmit bands. You need to buy another expensive unit, such as IC-R8600, if you want to have the same features while tuning in anything outside a very small slice of the spectrum. This seems like an artificial and anti-consumer limitation, probably added deliberately to prevent cannibalizing the sales of IC-R8600. It is worth noting that IC-7300, ICOM's HF receiver, doesn't have a similar limitation, and lets you tune in to anything from 30 kHz to 74.8 MHz, even though it only transmits on a subset of that. Another limitation is the lack of support for DMR / Fusion; I know that ICOM is invested in D-Star, and D-Star is a very cool technology - but this is not a budget handheld, where the outcome of the system war is going to be decided; at least having a paid upgrade to decode DMR traffic would be a welcome feature. Basically, if you have any interest in digital radio, you kind of need to place a bet on one technology or the other - or pay twice. ... show more

  • Excellent State-of-the-Art Transceiver
I have used this rig for 2 meters and 440 MHz and was very happy with it once I mastered the controls, which seemed very complicated at first.

  • Fantastic SDR!
As I was reading the one negative review, I was absolutely blown away by the fact that one purchaser sent his back because it did not have a power supply... Seriously, if they knew anything of the line up of radios, he wouldn't have sent back such a fantastic radio, when power supplies are cheap enough and would have been needed for about any radio he purchased. Anyway.... What a beautiful radio, and it's not hard too see why these don't stick around long. You can't even find them on QRZ or Ebay. If one does show up it's gone in a matter of hours. I wish Gigaparts wouldn't sell their radios here, they mark up the price when you can buy them direct for much cheaper, and usually other vendors have it cheaper then they do. Two thumbs up.. you won't be disapointed! ... show more

  • Top Notch All Mode 2M, 70cm, 33cm
I will only address one complaint made concerning the IC 9700, that is the ham portion only in TX and RX. Wide band receivers can not have the sensitivity or selectivity of a radio made specifically for the amateur bands. This is a serious radio made for serious hams interested in weak signal work, Satellite ops, and digital communications. If you want a "Shack in a box" that covers HF and 2m and 70cm, get one..I assure you, it will not come close to the performance of this rig. ... show more

Is a great radio...Icom made sure the receive wont extend...I had a kenwood ts 790 and with a mod the radio would hear a lot more...
