    • Saved me a lot of money in the end...
I have had glasses since i was 10 years old (42 today), so i understand the need to accurately measure the PD. I have been using brick/mortar stores for decades and never had a problem until the pandemic hit. For some reason, the number of frame options that would be fit my very high script dropped drastically. in fact, one sat afternoon, i visited 9 individual optical stores (chains and individual) and could only find large/plastic style frames, when previously, i could easily find multiple metal rectangular frames. i gave up and started looking online. I used wirecutter to find a good store and proceeded to figure out how to measure my PD. The website says to use a ruler, which seems wildly inaccurate, so i tried several different iphone apps, all which gave me slightly different PDs. I finally ordered this device, realizing that someone must sell what they use at store. Lucky me as i was able to take the measurement and it stayed consistent over the course of a week (yes, i took 7 measurements). i ordered the glasses online and so far, they fit great and my eyes are doing great (i.e. minimal adjustment time and no eye strain). while the price of the glasses wasn't an issue (i have gotten to use to the high price over the years), ordering online for the same frame as i could get in stores saved me hundreds (literally), so spending the money on this should be help me save more in the long run. ... show more

Purchased this for my optical. Have been using for a while. Not flashy but works and provides the info that I need. Much less expensive than the usual "name brand" manufacturers.

    • Disappointed. Maybe a fluke.
The device is well made and sturdy. However to get an accurate measurement there needs to be a focal point for measurement. The instructions state that to remind the “testee to stare at the green target” but no green target is visible. Batteries are installed measurement tools appear to be functional but this device is worthless if you’re unable to measure from the focal point. Returned and will try another device. ... show more

    • I’m a licensed optician in NY State, this is the puller that you need.
I purchased this to be able to take proper measurements for family and friends to be able to order glasses online from reputable sites. I would recommend this machine. It’s a good price and comparable to other name brands I have used while working in an optical. Take it from a licensed optician, this is the device you need. This shines a light on the retina to get a proper measurement. Do yourself a favor and invest in this and please don’t use the mirror and credit card and ruler tricks that some sites tell you is ok to take the measurement. This will be far more accurate even when done by a non-licensed person. ... show more

    • Doesn't Give Consistent Results for Monocular Measurements
I had my PD measured by two different opticians using Essilor X81705 pupilometers and they both had the exact same measurements for both monocular and binocular tests (31.5 mm left, 33.5 mm right, 65 mm total). While binocular (combined monocular) readings with this pupilometer were always within 1 mm of the Essilors, we could not get duplicate monocular readings out of 10 attempts. The averages of the 10 pairs of monocular readings were about 1 mm left of those of the Essilors. For single vision lenses, this may be acceptable to most people but not me. My optometrist showed me that a 1mm shift reduced my corrected 20/15 vision to somewhere between 20/20 and 20/25. Once you've experienced 20/15 vision, 20/25 won't do. It appears that the reason for this discrepancy is because the nose piece for this pupilometer is much smaller and much narrower than the Essilor's. It is almost impossible for me to get it to rest in exactly the same position and orientation on my nose from one measurement to the next. I suppose it may work for children and for people with narrow noses, but it didn't work for me. ... show more

    • A must-have tool for buying eyeglasses online
I buy glasses online and suspected that the pupillary distance I was providing was the reason for the glasses to be off. Given that the optometrist who updated my prescription refused to measure my PD distance unless I bought glasses at his store, I tried to measure it myself, using several methods, including rulers, credit cards, cellphone apps, and eyeglasses measuring frames, but none seemed trustworthy. I got this Pupilometer and immediately realized how bad the other methods are. With this tool, you obtain reproducible measurements. You also get the PD distance for each eye. In addition, you get the PD for distance vision or reading vision or a distance in between (selectable with a dial). With the PD measurements taken with this tool, which differed from the measurements taken with other methods, my new pair of distance, intermediate, and reading glasses were spot on. ... show more

    • Defective.
I'm a career optician and I've used dozens of pupillometers in my career. I purchased this one for my travel optical bag. The left eye adjustment bar stuttered from the beginning, consistently giving me inaccurate results. At first I thought I might be doing something wrong, but I had no issues using my coworker's. The seller claims there is a one year manufacturer warranty but I could not find any way to reach them and return it. Finally I reached out to Amazon customer service. They accepted a late return directly to them, but charged me a restocking fee. ... show more

    • Measurement are not very accurate, precise or reproducible.
1. Difficult to visualize measuring needle against reflecting point on pupil. 2. Cannot visualize L and R needles without observer changing viewpoint, which affects measurements. 3. Shutter does not block out light very well (blocked eye should not have anything to focus on). 4. The above problems result in high measurement-to-measurement variability. 5. The distance mono PD measurement is consistently 2.5-3.0mm narrower than the PD recently measured by my opthamologist, whose measurements agreed with our multiple measurements using a PD ruler. ... show more
