Let me just say that I've purchased and received as gifts from friends a few train sets for my young son in the past, and this train set, by far, is the easiest to put together. From the perspective of someone who assembles these trains that my son loves to watch, I'm all about what is the fastest way to get the train out of the box and operating. The instructions for this train set are simple and not complicated. From the time I opened the box, it took me about 15 minutes, if that, to have the train going around the elliptical track. It was great! What took the longest was figuring out how to remove the battery compartment, so I could place the four AA batteries (does not come with the set) inside. I unscrewed the compartment, but removing the battery compartment was a challenge. I had to use the screwdriver to pry the lid off, even after having unscrewed the compartment. But, once I got the batteries in, everything after that was smooth sailing. The train sounds are great, and it's easy to link the various carriages together. The trains move on the track pretty easily. So, maximum fun for my young son as soon as possible -- two winning advantages in my book! ... show more

This is a really nice train set, especially at the price point (I purchased for $40 USD). We were surprised. We have bought different sets over the years that were much less quality at the same price. We got the one without a remote control. The steam feature is really neat! It comes with some extra wheels and coupling replacement parts so that is nice. The on/off switch is well placed and the quality of the train engine and cars feels good. It’s also a good size, larger than I expected! The noise is really fun but a hair louder than I prefer, though not bad. The track is pretty much unusable if you don’t use the included lock pieces so be sure to do that (the movement of the train itself can shift the tracks just enough to come apart if you don’t use the locks). It’s cute and moves at a good speed, and the options to make the track in different shapes is great. You can get a little bit better quality train at a higher price point but I don’t know that the price difference (about twice as much) would necessarily be worth it in this case because this train is actually a decent quality! Depends on your usage and needs (for instance, Christmas decor and kids playing vs. serious train collector). Overall I recommend! ... show more

I am giving it only a single star for two reasons. The most annoying thing is the "on/off" setup. To start the train's movement, you must push the small button on the top of the locomotive cab. It works flawlessly. The train poses for a couple of seconds and starts its journey in a realistic manner. But unfortunately, you can't stop the train without ruining the true-to-life effect of the game. You will unavoidably derail the locomotive if you try to push the same button while the train moves. The button is placed away from the center of gravity, and by pushing it down, you are kicking the vehicle out of balance. The only way of doing it is to grab the moving toy with one hand and, while pinning it down (rotating wheels still screeching), push the button to the "off" position. So, there is no tranquil, realistic "train is arriving at the station" game authenticity. But what about using it strictly as an "around the Christmas Tree" decoration? While running, the train makes a choo-choo plus whistling noise. It sounds charming for the first minute, but it is pretty loud. It would be nice if the train could keep running without irritating sounds, but regrettably, there is no way to switch the sound off. It is a nice-looking but poorly thought-out gimcrack. ... show more
