We have been using it often in the cold garage, sitting 4-5 feet away from the heater. It radiates heat in one direction. The outside metal enclosure barely even gets warm, so it should be pretty safe as long as nothing is right in front of it and nothing is blocking the air intake. When the air intake was partially blocked once, it heated it's safety switch enough to shut off and refuse to heat until it was allowed to cool and reset. We usually keep the thermostat knob way up and manually moderate the temperature by switching between hi, low, and off. There is a jarring difference when the thermostat does click it off, so it's nicer to keep it on low continuously while you're right in front of it. Just turn it off when you walk away. It isn't that effective at warming the room while you're away, at least in comparison to the instantaneous warmth you get as soon as you switch it on while sitting in front of it. ... show more

These little heaters put out a lot of heat, immediately, as soon as you turn it on! The only tool you need is a medium size screwdriver, either flat head or phillips, to attach the two legs. The legs are marked "FRONT" and you slide them into the bottom of the heater. Then attach the screws, two on each leg. Then just plug the heater in, turn the thermostat knob fully to the right, clockwise, and turn the heater on. You'll get a smell the first few minutes, which is normal, because it's new. After that, no more smells. Once the room is comfortable slowly rotate the thermostat knob back to the left, counterclockwise, until the heater shuts off. It will then turn on and off to maintain the temperature, within a few degrees. You may have to adjust it a few times to get it dialed in. My bedroom is 14 X 14 X 9 and this little heater keeps it nice and warm so I don't have to heat my whole house during the overnight hours. Make sure to keep the cold air intake, on the right side of the heater, clean. It can get clogged with dust or pet hair. If you notice the heater isn't working as well or if it shuts off and the red light comes on, check that air intake. I also wouldn't recommend using a power strip or definitely not an extension cord with the heater. Plug it directly into your wall outlet. If you notice the plug is hot, uncomfortable to the touch, plug it in elsewhere. A warm plug is normal, especially on the 1,500 watt setting. A hot plug is not and it's dangerous. A hot plug is telling you that the outlet is not powerful enough for the heater. This heater is quiet too. You can hear the fan, but it's not annoying. At least not to me. ... show more

    • Don't buy - Very warm heater.

Over all I like this heater it is actually quite large as far as 1,500 watt heaters go, the two switches and the knob work like you would expect them two, and it was easy to put together. The only reason that I am giving this one star is that the two plastic feet for it were just thrown into the bottom of the box with the heater put on top of them with no provisions for keeping them safe and one was broken in half when I took it out of the box, I glued it back together and then screwed it on and so far it seems to be ok. This also came packed in Styrofoam if that is an issue for you. EDIT 1: Don't buy this product - I have been running this heater for two months now and typically only run it for 30-60 minutes in the morning while I get the fireplace going, a few weeks ago I started to notice the fan has a warble in it and for the past few days the alarm light comes on and it shuts off after only being on for a few minutes, and I have it on a flat concrete floor with nothing around it or over it. I am an electronic technician and will be taking this thing apart to see what is wrong with it and will come back here and do another edit. ... show more

I had read reviews before purchasing this that claimed this was not quiet or was noisy - I'm afraid I have to disagree completely. There is a fan noise that can't be avoided if you want any heat to reach you, but the fan is what I would consider quiet when compared to other heaters or fans I've used. A low-speaking voice will be easily heard above this fan, and I could probably sleep with this in the room. The heat output feels pretty great to me. I'd compare it with opening the door to your stove/oven even on low and although it wasn't blowing heat rapidly, it was able to heat up my cold basement office within about 30 minutes. The only reason I gave this 4 of 5 is that it looks like someone buffed the top with scotch-brite or something, maybe to remove an original manufacturer's label? Given the reports of this thing not having much longevity the last thing I wanted to see were scuff marks on a "new" machine. It doesn't speak to the quality and raises questions about whether this was a return or factory defected. I shouldn't have to have this worry, so 4 stars is correct as otherwise I think it's great. ... show more

Gas bills of $400, $600, $800, oh yes and even $1000 getting you upset? If you heat your home with gas, you already know this. Well, this space heater can comfortably heat a 12 x 12 room in short order. It has been in the mid 30s at night where I live. I can't afford to pay the gas company's highway robbery rates to heat my entire home! This heater was my solution. The heater is very simple to operate. There are no hi tech circuit boards to burn out. The controls are as simple as a kitchen countertop toaster. You have a main power switch with a power on light, a wattage switch for 1250 watts for normal heating and a 1500 watt position for fast heating of the space. A large thermostat knob to automatically control when the heater comes on. For safety, there is a tip over cutoff sensor. I tested it by flipping the unit on it's face, it shuts everything down immediately! There is also a quiet fan inside that helps to force heated air out of the unit. The power cord is more than long enough and is of high quality to handle the electrical load. I highly recommend this unit! The price is right and it's attractively constructed. Don't forget to use the 4 screws to attach the legs. I saw a previous review stating that the legs just snap on. They do, but that is not safe. Put the screws in to ensure that the legs will not un-snap! Tell the gas company to pound sand! ... show more
