  • Rugged for lots of years use
This winder came assembled which I appreciated, as sometimes it is shipped with some assembly required. There is a trouble shooting guide for likely problems. It was not written in standard English or at least by a native speaker. I emailed them for more help and got 2 videos sent to me, which were not helpful. I will try to interpret for you: 1. If you are winding a thick yarn and the silver thread guide hits the ball you are making, grasp the thread guide at the base and tip and just bend it outward so it doesn't touch. 2. It will be noisy. Just put a drop of oil, your choice, on each of the 5 gears. I used WD40 and it helped a lot. 3. If the crank has a difficult spot or "dead spot", you have to find wrench or pliers to carefully loosen and retighten any of the 5 nuts holding the 5 gears in place, until it feels right. Mine came with a sticking point when the handle was in the highest point. I have not braved this yet and it still works, but is just more smooth at that spot. It takes more strength. And it does take strength to crank the 5 gears. it is not at all like a plastic ball winder from other sources. 4. If it cranks so tight and puts pressure on the incoming yarn that the yarn breaks, adjust the screws again. I did not buy a wooden jumbo winder for this reason, they always wind the yarn too tightly and stretch it or break my fine singles. I have not gotten this adjusted, so i am not going to use lace singles on it. And this was the yarn I wanted to use it for. Sigh.... But I'm not done trying out fixes. Not all the gears are metal. It looks that way in the pics, but only the one next to the crank is metal and the others are a hard plastic. It is heavy. Like lifting an old fashion dictionary. But i do expect to get a lifetime of use from it. ... show more

  • My Favorite
Went back to hand crank after spending big bucks on electric winder that just didn’t do a good job. This one gives me little or no tangles and I really like the way it winds the yarn. Would buy again.

  • Made my life so much easier
I had no idea if I would like this gadget. I didn’t expect much but man was I shocked! It was so fast and easy to make nice yarn balls. I was sick of the knotted mess at the end of a skein.

  • People I think we have a winner!
This is the FOURTH style of winder that I’ve tried so far this month! Also the first one I’ve actually liked! Im afraid to say too much because I might jinx it! The gears bay the handle make all the difference. Not once did it slip or jump gears. Not once did it slip the yarn off of the “cake” making me backtrack and rewind a section. My one disappointment is the gears in front are nylon-not metal. Probably to make it quieter but honestly it makes very little noise as it is. Fingers crossed that it holds up! Im thinking I may get a small wooden stool to attach it to to make it more stable. I also used a silicone mat under it to keep it from slipping. Highly recommend that! The thread guide also has a small rubber washer on it to keep it from traveling left and right while you’re winding. That’s a nice little thing that none of the others thought of. The only ones I haven’t tried so they aren’t included in this is the wooden ones. Very beautiful and I may try one of those one day but the budget doesn’t currently allow. But as for this winder I give two thumbs up. Would DEFINITELY recommend! If you buy and it doesn’t work I’d have to say that it got damaged somehow and try to get a replacement. Mine was fine and worked absolutely great right away! As long as it continues the way it started we have an absolute winner! ... show more

  • Large heavy winder
I have a smaller Stanwood winder and felt it was cheaply made but I could have a fake. Anyways this large wind seems pretty sturdy and I hope it lasts a long time. I've done a few skeins and it has done a great job. If you go too fast the ball can't handle it 😂.

  • Gears are very tight
This winder works very well. As others have noted, it is loud, but I live alone so I don't care. It isn't deafening but does kind of sound like a meat grinder. It seems quite sturdy and was easy to set up. It is tiring to use though because the gears are very tight. They may loosen up in time. I did put a couple of drops of sewing machine oil on them to see if it would help them turn easier but I didn't really notice a difference. Someone else commented that they played with the screws on the gears and got them to turn smoother, but I'm hesitant to try that. It works and makes a nice center pull cake. Go a little slow if the yarn is delicate otherwise you may over stretch it. ... show more

  • It’s fast. Easy setup. Great quality. Lots of metal parts.
You have to have a lot of really loose no tension yarn available for this thing. It spins up fast. Puts yarn into a nice little cake just like it’s supposed to and then you’ve got a lot less messing around when you’re working with it. Also, if you’re doing the project and you just need a little bit of one color, you can wind that into its own little ball, and travel with it rather than the entire ball of yarn. ... show more

  • I didn't know I needed this
I choose this one due to it having the double gear system and being metal, not plastic. I made sure that I watched the video so I understood were best to position the yarn being fed in. The instructions do warn about the wheels getting to tight & not turning. I had this right away, I had to loosen the gear for it to turn. Instead of always tightening/loosening, i just use silicon spray (like wd40 but no dust build up). I did have a hard time finding where I wanted to mount it. While the down clamp is wide, you need at least a couple of inches on the bottom of whatever you are clamping it to. This leaves out most counters, tables etc. I did use a stand that I have but need to make sure that I balance it with my leg when I get spinning as I get going pretty fast. I put the yarn in a large bowl and feed through starting slow to make sure that my end holds down. I then have the yarn run through my hand between the bowl and the feeder that way the yarn is "up in the air" for better feeding. Center pulls just stay put, but the unwinding skeins flop around like a fish when winding - hence the big bowl to keep the yarn in. If I do stop winding in the middle for any reason, I do have to adjust the lay of the yarn and start a little slow again before getting up to full speed - gravity and all that. I am done in no time with a skein. ... show more
