  • Used to be great. Now it's horrible.
I bought a spool of Hatchbox white PLA back in 2017 and it was great. One of my favorite brands. After using up that spool, I went to buy another and noticed it had dropped from $30 to $20 which was great. But it seems there was a reason. I assume they switched manufacturers or suppliers, but the new spool, which I just opened, is terrible. Diameter fluctuates by around 0.06mm pretty regularly and it gives under extrusion issues constantly, causing noticeable banding throughout the print and poor layer adhesion. It's also my h more brittle than the older stuff. The original Hatchbox had some flex. This new stuff just snaps. I thought my printer was having issues so I printed test objects all day, replaced my PTFE tube, replaced my nozzle, cleaned out the hotend. Nothing fixed it. I finally decided to try a spool of known good PLA and it printed smooth again. Switched back to the Hatchbox and prints returned to terrible. I hate to condemn a brand from a single experience but I'm not really sure I want to buy anymore from Hatchbox now and I used to recommend them to everyone. ... show more

  • No issues whatsoever? Don’t be scared to try this
I honestly don’t know if the other reviewers got a bad batch or something, but my spool prints just fine. I was afraid to try this filament due to the reviews, but I needed the color and 3D Solutech (my main filament brand) was sold out. I’ve gone through about 600g of this stuff from structural parts to high detail models and so far no stringing, underextrusion, failure to feed, or bad filament/winding. The included picture was printed with the following settings: Printer - Creality Ender 3 Slicer - Ultimaker Cura 4.0.0 Resolution/Layer Height - .2 mm Infil Density - 100% Nozzle Temp. - 205C Bed Temp. - 65C Print Speed - 80 mm/s Ambient Temp. - 23C (73F) Total Time: 6h 47m 13s Edit (1/4 of filament spool left): Yeah, I honestly don’t see the issue here. Used up another large amount of the spool and it’s almost done, no problems. Added some more pictures that used a faster print speed setting, larger layer size, and less infill, no problems. I mean I can see if people complain that it doesn’t look like injection molded plastic, but c’mon, realistically it’s not; it’s 3D printed at extremely course settings. That shouldn’t be a negative, the prints look great. I could have probably tweaked my settings a bit more for finer layers and make my print look smoother but I didn’t bother, looks good as is. My advise is if you are still having issues, try to check your slicer settings. Do a quick test print first at an extremely course setting to see if the object comes out satisfactory. Keep tweaking it until you find the correct settings and then finally adjust layer size from there depending on how detailed you want your print. If you want a baseline to work with, I provided a small setting summary above. I will be purchasing other colors to try them out and see if the results are consistent across the rest of the color spectrum. ... show more

  • Never had problems until this.
This was my first and last experience with Hatchbox. I thought I'd spring a little more money for this stuff compared to what I usually get because everyone always raves about Hatchbox. It was a terrible experience... my printer now sits disassembled because the melt temps and layer to layer adhesion is so incredibly inconsistent on this. I tried every temperature from 180 to 210 and tried heated bed from 45 to 65. At one point I thought I had hit the magic combo and then the very next print looked terrible. And yes, my bed was level and everything else on the printer was working. I never had issues with the cheaper stuff like 3D Mars or Solutech, once I get those dialed in they stay dialed in. ... show more

  • Inaccurate diameter, dirty filament
This is the third reel of hatchbox filament I've received that was sold described as Dimensional Accuracy +/- 0.03mm, but has +-.05 printed on the reel (other reels were a different color, so this seems to be a widespread problem with hatchbox). Even that measurement is not correct though, I've so far measured as high as 1.83mm (+.08mm). There is also some loose black bits of something (dirt/grime) dusted throughout the reel which of course stands out with white filament, not to mention the potential of that gunk to clog up the hotend. The plastic itself seems to flow and stick fine, however the lack of QA and outright lies about the dimensional accuracy makes this filament a no go. There are better options for less money out there. ... show more

  • Terrible just terrible.
I’ve used a lot of Hatchbox in the past, but this white filament is just aweful. It cools very slowly so that even with a fan and the lowest recommended temp of 180*c it delivers very messy and inconsistent results. These are the same results I’ve seen in pictures of 5 star reviews on this product, but I’m guessing these are from people who have not experienced better filaments. I hear that this poor cooling is common among white PLA and that has certainly been my experience so far. I will reserve the use of this filament for large prints that don’t require good detail. If you absolutely must have white PLA this is probably no worse than the average, but almost any other color seems to work better and pla is easy to spray paint. ... show more

  • Loses a few stars due to being finicky and have underextrusion
Worked pretty good for smaller prints, and I even managed to get a good Sir Snake completed. The issue is when I stepped up to larger prints I have a lot of areas that have a ton of underextrusion due to filament size being out of spec. Unfortunately I'm past the return or refund window here on Amazon so I have over a half a spool left and the quality of prints I get with it doesn't match other Hatchbox colors ordered at the same time period. Printed at 210C with 60C bed temp. I use a Creality Ender 3 with 0.2mm layer height, 50mm/s speed ... show more
