Pros: The candle itself is absolutely luxury. You will not find this quality in a department store. The throw is exceptional. The scent is masculine. I have pets so it works. The quality of the candle is superior. I love the candle scent. Challenges: The gorgeous video marketing and Oprah Winfrey's recommendation makes the candle aesthetics (jar, labeling) seem higher quality than reality. The box packaging was nice but the candle label is coming off the candle jar. I think the company should invest in a higher quality labeling system or an etching machine at this price point. I also think the candle base (black glass jar) should be much higher quality and prettier. Better jars are at the dollar store. The jars need to be more elegant. More artistically aesthetic. The price should be around $35. I paid to support a Black Owned business and will buy all the candles in the line to support but I am paying about 20% for hype. If the jar and labeling improved definitely a $50-$75 candle. Nevertheless, I will be buying Lady next. ... show more

    • Beautiful scent
Scent: Speakeasy
First things first, I love the whole aesthetic. The quality in the packaging, the jar and scent are really superb and a whole vibe. When you spend a little extra on something like a candle, you want it to feel like a treat. It did that for me. The scent itself is good; much better when burning. At first it smelled like tootsie rolls to me since it’s heavy on the chocolate notes, but it marries well with the other ones. It gives off a warm, relaxing vibe and I like lighting it at night for this reason. The throw is great as well; I can smell it nearby on the table unlit and once I light it up it fills my space easily. The only thing I dislike is how overwicked it is, meaning the wicks burn way too hot. Even with frequent trimming very low (1/8”) the flame starts to get pretty tall and burn very hot after 30 minutes. This definitely isn’t a candle you want to accidentally leave burning for an extended time or fall asleep to or I worry it’d crack the glass. ... show more

We’re home all of the time with covid so why not break the bank on something that makes staying at home better? This Ellington candle is my second HCC arrival (Lenox, my former stomping grounds, is on the way— I have Speakeasy burning now!) and I’m obsessed. They are distinctive, room-filling candles that really do portray the essence of Harlem for this former harlemite. Ellington brings to to mind a masculine yet sweet essence...indescribable but beautiful. (Honestly it smells like my partner- an unexpected bonus.) I will say that these are expensive. They compare In smell/richness to Anthropologie candles but cost about twice as much per ounce. But if you’re not opposed to $pending on candles these are a must-try. Love Amazon for the prime shipping, even though I had to wait for them to be in stock. That’s probably for the best, lol! BOBO too! ... show more

    • Disappointing Scent

I'm a bit of a candle freak, and for the past couple of years I've been looking for the perfect rose scented candle. I love to walk into a room after a candle has been burning for an hour or two and feel like I've stepped into a rose garden, a strong, rose-forward scent and the ability fill a room with scent are musts for me. Sadly, this didn't live up to expectations. The packaging is very pretty, but the scent is underwhelming - the most distinct note is a powdery vanilla, with just a hint of floral in the background. I left it to burn for a few hours, but the scent didn't really have much of an impact, even after stepping outside for a few minutes and then coming back. Overall, not worth the price point, although maybe other scents would be more to my liking. ... show more
