This is my first Winder so I’m not 100% sure how they are suppose to feel. The piece the yarn goes on came all scratched up. I’m not worried about that tho bc the yarn still slides right off. It feels a little stiff and hard to turn sometimes. And it’s kinda loud. My kids had to ask me to stop so they could hear the tv. Also you’ll probably wanna put something between the device and whatever you’re hooking it to (table, desk, whatever) bc when I took mine off of the kitchen table there was little scratches there. And you’ll definitely want whatever you’re using to be sturdy bc like I said, it is hard to turn it sometimes. The extra bits were fine. The circle marker things feel a little cheap but manageable. Bulky. Awkward and it doesn’t wind tight enough. A lot of people love it and I get that. For me it should wind a little tighter so the balls don’t take up so much room. And cause yarn to get tangled. Especially at the end of skein

    • No Instructions, Flimsy Construction
This yarn winder doesn't come with first-time-user instructions, which would have come in handy. I had to rely on YouTube to watch a demonstration for a similar winder. I mounted the unit to my table, but not tight enough. Because as soon as I started turning the crank, my yarn got tangled in the gears, and the tightness I thought I had achieved to keep the unit secure failed. I blame the flimsy vise system. While I was able to remove the yarn and keep it intact, I no longer felt confident about using the winder. It's going to go into the garbage. The best part about this purchase is the stitch marker/cable kit. I plan on using that for many crochet and Tunisian crochet projects. ... show more

If you are looking at this yarn winder then you must of had the crappy plastic one and if you are like me you may have gotten so frustrated with it that you used it as a harmer and it met the concrete and lost. I love that the gears a metal and they don't slip the hand crank is great and doesn't hurt your hands from making your cakes. This yarn winder can do 2 10 oz skeins of yarn TOGETHER. buy it you wont be disappointed. ... show more

The idea is cool but there's nothing to hold tension on the skein and therefore, it's a super loose cake. Sending it back. I'll invest when someone creates a better model. Like I said, cool idea, but flawed. Hand cranking makes the cakes tight...

Pros This makes decent sized cakes. Will do a full regular weight skein with a little room for more. Went together easy and wasn't horrible to figure out for my first time ever using a yarn winder (didn't come with instructions). Cons The desk mount will damage the surface you're attaching it to, both from the wing nut bolt and from rubbing against the side of the surface (I'll add a tip to prevent this below). Certain parts of the gear binds slightly so it doesn't always turn smoothly. If you're going fast it doesn't bother though. Not unusable because of this. Tips To prevent damage to your desk or surface, fold a wash cloth and wrap around your desk where you're going to clamp. This will prevent and side of the surface from damage due to rubbing. Also place something under the wing nut bolt (where it pokes through the bottom) . I used a stack of post-its. Yes, a better design would prevent damage. Keep some tension on the yarn. This will make for a tighter cake and will keep the yarn from going crazy and coming off the guides. There WILL be lint. I wound 6-7 cakes the first day in one sitting and got lint ALL over my computer desk (and laptop and keyboard). I have no suggestions for this, it can't be avoided to no fault of this product. Overall I can't gripe too much about this little gadget, especially given the price. ... show more
