  • A fantastic cat tree at a great value
Color: Beige
Buying a new piece of furniture is a substantial decision, so I searched long and hard and read lots of reviews. For my price range (ideally no more than $150), this is a huge, elaborate cat tree, by far beating out anything available in pet stores or their online shops. At one time or another I had plenty of concerns, based on the reviews. I can tell you right now that all my concerns were alleviated the moment it came out of the box. This goes without saying, but this is a very tall cat tree, so make sure you have room for it. The box is heavy (70lbs), so be careful lifting it. While individual parts aren't labeled, the instructions are as clear as they need to be, and one need only lay all the posts, bolts, screws, and platforms out side by side to see what needs to go where. Construction took my father and me no more than an hour, even as we paused when the oldest of my three cats (4 years old) jumped up to explore while we were still putting it together. (My two rambunctious kittens, 8 months old, were shut in my bedroom during construction. Otherwise it would have taken twice as long!) Construction is very easy and simple, with the only minor issue being the way the ramps connect to the underside of the platforms. It's not even a real problem per se, but you might need to put the screws in at an odd angle because the brackets won't entirely align with the pre-cut holes. I'd be surprised if your cats don't love it, because I know mine do. As I said, my 4-year old cat was all over it before we even finished construction. And once the kittens were allowed to explore... Well, suffice to say that even on the very first day it was put together, my dears spent more time on and around it than not! It does not detract from the strong reasons you have to buy this for your home, but I will note that the strings by which the mice are attached to the platforms will not last more than a couple hours at most. That's not a big deal though: That's just the natural order of things when cats play. And you can easily purchase mice and better strings to replace them. Long story short: I would consider this an essential purchase. This is more elaborate and nicer-looking than other cat trees that cost twice as much, and the materials from which it is made are as solid as any competition. Construction is easy, and your cats will love it. Don't be discouraged by the caveats you see in reviews. Once you see this in action, you'll be glad you made this choice for you and your family :-) ... show more

  • A bit wobbly, but sturdy enough for 2 heavy cats
Nutshell: This structure is somewhat wobbly, but it doesn't lean or tip over, I have three pretty big cats, two of them use it every day, for hours at a time. The third one doesn't use it much, but I have seen him chase the other cats up it occasionally. I'm not sure if it's the wobbliness he doesn't like, or if he just doesn't care for it, but he prefers to sleep on the sofa or bed, whereas the other 2 cats like to be perched. It doesn't seem unsafe or anything, and I'm confident that they can play on it without hurting themselves. Although I might suggest getting a smaller structure to put next to it. Sometimes my cat tries to jump from the second highest perch, and sort of goes 'thump!' on the floor, so I think it would be nice to have a ledge or something for her to jump to, and make it a step down instead of a nose-dive. (if you look at the picture, the left side is straight up, that's where she jumps from, instead of going forward and using the boxes or the steps to get to the floor safely.) She's not always the smartest cat, but she's sweet! More detailed review: I have 3 big cats, one with severe behavioral issues (aggressive towards my live-in boyfriend, and he pees outside of the litter box). We can't afford a behavioral specialist, so I started watching 'My Cat From Hell' on Animal Planet, and one of the things they talk about is a cats need to perch. Long story short, I decided to do some homework and find a good cat-tree for my four-legged kids. The one with the behavioral issues has been quite a bit better and I think the perch has contributed a little to that (we've done other things, too, like more play time.) He definitely loves being up higher and being able to keep an eye on things, he acts like the king of the castle. And the boxes make him feel like he's hiding, I think. He gets an attitude like "You can't see me! I'm hiding in the box!" I spent a few days reading online reviews, and the biggest problem I ran into was finding something durable enough for my cats. The heaviest (let's call him T) is about 19 pounds. My second cat (N) is 17 pounds, and the youngest (J) is about 12-14 pounds. And I worried about finding something to support them all. That being said, this structure IS a bit wobbly, but doesn't appear dangerous in any way. I don't have any fears about it tipping over on top of them. All three of them can sit on it/jump around on it and it does wobble a bit, but it does fine. And I get very paranoid about this stuff, so trust me when I say I've kept an eye on it. I have noticed that no one is courageous enough to go the highest perch. J, the lightest cat, does go up to the second highest perch, but not the very top one. I even tried putting her up there myself, to see if she just needed encouragement, but she always comes back down. T doesn't go any higher than the top box, and to be honest, N doesn't use it much at all. (It's been about 3 weeks, maybe with some more time he'll like it.) Assembly was pretty easy. I admit, the instruction page was crap, it was just a single sheet with a few pictures on it. But if you've ever assembled anything, you can probably figure it out by looking at a full picture of it. The hardest part was putting the ramps/stairs on because you have to lie on the floor and screw them in above you. It could be tricky to maneuver for some people. And my cats don't even use them because they're big enough to jump the distance. My advice would be to leave them off if your cats are full grown. The scratching posts are nice, one of my cats loves them. And they've played with the hanging mice a lot, I was surprised that they lasted so long. It took a week before they finally tore one free. But I think that's to be expected. The only other thing I think should be mentioned is that it sheds quite a bit. Meaning, the blue material comes off. It was worst after assembly, and hasn't been too bad since then, but sometimes there are little clumps of blue on the floor around it. My cats don't eat them, but I worry that some cats might be tempted, so you might need to take that into account. ... show more
